Oh, my husband was constantly talking to me when I was going through contractions (during the part when I was trying to avoid the epidural). I knew he was trying to help, but it annoyed me to death.
To this day, I don't have the heart to tell him that I really wished he would've stayed quiet, but odds are my next birth will be a planned c-section, so it won't matter.
Ladies, if you are having a natural birth (and I sincerely hope you do), please remind you husband to take care of himself, too! My labor/delivery took place over several days, and dH forgot to eat, drink or sleep much at all. When he did eat, he got junk food from Mickey D's. He also got really, really dehydrated. Consequently my husband got quite sick the first full day of my son's life. He had to leave the hospital to go take care of himself.
Okay, that sounds strange - he had to leave the hospital, because he was sick - but it's true.

saw an interesting show a few weeks ago on tv....they were testing this theory with body builders and their ability to pick up more with or without using their screams to help them. Turns out that they (on average) were able to lift about 17-22% MORE weight when the only variable was that they were allowed to scream when they lifted it.

Sarah - that's neat! I know when I'm working hard, it's easier for me to do more if I can grunt (like lifting, pushing, etc.)
The OB actually said, "All your power is coming out of your mouth and we need it to come out of here." (pointing at her down below).
The book I just finished (The Birth Partner) recommends spontaneous bearing down (without the annoying counting) as it is shown to produce less tearing.
Sideways - thanks for the advice about husbands! I'll make sure mine understands that I need him to take care of himself for him to take care of me well!

I was talking to a woman at church who is a direct-entry midwife (homebirth). I told dh about her and he was interested... My, we are becoming crunchy lately...

Believe me...when your BODY is ready to bear down, no amount of you trying will stop it from happening. I feel sorry for those women that push for hours and hours because their dr's says for them to...I wait til my body is ready, and BAM...it happens. the MOST I have ever pushed was 6 times...and I refuse to push when the dr says to, I do it when my body says to. I have made many a dr mad at me because of that...but oh well...it's not their body!!!

I know, but so far I haven't had a choice about being induced. So, if I HAVE to, what's better - pitocin or water breaking?

yeah I haven't had much choice because of medical complications...so I understand you there.

You do have a choice. They just tell you that you don't. But a doctor can't make you do something you don't want to do.
They both have risks, and if you have AROM and it doesn't start labor, then you WILL get a pit drop and/or c-section.

In that same book, I read for the first time about how after the baby descends a bit there's sometimes a "resting phase" in which the uterus has to 'catch up' to how far down the baby is now in order to push it out. I had NO IDEA that happened. I'm so glad I read that book! It's a fantastic source of information!

my resting phase is much higher usually. I stop dilating at usually 5 or 6, and stay there for HOURS...in fact, most of my labor is there at that point. Then (and I tell dr's this, but so far they really haven't listened to me very well, which has led to come harried moments)....then all of a sudden baby descends down more and I go from 5-6 to 10 in a matter of just minutes, and usually within just 5-15 minutes from that last little bit I have a baby in my arms. (Usually closer to the five minute mark). I try to tell them that when my body is ready they better be...but they don't listen. Last time I was told by a nurse that I couldn't push cause the dr wasn't on the floor yet, to which I screamed back..."My husband can catch...he knows how...now SOMEONE get down there!!!!"...the dr walked in the door right then....more like sauntered in the door....uuuggghh... You would THINK that by baby #4 I would KNOW my own body!!!!

LOL, Sarah. Not fun at the moment, I'm sure, but thanks for the laugh.
The doctor was not present when I was born. He was playing golf. My mom went in and the nurse called him and told him she was gonna have this baby NOW and he said, "Of course you aren't, it's your first, it'll be hours!" and then she hung up and the nurse caught me. My mom was standing up, I believe.
She had my sister in the hospital hallway. My dad says, "If she even looks at you funny, run for the hospital!" LOL
When my friend had her baby (and I played Doula) she had me running a marathon around the OB ward. At a certain point we walked back in the room, and she said to the doc, who was not scrubbed and was sitting chatting with her DH, "I'm going to use the bathroom and then it's time to have the baby, he's on his way" and then she proceeded to do just that. When the doc caught the baby, the nurse was still pulling his gloves and gown on! Afterwards my friend said, "I guess I forgot to tell you ahead of time that when I say now, I mean NOW" LOL-this was a doc we hired after firing the "you must lay on your back" doc, while she was in labor. So they hadn't had much of a chance to chat about things.

My sister pushed for just about 2 hours. I know that's within normal, but it seemed SOOOOOO long!

I pushed for 2 hrs the first time, 20 mins the 2nd time and 15 mins the 3rd time.

You holding your breath and pushing unnaturally (to the 10 count) can actually deprive the baby of oxygen. My last two, I have not let them check me until my body was already pushing the baby down on its own, and I refuse to push until I hear '10'. Both had pushing phases of less than 20 minutes, with me only pushing when I felt like I needed to. No one else is in your body at that moment, so how can they possibly know when you should be pushing??

Not to dis your opinion, Donna, Dear, but it just plain isn't healthy! LOL
And it's one thing I really hate to see in TV/Movie birth scenes...which generally get on my nerves anyway, and my kids hate them and when they know one is coming they say, "Please, mom, can you be quiet during this one?" because I am frequently shouting at the box, lol, but anyway...

They shout in martial arts, too, and one reason is to keep you breathing. I'd rather a laboring woman was making noise than holding her breath!

--I would not be inducing labor in any manner, either pit drop or AROM or suppositories or anything. Basically, because the minute they take one intervention (and those are!) your risks of other interventions skyrocket, and with each, you get closer and closer to a c-section.
