What are the statistics for induction caused c-sections.

it's different with every hospital and every dr. The hospital I had my 4th in had a statistical rate of about 55-60% c-sec. with inductions....however, MY dr was much lower (more like 2-5%....he was a rare one there that actually didn't like doing c-sec's). That's one of the only reasons I was comfortable even doing an induction (hubby was deployed, so if we had not induced then hubby couldn't have been there for the birth, and that was very important to us that he be there)

I wouldn't say I was truly induced. After 3 hours of pitocin, and only pitocin because my doctor didn't want to use cervical gel to ripen my cervix, my Dr. said I wasn't progressing and there were heart decels and I caved. He stated there is always a reason for these things so I assumed I would put my baby in danger if I tried to hold out for a vaginal birth. I also doubted I would make much progress without the support of my Dr. I think the worst part about my c-section is that I was never in labor and wasn't given a true induction. That drives me mad..
So your baby was really in distress? They said my baby had heart decels but I thought that was normal during contractions.

I was sent in for a non-stress test because he had not been moving around. After they strapped on the monitors and force-fed me (they kept saying it must be low blood sugar, which I knew it was not) I looked at the monitor and his heartbeat was going from 250 to 0 to 250 to 0...it was really scary! There were no contractions or anything to cause that. He was born 10 minutes later.

They never figured out exactly what the problem was. However, it was my 8th trip to the hospital and I had known there were problems for months and they kept blowing me off with their 'you know nothing we are the gods!' mentality. I think if they had listened to me, things would not have been so bad, but in either case, I now have a healthy 15 yo boy.

I've read birth story after birth story and have never heard anything like that. A mother's intuition is not given nearly enough credit! I'm glad to hear he is a healthy now.

They are normal to an extent, but there is definitely a point where they are NOT normal. Both of my nieces had severe decels during contractions and both of them were born with the cord around their neck multiple times. My first niece was born vaginally with her first APGAR being a "1", her second I don't remember what her second one was but she was obviously in distress. My second niece was an emergency C and she did MUCH better, but again, the cord was around her neck multiple times.

I think the most important thing is to be armed with knowledge and to be able to trust your medical care provider, whether it's a midwife or an OB. I will only ever see an OB, but I trust him completely. We have talked about my wishes for labor and delivery and about what situations he considers to be candidates for emergency and non-emergency C-Sections. I am comfortable with his opinions and wouldn't doubt him if he told me that I needed an emergency-c. We decided that I needed to be induced, it wasn't just him telling me "this is what we are going to do". It was a joint decision based on my labs, my kidneys, my swelling, and more importantly how I felt about being induced at that point. He offered induction at 36 weeks because he was going to be out of town when I was 37 weeks, but we both felt that it was better to wait... so I did.

Yes, I felt kind of like I didn't get the whole "experience", but I did have a fantastic labor and I have a happy and healthy (almost) 1 year old now.

I'd say that's a true induction. Pitocin can cause uterine contractions that are stronger than regular contractions and cause fetal distress. Some types of decels are NOT normal during contractions - scroll down on THIS page, it explains the different types of decelerations.

with my most recent birth, the dr had a gut feeling so he stuck around even though the MW was going to deliver. He just hung around in the room, chatting with us. I think though that if it had been any other dr in this situation I would have ended up with a c-sec...however this dr had listened to me about my four previous births and knew what MY body could and couldn't handle. When Justice's heart rate dropped all of a sudden with a cont'x and I was only at 8cm, he knew I could deliver at that point (he knew I would stretch or that tearing was better then a c-sec.)....so he immediately set into motion my birthing him at only 8cm dilated. Turns out the dr's gut feeling was right...he had the cord around his neck. I was very glad for that dr and his gut feelings...and his intuition to know what my body could handle because of having had four babies already...esp with their knowledge that I don't exactly have small babies. I know for sure if that same thing had happened with baby #4's dr, I would have ended up with a c-sec.

David's APGAR was 1 at 1 minute after birth and 9 at 5 minutes after birth. I'm sure in a hospital I would have had an emergency c-section or an episiotomy and a forceps or vacuum delivery. David wasn't breathing when he was born but the midwives left the cord attached and helped him start breathing, then handed him to me. In the hospital they would have cut the cord and rushed him away without me getting to see him or know what was happening. He is a big, happy, healthy baby and I do not regret having him at home. My midwives were extremely knowledgeable about birth and knew exactly what to do.

I am not questioning you or your doc, just pointing out that for most babies in most births, the cord being around the neck is not a problem. It happens quite a lot and usually you don't even know, they just slip it over the head before the body is birthed.

Emily, that is one of the largest reasons NOT to cut the cord--because they can still get oxygen for a bit with it attached. Very cool job your MWs did.

yes I know.....this was a problem though...it was also in my first birth. In both cases it was wrapped tightly around the neck three or so times. The dr wasn't sure what his gut feeling was about...he told us that. He kept thinking it would be an issue with cord prolapse (because of the u/s pic taken that day)...so they purposely broke my water in such a way that it would be a trickle instead of a gush. Turned out that the cord didn't prolapse, but it was around his neck so when he descended to be born it tightened, heart rate dropped, etc. From that moment it was less then three minutes to when he was out, so that was a fun three minutes (they weren't set up for me to push yet, so they were running around quite a bit...lol). I am very glad I had that dr though...even in the chaos he kept it very peaceful in there. I knew because of my having had babies before that it was serious when he had me pushing at 8cm... If I had been a first time birther though I would have never guessed anything was wrong just because of how peaceful he kept the mood of the room. It was nice!!!

Nope, it's not. Gabby's was in a knot AND around her neck and while she did have slightly worse then normal decels her APGAR's were 7 and 9, so she certainly wasn't in distress.

You can push before you are complete? I thought that would mess up the cervix?

It can cause it to swell and such, but since this was Sarah's 5th birth, her cervix ought to be able to handle it--and it did. That doctor was used by God, I am sure. I wonder if he knows it.

Not when it's your 5th apparently.

yup...5th baby so it worked out fine....plus the MW was stretching it as soon as he said something about pushing at 8cm (while the nurses were trying to get the bed apart). Like I said, it was a very interesting three minutes.

Gwen's cord was also around her neck - but only once. It was, however, enough to cause some slight decels as she was crowning, and they weren't able to loop it around - they had to cut and clamp as soon as her head was born because it was so tight. I was really sad that the cord wasn't able to be left in tact until it stopped pulsing, but I understood why

I am, however, quite impressed that I had *no* interventions at all - my water broke on it's own - at 9.5 cm!

If I've had one prayer for years since Nadia's birth it's that my water wouldn't break until the end with this one. That was the start of most of my problems with Nadia's birth. It broke basically after just a few contractions. I had no 'pillow' for her head. Her head was pushing against my cervix and it did swell. Caused abnormal pain. Even the dr and nurses said my pain was abnormal. I pray, I pray, I pray, it does not break early again this time.

I'm not sure how bad the heart decels were but I know he recovered well and quickly after each contraction. I personally don't think I had a true induction because I was only given a few hours of pitocin to progress when I was going in "green". I think I needed the cervical gel or needed to wait it out. However, I went in to read my medical record the other day and it turns out they had to use a vacuum to get him out during he c-section. Maybe he wasn't coming out on his own?

Emily~ congrats on your birth :). My SIL just had a natural birth this week and I can only imagine the awesome bonding she is having with her baby, nurse and NICU free.

Vacuum during the c-section? That doesn't make sense to me. Is Smootches around these days? Maybe she could clear that up...

yup, and I have the direct quote from the record (I took notes because I couldn't afford the 185 to purchase a copy)
"might vac applied to infant head-- popped off at X1 and reapplied"

after that they detail the birthing of the head etc. I remember during the c-section there was a LOT of tugging. I almost couldn't breathe. I guess they were using the vacuum during that time. Totally bothers me but makes me wonder if he needed that much force if I could have birthed him naturally. Hopefully the next birth will be different.

Are you sure that doesn't mean that they tried a vaginal vacuum extraction prior to the c-section?
