I'm pretty sure they were notes from the actual surgery. There is no way they tried before because I wasn't dilated more than a fingertip. I remember when I read it in my record I wasn't surprised.. it explained all the tugging and pulling. I don't know why it was necessary since it was a c-section. All I can think is that a vacuum is safer than yanking on a baby's head with hands.

I'm 5'0 (small) and had weird rib pain during my pregnancy. Maybe he was stuck but I still like to believe that with the right support I could have had him vaginally. I've heard of smaller-framed women having bigger babies doing it so I still have hope..

What bothers me most is that they told you before you were induced that you would likely have a c-section.

I am 5'3 and was 125 pounds pre-pregnancy. I am also very short waisted (there is no space between my ribs and my hips.) I gave birth to a 9 pound 8 ounce baby naturally.

ohh me too! I wish I had said no to being admitted or better informed myself of my options. I had a feeling about my obgyn and should have trusted my intuition. All I can do know is hope that I'm helping someone by posting and telling my story. I have a friend about to deliver with the same obgyn and I keep recommending that she get a doula or a midwife to assist.

Hopefully in a year or so when we try for another I can have a better experience, even if it ends in a c-section. I don't know if I'm brave enough to have a home birth but I still have plenty of time to figure that out.

EmilyAnn~ wow, almost a 10 lber! How were you able to decide on a midwife? There is only one in my area but several in a city 2 hours from where I live. I'm not sure what to look for. My SIL said there was only one in her area and she had a great delivery with her.

I probably need to let this topic rest since I'm not pregnant or trying yet but it took me months to stop feeling like a victim and now I'm ready to learn everything and be as prepared as possible.

We started TTC in January of 2007 and that was when I started researching home birth and midwives. There are laws against midwives delivering babies at home here in NC so it is hard to find a midwife. I actually read the birth story someone posted here. She lives in NC too (but a few hours away) and she got the contact info for a midwife closer to me from her midwife. I interviewed 2 midwives and went with the one I felt most comfortable with. Around here it is really just a word of mouth thing.

excellent, thank you. I'll make sure and interview a few people. I didn't feel right with my obgyn from the start but everyone said he was the best so I ignored the feelings. I bet he is a very good doctor but I knew he wasn't right for me and should have listened to by intuition. Anyway, with that said I'm sure a little interviewing and soul-searching will go a long way.

There is nothing wrong with starting to look early. Like I said, I started doing a ton of research in January and got pregnant with David in September. By the time I was pregnant I already had my midwife picked out.

Midwife A had a little more experience. She lived 2 hours away. She had 5 other midwives that worked with her. You knew you would get 2 midwives at your birth but didn't know which 2. Prenatal appointments were done in her home except for 1 home visit close to your due date. She sometimes had 15-20 women due in one month.

Midwife B had a little less experience but was still very knowledgeable and had a lot of experience. She lived 45 minutes away. She had 2 other midwives she worked with but I got to meet the one who attended my birth before the day I went into labor. She came to my house for all prenatal appointments. She only had 2 women due each month. I really liked her and felt very comfortable with her.

There are a lot of things to consider when choosing a midwife. I think it would be a good idea to go ahead and start looking. [:D]

I didn't really 'interview' my midwives - because we don't pay out of pocket for midwifery care, I just made an appointment. However, a friend had recommended that I ask for a specific midwife, which I did, and I LOVED her from my very first appointment! It turns out that she actually owns the practice [8|] - and also teaches at the University in my city which has of the two midwifery schools in the province. My secondary did about 1/3 of my visits, so I knew her very well too! They work in a practice with 8-ish midwives, but you only get your two - unless one is off-call, then you get another one, but you always know one person.

Did anyone read the homebirth article in Time? I realize Time may not be everyone's favorite because of it's liberal reputation, but I thought the article was quite interesting.

Warning though, it does portray both sides, as in the doctors who oppose it, and the moms and midwives who support it. So, if it's going to upset you to read the opposition side, then you probably shouldn't look at it.

That's the best thing you can do IMO. I had to switch providers late in my pregnancy, and it ended up being such a blessing that I did. I KNOW I would have had a c-section if I had been with the other practice. The practice I ended up with employs midwives and are much more open to natural childbirth options.

After 4 days of contractions at home and 25 hours of labor in the hospital where I had to keep moving and turning b/c of heart decels, I was finally able to actually PUSH out my baby. I am so grateful that I had doctors who were willing to let me go as long as I wanted as long as the baby was okay and we could keep the decels to a minimum with movement. They even gave me an amnioinfusion to give us more time for dilation and help stop the decels. My doctor was really trying to make sure we had as close to birth we wanted rather than just doing what was easiest for her.

SO... definitely search as much as you need to to find the right provider.

ETA: BTW, I am also only 5 ft tall. Caden weighed 6lbs 12 oz. I didn't see what your's weighed, but I didn't have any trouble at all pushing him out (only 2 stitches). We just had trouble because he was stuck posterior until the last 2 hours of labor.

I had similar birth to yours lily. 4 days at home in labor that wouldn't move forward beyond 8 minutes, 60% effaced and fingtertip dilation. We went in and got Morphine that last 3 hrs, then we went to Epi and Pit and while it wasn't ideal they were awesome and started real low and let me preogress as much as I could on my own. Epi failed and I felt EVERYTHING for the last 12 hrs of labor. Finally got to 10cm and pushed her out in 20 minutes and 6 pushes. Very small tear on labia but no stitches needed.

It wasn't what we wanted for a 'natural' birth but I'm pretty certain I felt everything that I would have without the EPI since it FAILED and WOWsers that's some pain. Made stronger I'm sure by the Pit. But it got her here without a C and it was never even mentioned by my midwives, for which I am very thankful.

I did the unthinkable though and poo'd during pushing.. I even asked if that's what I had just felt and she said yep. I said great and kept going. Laughing slightly about how NOT concerned I was.

ETA she was 7# 11 oz and 21 long, and I'm 5'1

Oh, I pooped too. It. Is. Mortifying. When hubby talks about labor and says "there were things I didn't know was going to happen" I know he means that. I mean, what do you expect? The head is squashing that part too, and for me, I couldn't feel where to push, due to the epi and so I was pushing everything. Also, pregnancy makes me really really regular, like 6am, 1pm, 5pm and sometimes 11pm EVERYDAY. So imagine going 20 hours without taking care of business, it was bound to happen. I was also an overachiever after she was born, I pooped before I left the recovery room. But I'm sure they see that all the time. It's just that no one talks about it. Well I'm talking about it! It happens! (no pun intended)

I pooped too. I was in the birthing pool when it happened. I was embarrassed but my midwife just laughed and said "that's why the birth kit comes with a net."

my sister is due any day now, she'll be 42 weeks this thursday, and she's doing a water birth. she's a nurse too, so she's gotten ALOT of smack about it at work and such.

Back when my mom was birthing babies, they gave enemas before you had the baby. I'm glad they don't do that anymore.

Brandy, we let our epi wear off since it was mainly to let me sleep after 4 days and 14 hours with no end in sight! LOL Fortunately they had stopped the pit before the epi wore off, so my contractions weren't horrible. Actually, the only part that I thought was REALLY painful was his movement when he was wedged in there posterior. I thought my back was breaking whenever he tried to move his head. [>:] I'm hoping we'll be able to get pg again and that I'll have a shot at doing it all again (hopefully with a non-posterior baby). [;)]

Oh man, she turned as she descended. She had spent the previous 4+ days grinding her back on my back and it was excruciating. I think if they had offered me a C at that point, no sleep for 4 days, no food for 24 and the pain I was in.. I may have taken it. I was getting borderline delusional.

Kathryn.. Hubby says he didn't see any of it. He just saw her head start to come out, she turned the right way and came on out in my midwifes hands and then up on to me. I asked him if he really didn't see anything or if he was just being nice. He says he really didn't see anything.

Kath, there is NO WAY I would want an enema before labor/delivery.. I'd be afraid of what that would do to me, I mean... it would speed things up and out and that could be really not pleasant.

I'm hoping that our next kidlet does his/her own thing and I don't need all the help and hosp stuff. I'd love to try it at home and have a few people I can call to get a homebirth done if we want.

I'm 5'4 (on a "tall" day [8D]) and my last baby was 10 lb 8 oz. (I know, I know...[sm=icon_smile_faint.gif]) Short labor, and very small tear needing only 1 stitch. It can be done. [:D]

Thank you Maggie! I am not real short, I mean, I'm not real tall, I'm 5'6, so average I guess. But my midwife thinks this boy is already big. I figured from the beginning this would be a big boy. Don't know why, mothers intuition.

Thank you ladies for letting me know about the bowel movements. And Emily I am so glad you said about that in the birth pool, because we are having a birth pool. Did you deliver him in the pool, or did you end up getting out?

He was born in the pool. I spent most of my labor in my bathtub (until the pool was set up) and the birth pool.

I had a pool too, Kathryn, where I spent from 6 cm to complete. It was lovely - although not enough water in it to fully cover my belly!
