I WISH I had had a birth pool, because you can only sit in a cramped tub for so long, even if people are pouring water down your back (posterior baby...made it feel so much better!)

I didn't have the pool, but the bathtub at home was wonderful for easing pain. I did use the shower at the hospital until they decided I needed constant EFM. The shower was also wonderful - it made a huge difference IMO. I could have stayed in there the whole time.

I had a jacuzzi tub at the birthing center for my fifth baby, and it was amazing! I went from 5 to 10 in a hour. I tried a bathtub with some of my home births and it just wasn't comfortable for me.

I know I've posted this before, but I had an 11 1/2 lb. baby at home, and I'm 5' 1".

They didn't have water birth options for me. I wish they would have. Laying in the tub at home while I was in labor sure helped.

The hospital did have some sort of a jacuzzi tub we could use after birth, but they handed me a container of Comet and said I had to clean it before and after. I decided not to subject myself to that.

I'm 5'0 (small) and had weird rib pain during my pregnancy. Maybe he was stuck but I still like to believe that with the right support I could have had him vaginally. I've heard of smaller-framed women having bigger babies doing it so I still have hope..

I'm 5'4 (on a "tall" day ) and my last baby was 10 lb 8 oz. (I know, I know... ) Short labor, and very small tear needing only 1 stitch. It can be done.

Me too almost exactly!!!
I'm 5'4 on a tall day, prepregnancy I weighed 120lbs. Jacob was also 10lb 8 oz, his shoulders got stuck but I still delivered him and only needed 3 small stitches. I guess not totally naturally as I had to be induced after water breaking, my usual MO. I went almost natural for meds though - despite the pitocin I only used laughing gas.

Surely they couldn't legally make a pregnant lady clean a tub like that?

Or a postpartum lady clean it! Wow, that's like a job for a janitor, isn't it? I think if I did clean it, I'd ask for them to take the 'labor' costs off my bill. Oy.

My male neighbor found out we are having the baby at home, he said "neat!" I thought that was cool. Glad he thinks so.

I don't know how they could, but they did. They even put clean sheets on the back of the recliner and said I needed to change my own bed. I just left them there, I didn't think I needed clean sheets for just a two night stay.

I had dropped a stitch too, and they never once checked me. I was crying so much and even called Larry at 2 in the morning about the pain, but I had no idea why I was in such pain. He called them and chewed them out, so they brought me a portable sitz bath thing, but still never checked. They just kept saying I had a hemorrhoid. When I got home I got a mirror out and looked and started bawling, it looked to me like he had stitched my vajayjay in half or something. I went to the dr and they told me I'd lost a stitch but since it hadn't been fixed right away there was nothing to be done.

This is the same hospital that had blood on the toilet from the previous patient.

I was at the same hospital with Mike, but they changed my bed for me that time. He had gone pee pee on it. They still never checked my stitches and I didn't even realize they were suppose to. I never had a lactation nurse visit either.

But then when I had linz I was at a different hospital. It was wonderful. They checked my stitches several times a day, I saw nutritionists, lactation nurse, all sorts of people. And the other hospital was the teaching hospital and I didn't get near the care the good one did.

Kathryn - it's hard to say how much it helped. I was almost in transition by the time I got in the tub, so my contractions were very intense at that point. I was definitely still in pain - I needed counterpressure from someone constantly during contractions because of where I felt my labour - but since I never had any transition contractions out of the pool, I can't really say.

LOL - good one!!

Kath - that's incredible!! What horrible, horrible nursing/medical care!! I'm ashamed of my profession when I read stories like that.

I feel like a wimp...I had a natural birth...but my wee one was less than three pounds! My labor went so fast I didnt have a chance to explore any of the options. Though I did come pretty close to a homebirth....

That isn't wimpy! You also had fear to contend with, which can make pain worse. I have a friend whose boys were both early (6 or 7 weeks apiece, I think) and her girls were full-time. She said the girls were easier to birth than the boys--those little guys don't give you much to push against, and don't progress the same as a full-term baby.

I wouldn't call it wimpy either. To be in labor that early is scary. For Isaac's sake I'm glad you didn't get a homebirth!

Erin- Are you kidding? You are my natural birth hero!! You were back to work in about a week- ummm... I still only go upstairs once a day at that point, and make my bigger kiddos go on diaper runs so I don't have to get off the couch! Nothing wimpy about your labor or recovery!

HAHA...trust me...I'm no super hero. I would very much like to be sitting at home. But you have to realize...I've not been having to DO anything except ride in the car back and forth to see him. I'm sure I'd be much worse off if I were taking care of a baby. Ijust feel kind bummed because I was SO excited for a natural birth and for this thread...and I did have a natural birth, but not the standard by no means. There wasnt even time to THINK about what was happening. Got to the hospital and was ready to go.

LOL.

I dont know exactly what I mean, I just feel kinda like I dont belong in either, KWIM? I'm not trying to be whiney or anything, its just kind of a weird feeling. I mean I KNOW I gave birth I just dont feel very much like it. I know that probably a good thing, but I dont know...not sure if that makes sense. It all happened so fast that its pretty unreal to me. The whole thing is pretty much not sunk in, I mean I it had barely sunk in that I was pregnant, then never had time to click that I was in labor, and then I havent really "bonded" with Isaac much, not without watchful care, kind of like it would be if you were holding someone else's baby. I know I am, but it doesnt really feel like I am him mom, KWIM? I know I'm going off on a tangent...this probably belongs elsewhere...anyway...I think that all sounds whiney, I'm not whiney, I'm in a good mood, my thoughts are just flowing...... Anyway...ignore me...I'm just crazy!

I know EXACTLY what you mean! I know how you feel, even though I had a c-section with my preemie. Things just aren't quite 'right' AND you haven't had time to settle in.

Anyway, you will just have to take my word for it that you belong here.

Just because it you didn't have to push for hours and use a lot of natural pain-managment techniques doesn't mean it wasn't natural. You belong here, for sure.

Erin, I have read a few birth stories of babies who went full term, and the mom's had similar feelings about the births. They felt kind of taken by surprise because either the labor was so short, or they didn't know it was labor until they baby started coming out! I know you have a different post-birth situation than most of us, but I don't see why you wouldn't belong here.

Vacuum during the c-section? That doesn't make sense to me. Is Smootches around these days? Maybe she could clear that up...

If the baby is stuck in the pelvic bone area...they will use a vacuum to "loosen" baby up to be able to deliver them....it is either that or push on the head and pull on the feet like they did for my niece.....
