I talked with Andrew and he is uncomfortable with me being totally naked. Soooooo, I guess it's a long shirt for me! That's ok. I mean, he understands the one part being naked, kinda has to be, but if I am out of the tub, he wants me covered for the most part. I have these huge tent dresses I made for Nadia's pregnancy that are too big for me now, they double as work dresses. They are very thin cotton, and I think I'll end up wearing those out of the tub and in the tub either a tank top or just a sports bra. We'll see. I think he's seen too many labor videos! LOL!

They might not have a NICU, but all hospitals have the necessary gear to sustain a premature infant for a couple hours. The little country hospital where my parents live doesn't have a NICU(or even a special care nursery) but they can deliver and sustain an infant while they wait for the Angel 'copter or life flight.
It's awesome that your water hadn't broken yet. Gabby was "born" while I was not pushing, it's called the "fetal ejection reflex".

Yup. They probably also have a bag-valve-mask to use on neonates as well.
Anyway, enough of my useless info... I am very glad that you didn't push until the team was there, good on ya!

Erin, I am glad everything worked out for you and that God protected you and Isaac. Sometimes I wonder if I'll know when I'm in labor. I had a nice 'clue' last time. I'm hoping to not have that clue this time. LOL!
The other thread about packing a bag has me wondering.... Is there anything that I should have here at the house that would be good to have? We won't get our birth kit until friday, so I don't know what's in there, but I'd like to know what all you homebirthers had that was really nice to have.

I experience that fetal ejection reflex with Jacob that's for sure. They were telling me not to push and I wasn't (increddibly hard to do!!!) but he was coming anyway! There was a lip in my cervix that wasn't getting out of the way and every time he pressed on it it made me close up instead of being fully 10. That was so hard. Not quite as hard as the getting stuck part though.

Kathryn, here is the list that my midwife gave out. I just got it out today because I wanted to check and see what I still needed  The first group of stuff comes in a birth kit:
2-oz bulb syringe
flexible straws
8-oz peri bottle
packs of sterile 4x4 gauze
alcohol or alcohol prep-pads
plastic-backed sheets
plastic underpads (chux)
2 sterile plastic cord clamps
povidone iodine solution
6 pairs sterile gloves
extra large sanitary napkins
soft gel pack (freezer - if you want to make your own, you can do 2 parts water to 1 part rubbing alcohol. Freeze in a gallon ziplock.)
olive oil (small, unopened bottle)
6 or more receiving blankets or bath towels
4 to 6 washcloths
3 to 4 hand towels
crockpot (for warming washcloths)
large blanket
flashlight
good lighting in room
heating pad
laundry basket
large plastic garbage bags
golden seal root powder (optional, for cord care)
hydrogen peroxide
salt
plastic covering for floors, beds, etc.
For baby immediately after birth: undershirt that snaps (not a onesie), nightgown with drawstring bottom, several newborn hats, socks, diaper, blanket
I also liked having a herbal bath mix for after the birth. It came in my birth kit, but I'm not sure if it comes in all kits. Other things to have are different drinks and snacks to keep up energy, and things the midwives can eat. You want to try for an intake of around 200 calories per hour of labor. If you are interested in recipes for energy drinks during labor, I have several that I can PM you Did your midwife tell you how to make up your bed/pillows?

No, hasn't told me about the bed or pillows yet. I am sure we'll get more instruction this friday, that's when we get the birth kit and the pool. Eck! I can't believe it's that time yet.
What? No pot for boiling water? I've always wondered what that was for. But that is an excellent list, I shall print that out. And yes! Recipes please!!

For the bed, what we ended up doing, was first making up the bed with the sheets we wanted to be on there after the birth. On top of this we put plastic sheeting (like the kind painters use to cover floors and furniture - we found some at Home Depot for several dollars). And on top of that, we put an old pair of sheets that could get messed up. You might want to have several pairs of old sheets handy in case your water breaks while on the bed and you need to put dry old sheets on top again. For the pillows we put on the nice pillow cases, covered that with large garbage bags, and then put old pillow cases on top of that.
The plastic sheeting is also handy for covering the floors. I didn't want to worry about a mess on the floors, so we taped plastic sheeting over any area of carpet I would need to walk on.
Ooh, another thing, if you're using the birth pool, you might need an adapter to attach to the faucet so that you can hook up a hose to fill the pool. I think we ended up hooking ours to where our washing machine is connected because we didn't have an adapter. This was kind of annoying because we couldn't adjust water temperature - we had to fill it with hot, add cold, add hot, add cold, etc. to get it just right.

This will make Andrew happy.... Another trip to Lowe's!! I'll remember to talk to my midwife on friday and find out about the adapter. She might have that with her in the kit. But I hadn't thought about the plastic sheeting. I honestly don't know where I'll be comfortable laboring.
So you are going to have your dd around? Mine will be, at least for part of it. My MIL is coming up to watch her, so she'll be in the house at night and at nap time, but during the day I think my MIL is going to take her out and about. I hope so. Nadia gets really concerned if I am ill or not feeling well. She'll try to 'help' me. Which is really sweet. But she'll keep asking me "Are you better? Are you better? You're better now, right?" I don't want her to worry. Maybe we should prepare her for the chance she might hear or be here for the whole thing.

Yah, our plan right now is for Hannah to be here with us. I'm really hoping that I will go into labor in the late afternoon, and end up with a nighttime birth. That way she will sleep through most of it and wake up to find a baby here! But, if that is not how it works out, I'll probably have my mom come over to make sure Hannah gets her meals and naps at regular times, and has someone to play with. I'm not real comfortable with having anyone here other than dh and the midwives, but I know that it would be easiest on Hannah if her schedule remained consistent and she had a support person.
Have you been talking with your daughter about what will happen to help prepare her? I think that really does help children if you talk about the things that could happen, about the midwives coming, what the midwives will bring/do, what you might be doing or what she might end up hearing. And just reassuring her that that is how it is supposed to be, it doesn't mean there is anything wrong, it's just part of helping the baby get out. Hannah doesn't seem to notice too much when I feel bad - I think she's still too young - but she does get upset when we go to prenatals and the midwives take my blood pressure, use the doppler, etc. I'm still trying to figure out how to get her comfortable with that because I don't want her to freak out when I'm laboring and the midwives come to our house!

Kathryn- Try recording some Baby Stories to watch with Nadia- this helped greatly with Eleni- the first one freaked her out a little (the mom was LOUD), but I just held her and told her that getting a baby is noisy and it is hard work, and we watched a few more, and the new noises or louder noises that other moms made didn't phase her, she would just say- yep, it's hard work getting a baby! I wanted her to be prepared to see me that way in a non-emotional way, and that seemed to help her a lot. Of course, I ended up induced and she didn't see me in labor at all, but still... I'll start watching them again in another month or so since (hopefully) I get to labor at home quite a while this time (also, baby story is pretty good about not being graphic as far as body parts go) when she came to visit me she asked me about what noises I made and was I loud- lol!

boiling water....actually had a couple of uses.
1) to keep hubby busy
2) to mix with cold water to wash midwife's or doctor's hands with strong lye soap (and later carbolic acid)
3) to clean knife/scissors used to cut umbilical cord
4) to mix with cold water to have pleasantly warm water to wash new baby and mommy with after the birth
5) to mix with more cold water to make lukewarm water and lye soap soaking solution for bedding, etc used during birth.
6) remaining water mixed with lye soap to scrub bed frame and floor is necessary after the birth.

I understand how you feel. I felt cheated, even though my c-section was undoubtably necessary (at the time).
Do you have to bake your clothes? My midwife made me put my nightgown, the baby's first outfit and blankets, and a set of sheets in a paper sack, seal it up and bake it, lol, and leave it sealed until the birth.

No, I guess I mean that I didn't feel a love, connection with Nadia while she was in the womb. I do with this one, though and the difference is so drastic. That's what I mean when I say that I cheated her. I feel like I missed out on that connection and so did she.
I don't have to bake my clothes, I do however have to wrap towels and recieving blankets in foil to keep them warm in the oven. I thought that was good idea. I also have to prepare some huge pads with comfrey tea and freeze them. I'll tell you, after having to prepare a whole bunch of stuff, I have a better appreciation for ob wards!

One of my friends who had a home birth ended up birthing her child without the midwife there. She was on the phone with my friend and her husband, and asked them if they had scissors that could be boiled.

I'm glad that you shared your story. So much attention is now on little Isaac, but you are important, too.

Sometimes, particularly with first babies, there is a disconnect between what we know (that is a baby in there) and what we feel (what are we supposed to feel)...where when we have that second baby...we KNOW with our whole selves that there is a little person in there....
so quit worrying about it.
Just love your kids..and chase your toddler as much as you can (it helps labor to go faster!)
