With Grace I had pethidine, gas and an epidural I remember throwing up after the pethidine, I also remember feeling really woozy, like I was drunk and not able to focus on things, but I don't know if that was the gas or pethidine. Neither of those really helped me with pain relief as such, the gas helped me breathe through contractions and the pethidine took the edge off, but the epirural is what helped me the most.

I think they're in the same drug "family", so it makes sense if they have similar reactions.

I refused stadol during my labor because of how I react to Demerol. I don't have anything freaky happen but I get really sleepy and out of it. I know several women IRL (close friends and SILs) who have had stadol and none of them have anything good to say about it. I knew that if it effected me like demerol but did not take away the pain I would be totally unable to cope. I was having enough trouble dealing with it while being chased back into bed every 5 minutes because Bug kept playing hide and seek with the fetal monitor! I had my c-section under an epidural and had no problems with it. Kris

I'm very allergic to Demerol and the related drug family (all cause anaphylaxis) ... I hate drugs in general, but when I was being given pitocin, I needed *something* to help cut through the pain ... especially since they increased the pit every 3 minutes, which didn't allow enough time for my body to catch up ... I essentially had a 12 hour non-stop contraction! I can't remember what I ended up having, but it barely took the edge off, and just turned me into a royal pain to be around (I got REALLY moody). The nitrous gas did nothing except make me vomit (just like it did as a kid at the dentist) I am planning a homebirth this time around, but am well aware of the fact that I might have to transfer to hospital for augmentation (my body doesn't like progressing beyond 4cm on its own) ... but if I do warrant a transfer, and it isn't because of an emergency situation, then we are talking about tranferring to the hospital an hour away, rather than the local one ... the one an hour away lets the midwives control the induction, rather than an OB nurse and the 'rules' about increasing the pit every 3 minutes ... midwives usually aim for 15-30 minutes, depending on how mom's body is handling it.

Stadol just makes me feel drunk (had it with Hannah)...and it did *absolutely* nothing for the pain. I could still feel everything and I couldn't concentrate on breathing through them. Horrid, horrid stuff.

I'm surprised if so many people don't like how they feel on Stadol or Demerol, why on earth do they give it so much? Give me an epidural over that garbage any day!

The room would spin so bad I had to keep my eyes closed for the last part of my labor (with son). And like you it did nothing for the pain.

Is Stadol laughing gas?

Laughing gas is nitrous oxide, so I think not.

Tammy, I don't think they use Stadol here, I'm pretty sure it's a narcotic. I can't remember the name of the drug they used at our hospital, it's similar to morphine, but had a different name. It didn't make me feel weird, it just didn't do anything at all. Actually the epi didn't fully work either, I still had a patch on my left side that I could still feel everything. I didn't want to use the gas. The nurse kept encouraging me to, but I didn't. Then the doctor came in and he and the nurse had an argument about whether she should have given it to me so soon, that it had negative effects in delivery or something. I was sitting in the corner like "umm, I haven't used it and don't plan to, so no need to argue..."

Stadol is either given by intramuscular injection or through an IV.

My epi got break through "patches" right around the 12 hour mark, and BOY was I glad when they just did a new one. But... it didn't totally take about the symptoms of transition which I found interesting. I still was nauseous and just felt "different", when I told my mom she said "oh, your just in transition. If you anything like me you'll have a baby in a couple hours". And sure enough, 2 hours later Gabby was born.

I always experience at least part of transition through the epidural also, and also the urge to push. It's part of the reason I love the epidural...it takes the intensity away for most of the labor and still allows me to experience parts of it that I can handle. Of course, I know that is not everyone's epi experience...but it has been mine.

Sure, Manda. I sorta have one too after you go. I got demerol or stadol or something like that with Timmy. I'll never do that again. It's like laboring while you're drunk. I know from past experience that I'm really not capable of much when I'm drunk, LOL! I ended up with the epidural with both of them. With Jimmy, I didn't waste any time and asked for it right away. LOL! I couldn't feel ANYTHING both times, but I managed to figure out how to push correctly.
