I got them. But they are good for 3 years.

I am not sure if they are good for them or not but figured might as well.

As with people shots, there is a risk for anything. There is some debate that we don't need to vaccinate cats as frequently as we do and there are a few on the fringes who don't like vaccinations at all. The rabies shots however are usually required by law and if you don't have proof of it, there can be all kinds of legal ramifications if your cat were to ever bite someone (which, well, cats do). It could even result in the cat being put down.

Most vets can give the vaccine though that is good for 3 years so IMHO, it's not a big deal. Even most of those with concerns about vaccinations, don't have a problem with the 3 year shot. There is a rare condition in which a type of cancer can crop up in vaccination sites, but it's extremely rare. Your cat would be MUCH more likely to contract some of the nasty little viruses out there - and some of them are truly awful.

If you are really concerned, I know some folks who do "titers" (sp?). It does cost money, but it will help your vet know if your cat needs more vaccinations or not. Others, simply vaccinate less frequently (instead of yearly, maybe every 3 years). Most simply vaccinate for what a cat is truly at risk for.

Personally, My girls get their rabies every 3 years and the basic ones every year although I am considering stretching that out to every other year or every 3 years - not because I am fearful it's bad for them, but rather that more and more vets don't believe it's necessary.

I used to get my kits vaccinated every year for rabies and distemper but now only every 3 years or so. My reasoning for this is--their paws have never touched earth. They are indoor only cats and have no contact with other cats. So it would be really difficult for them to be infected with any infectious disease

You probably missed it but she said she has a Ragdoll. We have 2 of them, and they are the sweetest kitties. One is like 18 pounds, not a typical Ragdoll, and the other is about 8 pounds and a real sweetie.

Then we have a stray and a Bengal.

Oh yes they are. I'll try and post a picture of him. He's about 9 lbs and almost 1. He loves dog food and dog treats! We have a golden who's around 8 and the two of them together crack me up. I've never had a cat that liked dog food before. He now knows where the treats are and begs for them when I give the dog his. He also lays one his back alot, which I've never seen a cat do. He's just the goofiest cat.

So do ours Deb! And they love to drink water out of the tub faucet. When I turn it on they both come running. Lucy, the stray comes too but she just watches them. They just jump in the tub and start drinking.

Kath, lol it must be a personality thing because our's like water too. I shooed him out of the shower the other day because I keep thinking he might get sick from licking soapy water. I put him in the pool one time and he just swam to my dh. I haven't given him a bath yet, though. I kind of want to get aonther one, but don't have the money right now.

Whoops sorry I did miss it. I want another cat, but we have two cats and one dog and that's all we have room for now. I might look more into the Ragdoll kitties. They sounds so adorable!!!

Hi all!

Woo Hoo! I'm a cat owner. Mind if I join all you cat lovers We just got a kitten. This is my first time owning a kitten. It's a big step up from parakeet to goldfish, then hamster now to kitten. Wow. I don't know who's more nuts about her me or the girls LOL

We got her on Saturday. She's a little 3 week old Calico. She's sooo cuuute! She's a stray that the neighborS kid found next door in their yard and kept her for a couple of days and asked if I wanted her. Hubby said we could have her. When I picked her up I asked the neighbor if she'd been cleaned up and didn't have fleas. He said no and silly me I took his word . Lo and behold yesterday when we we were brushing her we find that she indeed had fleas We took no chances and went and got flea shampoo and the stuff you put on her neck and the Hurtz (sp?) spray for the house. The guy at the checkout probably though we had a really big problem LOL.

Anyways. We got her bathed and blow dried so she wouldn't chilled and washed the bedding and it seems like we've probably got it contained before it could get out of hand. We're also going to fog the hous with one of those flea fogger things. With us and kitty out of the hosue of course

I'm planning on taking her to the vet on Friday for her first checkup. DH thinks I don't need to and since it costs $$$ But I'd have a better peace of mind if I do. Any advice you veteran kitty owners can give is welcom

Sorry for the extra long post

I don't think I posted about our kittens. Our mama cat brought her babies out of the woods finally--she brought them into the laundry room on a rainy night. We have three little tiger striped babies--they look identical. I built them a cat house and put them back outside, though, because we don't want more inside cats. We'll won't be able to keep them, though. We have too many cats already.

Are you sure she is 3 weeks--they don't open their eyes until 2 weeks and nurse until about 6. Are you feeding her with a bottle? If she is eating on her own she is older. Always wise to take them to a vet especially strays--and most kittens have fleas--if you don't get rid of them she will have worms. And I always have my cats spayed or neutered--prevents more unwanted stray cats. Take good care of her and she will keep you.

Yeah, she's 3 weeks maybe even close to 4. I was looking at youtube videos of kittens her age and she's looks like that age. I don't know what the neighbor was feeding her solid food or what. But I'd been looking on the internet for kitty info before getting her and got her a bottle and kitty formula so I started her on that. I also read that they start getting weaned around her age so I tried feeding her canned kitten food and she ate it right away. So I give her both formula - for the nutrition and also the food. She seems pretty grown, she walks and even runs a bit. So she's probably closer to 4 weeks.

I spoke with DH and I'm gonna be taking her to the vet tommorrow. I called and the visit is $45.00 bucks not including anything else extra. It's alot less than I expected. I thought it was gonna be like $150 or something. I have no idea what vet costs are. How much do vet visits typically run anyways? And shots?

Its 40.00 for vacinations (yearly) at my vet. Don't know about a standard office visit.

You might as well ask about price of the spaying when you take her in. Need to get that done when they are around 6 months old.

Our cat caught and ate a mouse yesterday. That was both good and bad. We got the cat years ago when we discovered we had a mouse problem. We didn't know the mice were back until now. But our cat is nine years old, and has FIV. He's not allowed out of the house because of the FIV, and so he lays around the house lazily most of the time. I didn't know he still had it in him. We were grossed out but I told him he was a good kitty.

Annie64, that's a good kitty. Gross but good

Well, I took the kitten to the vet yesterday. She checked out ok. She weighed a mere 7oz. The vet gave her a de-wormer and gave me vitamin drops to give her at home. All came out to 80 something. Not too bad.

But this morning she was meowing and kind of spastic. I thought she was having a nightmare. So I tried waking her she was awake but was kind of lethargic. I have her wrapped in a towel and she's sleeping. She won't drink her milk so I'm thinking she's had a reaction to the deworming meds. I'm worried she's really ill . I'm letting her rest for now and checking on her. I'm hoping this will pass and she'll be back to herself. My 6 y/o dd was worried for her and even prayed for her. She's a very compassionate little girl

Has anyone's kitty had a reaction to deworming?

Well I've been checking on her and she doesn't look good. Now she's too weak to even meow . I don't get it she was fine just yesterday.

I hope she pulls through. I don't know how the kids will take it if something happens
