It's like giving them a shot - it's just injected quickly under the skin. She was already in for her surgery, so they did it at the same time - no additional pain for her. The best time to have it done is like that - when you're getting your cat fixed.

I will have to ask our vet this, but about how much did it cost you in comparison to getting your cat fixed? Is this really expensive?

I wish I had my other cat microchipped....she got lost right before a hurricane hit where my mom lives, so I would have liked to find her, but we never did.

Oh, it wasn't much at all - from what I remember - the entire surgery with that was less than $200, and with her being an older cat, we didn't realize she was going into heat at the time of the surgery, so that made it more expensive. I want to say it was between $30 and $50.

She's had absolutely no adverse effects from it. I'm glad I did it. I can't stand the thought of losing her.

our momma cat was a stray, so there's no way we can keep her inside all the time...she is driving us batty right now cause we can't let her out until after she is fixed (don't want her to end up pregnant again, and she is weaning her kittens right now...so it's very possible). The other two are inside only, but the male wants to go out and tries to sneak out...not sure what he intends to do if he ever gets out....his sister though has no desire to ever get anywhere near the door.

ok...question......
we are thinking of replacing our couch set with tax refund money. The couch and love seat we have were given to us and we aren't too keen on them...constantly having to fix the cushions a million times a day. We want something with less maintenance....and probably just a couch and chair instead of the love seat...it doesn't work for our living room very well.
Question is...are there any fabric choices we should stay away from because of having cats? What about leather (or the fake stuff that looks like leather, cause we are cheap and would probably end up with the cheaper stuff)?

Suede is the best in my opinion. My parents have had a faux suede couch for years and it is still in tip top condition even though the cats have scratched at it. We have a suede chair and our cats try to wreck it, but haven't been able to. Leather is the worst because one tiny hole is very noticeable and can keep ripping. Usually when a cat scratches or just gets a nail stuck in a leather couch it pulls out the cotton fabric underneath the leather making the couch look even worse.

thanks...I will tell Paul. My only problem with suede is that I can't stand lines...even if the vacuum leaves lines I sweep them out...lol. So I feel like I would constantly be brushing the material with my hand just so it wouldn't annoy me

Haha I always brush the lines away too! But it is so easy to clean especially when an animal pukes on it.

doinkdom, The only way to get your cat to quit waking you guys up is to put her in a basement (if you have one) or another room and hope she doesn't go crazy in just one room. Cats are just vocal and like to talk and get continuous attention.

I think the cost of getting a cat (or any animal) chipped is relative to how your family would feel if they lost the pet. Here it is a one-off payment and my vet has Munchie's chip number so if she is lost and picked up she is on record. They even know where the chip is (most are injected in the shoulder, her's is a little way down her side).

Getting a microchip varies with the vets. One vet wanted $75.00, but that is in a high income area of town. Just 6 miles away, another vet charged only $42.00. There may be some issues with the degree of registration, but not enough to matter. Animal control still scans the animal one way or other. If your vet is average, it should not cost any more than $50.00.

We had a 9 month old female cat spayed, first round of shots and microchipped for less than $300.00. Male cat neutering is probably half to 3/4 the cost of a female. Shots and neutering should run less than $150.

Petco is a pet store chain that operates in my area. They have pet vaccination clinics on Saturdays for less than the vet charges. If you get the vaccinations there, you can still save money because you have the records ready for the neutering process.

the vet we are going to take the cats to said they charge $75 for spaying or neutering. Shots are in three rounds three weeks apart (but they said we can pay up front for all three)...first is $12, second is $22, and third (I think) is $32. They add something to each round...so that's why it goes up. So total for shots and getting fixed we are looking at $66+75=$141 so far for three cats...and just $66 for the fourth kitten (it's not old enough to get fixed anytime soon). That doesn't include all the flea meds we need to get too. So far right under the $500 mark... WOW....see, this is WHY we didn't have any pets for a long time!!!!

we don't have any pet places around here....Witchita Falls TX and OKC are the closest, and those are both basically an hour away...two different directions. I think we will stick to the vet's price and save the gas

I have had people tell me they got the vaccine and vaccination equipment from the feed store. But calculating the weight and so forth may or may not be tricky. You can't just inject whatever you think is right.

Woohoo! My favorite subject and God's greatest creation. I love cats - and have since even before I was born. My parents cat used to curl up and nap on my mom's belly when I was in the womb...

Here is a cat history (since I was an adult at least!)

Winky was my first cat as an adult. I had recently graduated from college and was needing a buddy. I went to the local human society. They didn't have any kittens at the time, so I checked out the adult cats and kept coming back to Winky. He was such a lover. I'd pick him up and he'd snuggle right up. He had chosen me and there was no saying no. He was missing one eye and had a pellet from a gun in the back of his neck. He had been surrended twice to the humane society. He talked all the time, but it was talking. I mean, you could carry on entire conversations with him. People laughed when I said that but then they met him. He loved to snuggle and when I would get home from work, he would be waiting for me. He would follow me around until I picked him up. Then he would let me carry him all around. I learned to cook one-handed - him in one arm and cooking utensils in the other. He died of FIP at around 10-11 years of age, the worst thing a cat can get. I still miss him. He is buried in my parents garden and I have a special angel statue by my lilac bush at my new house just for him. Here is his picture

I adopted Phoebe from the humane society to get Winky a buddy a few years after adopting him. She is super affectionate with me which is good - because she has been a challenge. She has food allergies so there are only 2 foods she can eat or else she scratches her head and neck bloody. And one of those foods she doesn't like. She is also the reason I have to keep the bathroom doors closed and no small rugs within her reach. She likes to pee on them... She's pretty persnickety and I usually tell guests to steer clear. She bites. I've learned the warning signs though. All that to say that she is super affectionate with me. She is very pretty and quite a character. Here is my "box babe". She loves to give me kisses and when she wants attention, you WILL give her attention. She is a very long, lean cat (she walks like a big cat) but has a tiny, squeaky voice. And her tongue could strip the bark off a tree... Here is one of my favorite pictures of Phoebe as a teen...

A week after losing my precious Winky, I was sitting in my office talking with a volunteer when we heard a persistant cry in the window well outside my window. I peaked out to see a wee baby kitty. She was banged up and bloody and all alone. My heart melted. I brought her inside knowing she wouldn't make it alone and stuck her in a box until my lunch break when I would take her to the vet. She curled up in the box and purred her little heart out giving me looks of pure love. I wasn't really ready for another kitty after losing Winky but my heart melted. She is the most unique cat I've ever known. We think she is a scottish fold. She is extremely laid back and is always somewhere close. She is my little buddy and loves to give me kisses and snuggle. As I type this, she is curled up on my computer monitor. This is her "bulldog" look. She has a flat face and an underbite. She thinks her name is "you're so cute" because that's all she hears from people when they meet her! More than any cat I've ever known, she does what she wants to do. End of story. She's no destructive, she just has to get into everything - and smart enough to do it. I gave up long ago trying to keep her out of things or off of things - like my Christmas creche...

After moving into my house, I decided it was time to add to my zoo. OK, that and I made the mistake of looking on petfinder.com. I fell in love with little baby Asia. She is a siamese mix. The fosterers said she was afraid of dogs but she quickly became best buddies with my cocker, Audrey. She is my "Miss Piggy" as she thinks she needs to eat when any of the other critters eats and it shows... She is also "The Pest" as she loves to chase the other cats... whether they want to be chased or not... She has the loud, vocal meow of her siamese mom and the purr to match. At night, I will hear her meowing and call her name. She comes running and leaps on the bed purring like a jet engine. I think she thought she was left alone! She loves to sleep on my legs at night or snuggle with the other critters. Here is a more recent picture of her.

Anyway, that is my zoo and the reason a queen sized bed is too small at night... They are my furry kids and I spoil them rotten. I wouldn't have it any other way.

As far as the questions: All my cats are indoor only but all are microchipped in case they get out. I am pretty opinionated regarding cat care (as some may have noted in other cat threads) but it's only because I care about them so much.

I will be microchipping when I get him fixed. I've seen stories of people being separated from their pets after a disaster... I just couldn't see that happening for either of us.

Some cats will talk---not literally, of course. But when you get to know them, there is no mistaking their meaning. They would be talking if they knew how!

LOL. Our male cat Zabi would stand the middle of the room and meow til he got my attention and once he had it he would casually walk over to the front door to be let out.

Once he stared at me (it was funny, almost a dirty look) because I was sitting in his favorite spot. You could almost tell he was annoyed.

Yeah! You can just see their brains working sometimes! I could tell from Winky's meow exactly what he was talking about. There was the "I'm lonely" to "I'm hungry" to "I see a bird outside" to "I see people outside", etc.

Speaking of staring: One night I woke up to Phoebe and Asia sitting side by side on my chest staring intently at my face and purring loudly... It was kind of freaky....

My cat was beyond insatiable this morning! I had given her nearly a full can of food over the course of a few hours, and when she was begging for me, we decided to go with the dry food. I put the bowl up on the table so I didn't have to lean over (hurt back) and she tried to jump up there to get to it! What a pig!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, I filled the bowl and she ate for about 15 minutes. She had been meowing at all of us - insistently for about 15 minutes before this time. I guess she really WAS hungry - but I couldn't imagine after all the canned food she had already eaten.

What would we do without our cats?????

Oh, and she's woken me up staring at me too.

Cats are the best! I can't imagine not having my girls. Not only the entertainment, but the snuggles and the love they give. Cats rule!

Yesterday, I went outside to fill the birdfeeder and he slipped outside with me. He stays for just a couple of minutes so he can eat the grass. After a couple of minutes, I open the window and ask him "Are you ready to come inside?" to which he looked up briefly, said "no" and went about his business. He "talks" when he's mad, too (like when I tell him no, and he walks away in a huff)

I used to smile in a polite disbelief when my grandmother told me her dogs could talk.
