*sigh*

Such a warm and fuzzy thread. *snuggles*

Let's see...true love...seeing the bad side of someone and still loving every inch of him.

I am quite a bear and my best friend laughs and tells me when someone can match my wit and 'personality' I'll know he loves me forever!

The Bible DOES mention a love that NEVER fails in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8.

quote:

4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8Love never fails.

If everybody would practice this kind of love, the world would be a better place, IMHO.

At the risk of widening this beyond romantic love:

my singles group had a talk on this a couple weeks ago. Love is the kind of person who when you call at 3 am is not only asking what the problem is but are grabbing their shoes and keys and rushing out the door to be there for whatever problem you have!

love is being able to listen to someone on anything and knowing that you are safe.

and perhaps this: greater man hath no one than this: that he lay down his life for his friends.

To me, the real definition of love is not necessarily that we love those who love us, but that we love those who don't love us.

Sorry for breaking up the romantic dreams here. Carry on.

No, don't be.

I was kind of thinking about that, too. I think it is useful, for our purposes here, to understand that romantic love has a different description than true love.

None of us can improve on The Word when it comes to defining love. It's Him in His Own Words. I think what we are trying to describe here is what does love look like in human form.

As for romantic love, I think it is true love with one extra twist: I love you, selflessly and biblically, but also, only.

Exclusively.

I will love no one else this same way that I love you.

That's real close. but somehow seems just short. I loved M with my entire heart. I cherished her. I will love my next wife with my entire heart. I will cherish her also.

Are the two loves different? I don't really think so. The feelings and actions will pretty much be the same.

I do agree that romantic love is exclusive. You can only love one person like that at a time because true romantic love only grows bigger and deeper with the passage of time. (This assumes that you love them so much that you will be working at the relationship full time)

Are the two loves different? I don't really think so. The feelings and actions will pretty much be the same. True, but still, it will have to be a different love. You're a different person. Having loved and lost M will make you a different person for your next wife, different than the husband M had. Similar, but different.

I do agree that romantic love is exclusive. You can only love one person like that at a time Which is, I think, a merciful gift from God. It's what enables you to move forward and be happy again after losses.

Actually, John, I confess that I did even think of you while I was posting that. My former boyfriend was, like you, widowed young. As we considered marriage, we talked about this sort of thing quite a bit. He said it was kind of like the love he had for his two children; how, when his daughter was born, he couldn't imagine ever loving another child that fiercely. Then, when his son was born, he understood that he could love another child just as intensely, yet in a different way. He loves them just as much, but differently.

I guess maybe that's why polygamists can claim to love all their wives? But that's a thread for a different day!

This is true love!

Resignation Speech

The book he wrote is called "A Promise Kept".

This is how we all want to be loved by our spouse. Willingly and lovingly, not begrudgingly. I know I do.

From reading his posts, this is what I imagine John_O's attitude was like.

The truest love is that which Christ gave for us on the Cross. That is love perfected.

True love is saying it, living it and meaning it. It perservers and it NEVER quits. True love is . . . well, true.
