So now that we have moved beyond the picture maybe we can talk about why Jesus is enough for the believer even when He doesn't seem to answer our prayers in the way we want Him to. Do you know what I mean? I guess it depends on if you think of Jesus as Lord or Santa. I expect Him to know what I need when I need it because He is all knowing. It would be impertinent for me to tell Him what I need and when I need it.

Well there is a difference between saying, "This is what I think I need, but I'm trusting you," and saying, "I want _______." Too many Christians confuse the two. But that's another topic. I like your answer Kath!

James 4:3,2 4:2 You want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. 4:3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. There ya go.

I don't like it. He looks like a lonely homeless old man. He would have been only in his early 30's when he went into the wilderness for 40 days. I know He felt all the things we feel, hunger, loneliness, sadness. But somehow, this picture does not seem right. quote:
Is Jesus alone enough for me or do I love Him for His gifts? Will I follow the lamb wherever He goes? I love Him because He first loved me, because he died on the cross for me, because He gave me these precious gifts. Not because He is alone enough. And yes, I will follow Him where ever He leads me. (something I could not say a few short weeks ago before he touched my life afresh)

Hello KisstheSon, This painting struck me sincerely. My mind is not exactly abstract, and it is nice to have a visual idea of the suffering Christ endured.

"Foxes have holes. birds of the air have nests but I the Son of man have no place to lay My head." -the gospel of luke. "he went to a lonely place to pray." "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?"

Okay, when He prayed that, He was on the cross. How does that fit in here? I'm still lost as to why the topic is "Is Jesus really enough" but the subject matter has been mainly about a picture. I'll say it again. Jesus is enough. A picture of Jesus... can't even start to be enough.

Will you love Me simply as Myself EVEN if I came bearing no gifts?" Gifts meaning riches, blessings, deliverence from troubles... Is Jesus enough?

But He did come bearing gifts, He gave us the ultimate gift, eternal life. If he was just another man, just someone who talked alot, gave nothing, did not show us that He is the son of God, with nothing to offer a lost world, did not give the gift of eternal life, then no, I would not follow such a man. He did come with all these things and He did bring them for us. Accepting them is part of the plan for our redemption. We need to be delivered from our troubles, we need blessings at times and He has freely given us these things.

ORIGINAL: kisstheson Note* Kingly riches. His powers meaning: He didn't answer your prayer according to the way YOU wanted Him to. Trying reading the post again. So the big question is this. Who is Jesus to you? You can't call Him King of Kings and try to treat Him like a gigantic genie in a bottle. He is God the Son. He is our sovereign Lord. If he doesn't answer your prayer the way you want Him to, it isn't Him with the problem. Remember this. Prayer isn't lining God up with your desires; it's lining your desires up with Him. Jesus is enough. He's enough to redeem our lives from the pit. He's enough to pay the price for our rebellion. His grace is enough to carry us through every storm, and even still them completely if need be. Is He enough to give us what we want? I suppose, but considering He's on the throne and I'm not I want what He wants for me. It's far better than what my desires here could be. This comes from a Max Lucado book. It's not an exact quote, but it conveys the idea rather well. "Proper prayer reveals God to you before it reveals your needs to God." From another book. "Maybe the problem isn't that God doesn't give us the things we hope for, but that we don't know the proper things for which to hope." (You may want to read that one again.) You said this in direct reply to me.quote:
"Will you love Me without all a display of My miraculous powers and Kingly riches? Will you love Me simply as Myself EVEN if I came bearing no gifts?" The answer to that question lies in the answer to another question. Do you love Jesus or do you love the gifts He gives?

What if He doesn't give you material riches? Yes, I know He does bless you but what if sometimes His answer is, "No." Is Jesus enough even then? Even more the gift of eternal life, the greatist gift is Jesus Himself.

Prayer isn't lining God up with your desires; it's lining your desires up with Him. ArmyDude--your comment made me think of a verse that I explored and found to be so much more than it appears on the surface! It is Psalm 37:4-5 "Delight yourself in the LORD; And He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, and He will do it." The word 'delight' in the old Strong's Exhaustive Concordance defines the word in the original Hebrew including a meaning in a context of pottery terms, being 'malleability' as in working with clay! If we put the term 'delight' in that context of being 'malleable', it might say: "If we volunteer our hearts to be available and malleable in His hands, He will form and mold us to desire the very thing He desires for us, and ultimately for His glory." I just love that picture! And, I have always loved all the pottery analgies God uses so much in His word regarding us as His creation! Wanna paint one like that, kisstheson? It would be awesome!

I've copied and pasted a direct quote from myself from another post to answer this OP. quote:
...without God, life is really not worth living. I can’t fully depend on people and I certainly can’t find “the true meaning of life” in any material thing, because they are all only temporary, but God is everlasting, and it is in Him and because of Him that I have purpose to be here.

I don't think asking God for whatever is wrong. Its the motivation behind it. As much as I dislike, "if it is your will Father" prayers, there is a lot of truth in that. One way to find God's will is to ask what His will is. You hafta ask. Now, you should not ask selfishly. I can give a personal example... Had a lung disease. It was expensive. I asked God to take the financial burden from my family. I thought that would mean we would get insurance. He healed me. It wasn't what I asked for. I was genuine in my request. I knew God could heal me but I wasn't concerned with healing. I was concerned about the burden I was placing on my family. Now God could have done what He did for other purposes and I didn't realize this at the time but I think he "honored" my heartfelt concerns in a way that truly glorified Him. ( Ain't no way I could have ever earned that blessing ) God's ways are a mystery but having a heart for God and others is truly a way...and I can't say always or never here....to recieve your blessings.
