Do you and your christian friends gather to worship God in your car...every week?

Some of our friends do but most people in our church drive to church in a van. Sometimes hubby drives his truck. We do not even have a car just a truck and a van.

There is one guy in our church who rides his motorcycle to church. Are Christians allowed to ride motorcycles? Motorcycles are associated with bikers and that would be the appearance of evil. Hmmm..........

He isn't asking what you drive to church, he's asking if you hold a worship service in your vehicle with other believers every week.

Also, is your car main purpose to worship in?

Was iut bought with freely given sacrificial donations for the purpose of worship?

Is it prayed over every day?

Do people find Jesus there?

Do you take communion in your car?

Sure you can worship God in your car...or anywhere and we should. That does not diminish the place where we all gather to worship and to encourage each other To me...it should be a very special place worthy of respect

Where two or more are gathered in my name I am in the midst thereof. I was just wondering what made a sanctuary any more holy than anywhere else peo;lea regathered that believe in God.

I agree but someone enjoying water, coffee, juice or whatever is not going to disgrace it. Would God rather we be Christian who look and act like we need milk of magnesia or would He rather we be joyous Christians. Sometime we Christians run around pointing our fingers at people and acting like Ned Flanders than just kicking back and relaxing a little in life. This spiel is not pointing at anyone specifically.

I am new to this thread but let me add something.

I am a diabetic, have been ever since I was 7. I require something to drink pretty much constantly. Growing up in school I had to bring a drink to class. Other kids were not allowed to drink so I felt like an outcast because I had to have a drink with me. The same thing goes for church. I would be uncomfortable walking into a church where no one is drinking. Knowing that I HAVE to drink something, I would feel very awkward. Church shouldn't be awkward should it? Same thing goes for food as sometimes I might have to pull out a pack of skittles to get some sugar in me.

One last thing. Every church I've visited with a no food or drink policy, the pastor has had a drink of some sort under his podium. ;)

Well you seem to have done the right thing by drinking during singing and music. I don't see any problem with that, if I were the pastor or one of the parishoner.

May be you could talk it over to the pastor and explain to him about your medical case after the service. That what I would do if I feel self-conscious.

I love your kitty. Looks very much like mine!!!

This week I had some, um, drainage, during the singing. I wondered which would have been more distracting, a sip of water or a choking cough!

We have several services on the weekend all contemporary ones except the first one on Sunday which is more traditional and has mostly older people in it.

Can you imagine to confusion if they all had drinks through the service and had to go to the bathroom? Hundreds of older people trying to make their way to the bathrooms.

( By the way that is my attempt at humor )

If you have to have a drink for medical reasons then so be it. If not, I challenge you to a drink fast for your next gathering. Maybe once a month, just go drinkless, if you can.

I have problems with dry mouth due to medication, so sometimes I take a bottle of water or soda with me to church. I take a sip or two during the service, but I sense the disapproval of other church members when I do it and consequently I feel conspiculus.(sp?) Should I continue to do this or leave my drinks at home?

BTW, the water and sodas have screw top lids that can be closed, preventing spilling.

I think if the trumpet sounds, and you're drinkin' water or soda, and you're in church, I don't think you'll be left behind for that.

Now if you don't really have a medical dry mouth condition, I think Jesus would still not leave you behind for it.

I did go to a different church for a couple of weeks earlier this year.

One Friday night, I was chattin' up the ushers before goin' in. As I started for the door, one of 'em asked me to not drink from my Mt Dew during service. I respect highly someone who will impose the rules.

What does this question really matter in the vast scheme of things? If a church is this petty to micromanage "God's" affairs to this degree then it is not for me.

It is, without a doubt, acceptable to drink beverages during congregational services if you need to under any circumstances. Anyone who looks down upon you for doing it should be reprimanded by the elders of your congregation. If your elders disapprove I'd find a better community to worship in.

I suppose if everyone in the congregation had a mountain dew in their hand it may be distracting. I've gone into a church with a coffee I had grabbed to enjoy on the way and at prayer but I felt it wasn't right to drink it during the service for some reason, altho sitting in the same bench for sunday school was fine. I wouldn't encourage it but neither would I discourage it, some may need it.

The Vineyard congregation I attend has a coffee break between the worship time and when we have our message. We use regular coffee mugs and there's always snacks that the youth or some other group are selling. After the service, volunteers wash the mugs and we carry on. Sometimes, people even show up to the services with outside beverages and no one looks at them strangely.

What do you think things were like in the First Century home meetings? What are cell groups, or home meetings, you participate in like? If it is acceptable to sip water at a home meeting then why not in the fancy church building?

The issue is not drinking water, etc, the problem is reverence. There is nothing wrong with water or a beverage being drunk in the sanctuary. The problem is if the house of God ever becomes like a movie theater and people are drinking soda and eating popcorn during praise & worship or the message. Eating other than communion is pushing the line and distracting to others. As long as people are participators and not spectators, there is no problem with beverages. Thank God Jesus came to bring relationship and not religion.

"House of God?" The place where believers meet is not something special. There is a huge difference between the Temple of God in Jerusalem, where they happen BBQ all day long during their prayer services, and a building where people gather to pray and fellowship.

This is the mentality that we've got to deal with from our past and the mixing with Greek ideas from the patristic times.

quote:

The Cathedral Mentality

Another by-product of the Greek worldview was the desire to escape this world for a celestial paradise. After all, reality was not to be found in the “hoe-hum” world of earthly existence, but in the high and lofty realm of thoughts and intellectual ideals. Having accepted the Platonic dualism in which the material world is considered evil, the Church focused its attention on the hope of escaping the world for a heavenly existence. This dream of rising above the mundane and evil world was encouraged by building “out of this world” cathedrals. When Christians came to church, it was as though they left the commonness of their lives and stepped into the celestial beauty of the world to come. The architecture, the music, the magnificent art and sculptures, the furniture, and the religious ceremonies all combined to offer the Christian an experience that was not remotely connected to the world in which they lived. In short, the cathedral offered a taste of heaven, a momentary escape into the celestial joys which salvation ultimately promised.

The discussion I've encountered in this topic reminded me of how different our Greek thinking is from the Hebraic thinking of our Master and His disciples.

There are some really conservative congregations that would mind - and others that are less formal that would not.
My feeling is that if the people in your church are annoyed by a bottle of water being sipped then they should get a life. But thats just my opinion.

So true! There is so much in our church life, fears and thinking that come from outside sources.

quote:

Our bodies are the temple of God, not a building. Uh-oh, I DO drink soda and popcorn which in a round about way is bringing it into the temple of God.
