HERE is the bench I redid. I need to add a crystal knob to the drawer, but otherwise it's done. The picture is a bit shiny, sorry about that.

Jessica, that is a cool gossip bench!! You did a great job redoing it, I never would've thought to go modern with it like that. I have an antique one as well, but it has the original finish.

Thanks! Rachel - I was told that it's a "telephone bench" from Germany. What's a gossip bench?

Same thing. Gossip bench. Telephone bench. You put your phone on the table part and sit on the bench and talk/gossip on it. LOL. Mine is probably from the 1940s-50s, U.S.

What's a gossip bench? it's the same thing.....and yes, very popular in the antique shops in Germany....I can't tell you how many I saw when looking in them over there. Those and sewing machines (the big treddle machines) were everywhere you looked.

Jessica, that looks so great! You really transformed it, good job! How is the kitchen painting project going?

I have a question for you guys... We have a brick fireplace - brick goes from ceiling to floor. It is shades of light red, melon and white. The mantel is white - just straight across top, nothing on the sides. The fireplace is in the living room - which is fairly small, with paneling that has been painted off-white. Question: Would you guys paint the brick to make the room seem larger? if so, would you go with whatever color the walls are or contrast it?

No I would not paint the brick.....I personally don't think it makes it look good if the brick is painted out...it tends to blend in more in the room instead of making a focal point in the room. Maybe you could build some false columns under the mantel though to build it out a little and frame out the fireplace a little more.

that's pretty!!! no I wouldn't paint it out still....I think the color of it warms up the room because it brings out the wood tones in the frames around the window. If the room seems small, maybe it's the furniture you are using in there that is dwarfing the room?

yeah, that giant recliner is a little overwhelming I know. But, that would be the "king's" chair...so whatcha gonna do? It's the only thing he asked that I not change, unless it was to replace it and of course, that would be far outside the confines of our budget because I would want a wall-hugger or tree-hugger one that doesn't have to sit in the middle of the room.

The insert is black, so what about painting the mantel black? Or would that really make it look "off?"

the black I would say depends on the other decor of the room....do you use black in your other metals in the room? If so then it might look good. Kind of hard to say though. I tend to like black though....my mantra is if it doesn't look good paint it black...and if it still doesn't look good it belongs in the trash. As far as the "king's chair"....maybe it looks overwhelming because of where you have it in the room. The focal point of the room is a very large fireplace...so sitting another very large piece in front of it can make it seem that much larger then it actually is. So maybe some furniture placement issues are going on here. If you moved the large chair to the other side of the room, or another corner, I bet the fireplace wouldn't look so overbearing and large. It needs something large opposite of it to counteract it's size. That could be a large cabinet (tv cabinet) or a large chair with a table beside it and some wall art behind it...just something that when you look at it you see the mass of it and it evens out the mass of the brick fireplace.

I have a wrought iron piece that hangs above the fireplace and dark red candles/decor on the mantle. Unfortunately, there are only 2 corners in the room - the other 2 are doorways. The other corner is where our TV is located on a corner unit that is pretty massive and does help to balance out the room. I've been showing his kingship some pictures of chairs with ottomans that are just as comfortable and not nearly as intruding as the recliner, so maybe...just maybe...he'll see the light! and we'll get a deal somewhere! I know Big Lots down here has some pretty interesting stuff. Thank you for the suggestions! I truly appreciate it.

depending on the layout itself, sometimes it works to put furniture out of a corner....in a doorway....really depends on the furniture and the doorway and how intrusive it really is for that place. I tell you what I do...whenever we move (which is OFTEN since we are military) I get graph paper and make a graphed out map of the rooms with their different features. I use one block as 6"...it works best for me that way. Most rooms fit on one sheet of paper..and if they don't I tape them together to fit. I mark out as best I can the doors and windows, etc. Then I measure out the furniture and try to make general sizes for them too and cut them out of other graph paper (sometimes I am creative and color, other times, I don't...lol). Then I can play around with all the furniture I want in any way I want it to see about how it would/could lay out well in the room.

That's a great idea. I think I have some graph paper...so I'm gonna try that!

You could paint your mantle how I just did my bench - you don't have to use black and white, you can use any two colors you like. It would give it a weathered, old look.

I primed the bench - not sure that you'd need to do that though. Then I painted it white (you'd want to paint it whichever color you want showing through.) Once dry I took a candle and rubbed it along all the edges (which is the only place I wanted the white showing through - if you want it showing in other places than rub the candle in those places too!) Then I painted the entire thing black. It needed two coats of black. When that was dry I took sandpaper and rubbed it lightly over the edges, which brushed off the black paint, and made the white paint show through. A tip if you're painting: Put on hand lotion beforehand! It makes the paint come off easier afterwards :)
