I am actually going to do that for Nath too!
At the moment I am picking or thinking of what colours to do in my kitchen, dining. I would love to have a splash of colour but because of one section where we don't have overhead cupboards it could be very difficult to make it straight could look weird too. Can't believe in a few weeks my house will be DIFFERENT!

Ok, here is a picture of my kitchen. With our renos, we are putting in all new flooring. I need to put flooring in the kitchen, which will run into the eating/dining area, and then out to the mudroom. (it doesn't have to be the same in the mudroom, but it would be easier)

Here is the floor I like

We're not sure yet if we can afford it, but I am wondering, is it too dark, too busy... too anything?

Yolanda, I think they would be really lovely colours together, especially if you brought in a bright accent colour in your accessories.

Thanks ladies. We have a few flooring stores to look at, but I'm really liking this one.
I might put real tile in the mudroom, that would be the only difference.

We're looking for hardwood to put in the living room area, but I have no idea what I'm looking for there. I think I want something darker, but I just don't know. That's going to take a little more research. I'm glad I have one thing picked out though!

I think light wood floors would tie in the light wood of the cabinetry well.

I'm just wondering with the back side of the bar, where it's all maple, would it look silly to have the floors the exact same colour, or should they be a little darker, or a lot darker, or the same colour. That's my dilemma mostly.

I wouldn't do the exact same color, but I think the other two would be OK. It looks too matchy- matchy if you do all the same wood. To be pleasing to the eye you need some difference in color and texture. It doesn't have to be drastic, but enough to where it doesn't look like they were having a wood sale and you just bought everything in site to cover the entire area. Or the wooden slime monster slimed you. [;)]

Another option might be to match the wood exactly and then paint the bar back side (and maybe the side, depending on where you stop the flooring) to your wall color. There would be enough distance between your cabinets and the same flooring that way to keep it interesting.

A third option (which might not work if your den area is smaller than I am thinking) is to continue the kitchen flooring behind the bar and have the wood meet it, say, 3 feet from the base of the bar. There are certainally thresholds that would finish off both surfaces nicely where they met.

I can imagine you don't like those ideas very much because I know what response my husband would say to them... and it would all be negative and why we couldn't do each one. [;)] I'll let you know if another idea pops up. [;)]

Oooh, Zippy, I like option 3, I'll have to talk to hubby about that one, it would be a good idea I think. Not sure about the logistics with where the dining area ends and the living room walls start, but I'll look at that option. The den area is certainly big enough to do it, it's 16' by 18' or so...

Painting the wood isn't an option since we spent lots of money to get the maple to do the cabinets and the bar because I love the maple, so I wouldn't want to buy the expensive stuff and then paint over it [:o]

Do you think this color is middle-of-the-road enough? I'd love to go dark, but our furniture is black, and our chair is burgundy, but not sure if the dark floor would be too much?


For our front living room (the room that will be directly in front of the den area) I'm thinking of doing something like this, with wainscoting (not this color on the walls though [sm=icon_smile_yikes.gif]) but I have no idea on color for the walls. The kitchen has a nice rich burgundy and the rest of the house is a neutralish taupey color. Our room is greys and blues, the kid's room is green, my bathroom is aqua. I'm not a fan of browns and yellow and green. So I don't know what to do in the living room. If I do the wainscoting, can I get away with something a little darker on the walls above? Even with black furniture? Oy, I have no idea what to do there.

I'd go darker.

The biggest thing to watch for if you're going to go timber floors is that you keep the yellow tone in the wood. Nothing looks worse than where someone has yellow toned cupboards and a red toned floor or vice versa.

Yes, I really want to avoid reddish hardwood, I really want to keep it in the browns, whether we go light or dark, I don't want it to be red-toned.

I found a great color for the walls in the living room, I just have to run it by hubby... it will be months before we're painting though, I"m just dreaming for now [:)]

What color did you choose for the walls, if dh agrees? I was going to suggest a gold, to carry the red throughout, or get a different shade but same hue of blue that compliments the blues in the room.

I like that floor, and agree that watching the red vs yellow undertone of the wood is super important. I don't think darker would be a bad choice, but I think the one you linked is darker and textured enough to make it look good with your cabinets. The darker you go, the more your black furniture will fade into the background.

If you do go with a change of flooring behind the bar, make sure you go back far enough to where you can move the bar stools without impediment by the threshold.

I have a question...actually a couple of questions. With the sun rising so much earlier with the time change, I am wanting to get shades for the windows in my kids rooms. The problem that I'm facing is that the room that my two boys share has a large window. I talked to another lady who lives in the same community who has the same window to cover. She tried two shades to cover the window and said that it didn't really work because the sun still came in through the edges. So, she suggested getting one to cover the whole thing...but I haven't yet seen one that is 84 inches wide. Anyone know where I can find one approx. that wide?

Also, I saw a home today...the lady that was showing me the home told me that the curtains were all shower curtains. She said they were purchased at the Dollar Store, easy to clean, and no ironing. They were REALLY nice... Have any of you used shower curtains as your window curtains? Would I need to do any altering (besides the length) to make this work?

yes...quite often actually!!! right now the boys room is one...in Germany all of them were shower curtains. I used them there because it was the difference of paying about $50 for curtains per room vs paying $10-12 per room for shower curtains...so I went with the cheaper alternative. It worked well for us there. I think as long as they fit the window it would look fine...and if you wanted them longer (like to the floor if they don't go all the way down), you could sew two together.

on the shade...what kind are you talking about....roll shade? cheap plastic blinds? wooden blinds?
have you thought of doing shutters? (not sure if that would work for your windows, but I have seen them work well in some cases)

Go to a place where you can get a custom order. The sales person can tell you which treatments they sell can be ordered in that size. Most types should be available in that size. You should have many different price points to choose from because of the variety of styles and the variety of qualities companies produce. Sarah, I saw your idea on maybe moving the location of our refrigerator, and thought some more on that, then decided to do it! We didn't like the current location but were having a hard time deciding where it would fit. Anyway, it's going to go to the left of the big window, and we'll add a pantry type thing where it currently sits. [:)]

I am really, really stuck on decor/accessories ideas. I was thinking of going with black appliance covers and a black canister set. (like THESE) But the walls are going to be sage green so I wanted to do curtains and rugs that would tie in somehow with the sage. Would that look ok? We can't replace the appliances so they will stay off white. Is that too many different colors?

that sounds like a great idea!!!! (I personally would do a counter and cabinets around/beside the stove...but I like to have room right there to work.)


that canister set looks nifty!!! I have never seen one with the tiny one included too!!

Thanks! [:)] I think I'll really like that arrangement too. We're going to make that island shorter so we don't lose doorway space too.
I thought those canisters were nifty too!! I just happened to run across them when looking for stuff. I love the itty bitty one. [:D] And that set is cheaper than any others I found that only had 4 canisters instead of 7.
