ok...got most of the bathroom done (except what is waiting on Paul to take that cabinet down, then I will paint there...and the trim after that too). Some of the pics are dark cause three of the four lights are out in there....

ETA another pic.....HERE is a pic of the accent stuff we got to go in there. Hard to tell in the pics, but in person it looks very VERY nice.

LOL...me too!!!!! It's my favorite color to decorate with!!!!
Hey Kim I was thinking today when I was painting my very small bathroom, that I was very grateful for my not so tall ceilings....unlike your house. If y'all ever decide to paint you are either going to have to rent or buy scaffolding or hire people to do it!!!!

(I added another pic to my post above with the pics in it)

nicole6598 -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (2/2/2008 11:16:38 PM)

it looks lovely Sarah!! Job well done!!

Yeah Kim has got huge ceilings!! We have high ceilings here (most houses before the 60's had high ceilings) but with a long arm roller hubby could do the ceiling and if he climbed up to almost top rung he could do the cornices we have (luckily hubby is 6ft tall!!)

peculiar_lady2 -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (2/3/2008 12:47:39 AM)

the house my parents bought when I was in the 7th grade had very high ceilings too...12 ft ceilings. I loved that house!!! It was very old though and really needed lots of work since my parents divorce...when my mom left. It was built in the 1890's and was one of the oldest houses in town. It was built by a guy who owned a lumber company so it is very sturdy. When my dad tried to knock a hole in a wall for a door to go through to one room he found out how thick it was built!!! A full 8-10 inches thick in most places!!!!

HisCovenant -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (2/4/2008 9:42:57 AM)

Nicole- Your frames and vases are beautiful!

Sarah- our master bathroom is a similar brown color (Grandma's Fudge by Martin Senor) and I just love it. We have blue & white with ours, but I like the red and gold with it, too. Great choice!

peculiar_lady2 -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (2/4/2008 9:52:00 AM)

I started painting the cabinets in the kitchen yesterday....mostly the top ones. Hubby took the doors off so I can get them painted without having to tape off anything (plus I hate the look of cabinets that are painted without the hinges being taken off...looks tacky to me). It's going to take at least three coats of white over that wood (probably should have used primer, but oh well, hubby didn't get that, he just got paint...we have an older can from the previous people that owned the house that I can use as a base primer coat on the paneling on the lower walls). So, depending on how I feel today I may get outside and get the door hinges off and paint the top cabinet doors that he took off...weather depending. We are going to get new handles in black and paint the hinges black...so it will be a totally different look!!! Just with the minor amount that is up there now it looks so much brighter in there this morning!!!! I am sure it will be a few weeks before it is totally done, but I am so excited that we could finally get started on it!!!

All day yesterday hubby was cracking me up...every time he walked past the bathroom he would step inside it then come out and make a comment to me about how nice and pretty it looks....lol. He is such a goof ball!!!

Mrs.Wifey -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (2/4/2008 10:00:05 AM)

Alright, here are some pictures of our humble little abode[;)]

Fireplace and Mantle

Sliding Glass Door(my mom made the valance)

Couch

TV(this is actually moving to our room and being replaced by a computer armoire)

The "ugly" chair that Micah hates[8D]

Dining room(that table is moving out and getting replaced this week)

Kitchen #1

Kitchen #2

I have held off on decorating for the past 2 years because we keep talking about buying a house but it's looking like that isn't going to happen for another year so now I'm trying to figure out what I want to do. I have a large beveled mirror(kinda like that) to hang over the fireplace, I just have to get around to it, lol.

If your white is oil based and the cabinets are clean, you probably won't have any problems. If your cabinets are clean and the lumber was dried properly (if they are new) or painted with water-based paint previously (if they are existing,) you won't have trouble with water-based. The main reason for priming wood is to keep the sap and oils naturally occurring in wood from telescoping through or to neutralize the color with a cheaper product (primer costs less than paint.)

HisCovenant -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (2/4/2008 12:18:20 PM)

Ryanne- I love your TV stand! Our dining room in our apartment looked just like your, with the table and microwave stand. It took me back to some good memories.

they are clean and dry wood cabinets...the original from when the house was built in the 1950's. It's taking pretty good...considering. They are just very dark wood so that's why it will take a few coats to cover well....cause I want them white.
Another reason for priming (on unfinished wood) is because it then lifts the fibers of the wood and seals it so that it can be sanded smoothly...primer isn't as "wet" as regular paint, so if you use just regular paint on something (without sanding the bottom coat) it won't feel very smooth. Primer makes it smooth without (mostly) having to sand again.
Ours is all finished wood though....some paneling and some old cabinets...they don't have a thick layer of varnish on them though so I can easily paint over them without sanding or primer.

nicole6598 -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (2/4/2008 3:00:39 PM)

Ryanne do you own that apartment? Is it 1 or 2 bedroom?

Sarah you are a champ doing all that, can't wait to see pics of it.

Thanks Hiscovenant :)

Thanks for the education! I didn't realize that.

LOL! That's one reason why our 'formal rooms' aren't painted! Joel doesn't want to rent the scaffolding nor hire someone! [8D]

clag4christ -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (2/4/2008 4:23:30 PM)

All right...here's pictures of what our house looks like with our stuff in it, lol!

Front door with my curtains

MamaMilty -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (2/4/2008 4:49:39 PM)

Sarah, your bathroom is so elegant! I love the accessories you picked. Your hubby is so cute, the way he adores and appreciates you.

Ryanne, I like your "ugly" chair [:D] and the mirror will look nice over your mantle.

Kim, everything is looking great! Your entertainment unit is very pretty.

Nicole, love your vases & frame, so sophisticated.

I love this thread! Its like inviting each other into our homes, thanks for your hospitality!!

nicole6598 -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (2/4/2008 4:52:04 PM)

looks great !! love the ent centre!

Nicole_Michelle -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (2/4/2008 5:01:15 PM)

Sarah, your bathroom is awesomely fantastic! [:D] I want our new bathroom to look just like that!

You ladies all have such nice places. I love how you all decorate! I also love seeing brick homes.

clag4christ -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (2/4/2008 5:03:35 PM)

I forgot to mention! Ryanne I LOVE your ugly chair! That one's similar to ones my Gram had that I adored and wanted but didn't get after she died. [&o] No idea where they went to.

Thanks for the compliments ladies! [:D]

**I didn't realize that my kitties were making cameos in those photos, lol!**

nicole6598 -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (2/4/2008 5:09:29 PM)

yeah i like the "ugly" chair too!!!

what do u mean by brick home nicole? u live in plastic one?[:D]

Nicole_Michelle -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (2/4/2008 5:17:17 PM)

LOL yes, I live in a plactic home. It gets VERY sweaty in here in the Summer. [8D][:D]

I just like brick homes. Most homes here have siding or stucco on the outside. I think brick homes are the prettiest! And they are better insulation. If we could afford a brick home we would get one right away!

Clag, when I took pictures of our last home my pets were pretty much in every picture! [:D] They followed me around trying to figure out what I was doing.

We've got a 'brick home' here in TX. In CA they were all stucco...you can't do brick there because of the earth quakes.

My cats were just lazing about but apparently two of them snuck in to the pictures! Aren't pets just too funny?!

nicole6598 -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (2/4/2008 5:26:51 PM)

what is stucco?
we have a fibre thingy house, but it has fake brick cladding all around, it gets hot in summer, cold in winter!! I wish we had a brick home too. You can also hear everything!! Could get embarrassing later on when kids are older [;)]
