Sorry, I should have said "Tampa Bay" sports. With the Bucs in Tampa and the Rays in St. Pete.

If the Rays move to the proposed new ballpark in Tampa will you be very disappointed? Not to worry now, looks like it won't happen for a while. Other than the idea the new park is supposed to be beautiful I have no preference on the Rays moving. I do live much closer to Tampa than St. Pete but don't go to games.

Yankee Nut -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (10/20/2008 11:09:21 PM)

Congrads to the Rays and Phiilies and all thier fans of makeing the Series. Should be an interesting one.

Yankee Nut -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (10/26/2008 9:47:37 PM)

What an end of game 4 last night. Had to work last night so missed most of it but saw the end. Watching Game 4 Right now and it looks interesting.

iwillfearnoevil -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (10/27/2008 10:43:13 AM)

as a yankee fan, i can't seem to say i mind the AL losing as tampa views the yankees as their #1 rival ...

was just looking that the ratings ... this might be the least watched World Series ever ...

3tulips -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (10/27/2008 7:08:58 PM)

I think the Phillies will wrap it up tonight. I am happy for them. To do that in their home stadium is great.

uncabeeil -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (10/28/2008 8:55:56 AM)

Well, they came close. I don't think they should have played the 6th inning at all. Wouldn't it make sense if the Commissioner just halted play until it could be resumed under better conditions? I mean, this is for all the marbles, doncha think special allowances could be made? Either suspend it at the end of 5, and pick it up the next day or just call it a non-game and start from scratch.

iwillfearnoevil -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (10/28/2008 9:03:18 AM)

well now we know they shouldn't have started the game at the start time ... the announcers said it limited the rays speed on the basepaths but also allowed them to score ... the pitchers couldn't grip the ball to even attempt a curveball or specialty pitch ... doesn't seem like how one would want the world series played ... as soon as rollins had trouble with that fly in the 4th, should have been enough to call it a night ...

Yankee Nut -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (10/28/2008 7:59:17 PM)

Should be interesting to see who wins tonight. Hopeing for a Phillies win.

hemidart -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (10/28/2008 11:05:44 PM)

I live in the cold Maritimes next to Maine, USA--anyone got a free house down south? Anyway I also believe the game should have been called early. They KNEW the weather report was continued rain. Also, it was cold, windy & that should have been the fair & deciding 3 factors--because it was affecting everyone's performance. I feel there was external pressure from some "big shots" with much $$$ to finish it that night. Also--the umps[8|] MANY blown calls--they need to use replays for about everything--except strikes & balls. (I'll get some opposition here). Nite[:@][&o]

uncabeeil -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (10/29/2008 8:51:10 AM)

[rant]They don't need instant replay at all. What they need is someone with the guts to lay it on the line for the umpires once and for all. They need to be told they aren't the stars of the game and never will be. They signed up for what is supposed an invisible supporting role and that's what they should accept. There's a set strike zone, and a set of rules that served very well for a hundred and fifty years. Learn them, enforce them, and leave your personality and visions of fame at home. You wanna be famous? Go to Hollywood or learn how to play the game at a level that warrants fame. Otherwise, shutup and do the job you're being paid to do.[/rant]

iwillfearnoevil -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (10/29/2008 9:55:10 AM)

agree about showboating umpires and there may be a set strike zone but i don't know when the last time it was called properly ... there have been lots of blown calls going both directions ... oh well

Rufas2000 -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (10/29/2008 10:50:59 PM)

Phiillies won the three day World Series game. Congrats.

No jokes about Philly fans tonight (a few bad aples comes to mind). They get the spoils.

Phillies rule the world! And only Jesus saves more than Brad Lidge; did you know he's a believer?

iwillfearnoevil -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (10/30/2008 9:49:20 AM)

windows were smashed at a bank and luggage store in the downtown shopping district ...
cars overturned ...
dozens of huge streetside planters flipped over ...
bus shelters damaged or destroyed ...
traffic signal pole was taken down and fans were setting off firecrackers ...
Fans also set small fires and smashed beer bottles. One group set a dumpster on fire and surrounded the noxious-smelling blaze ...
surrounded a KYW-TV van while a reporter was doing a live shot, breaking its windows and rocking the vehicle but luckily the police were nearby ...
trail of broken bottles, overturned garbage bins and piles of other trash on the streets ...

Not until last night. Pretty cool that the first thing he said was thanking God.

How's random destruction fun? We won, let's burn down the city!! Woo hoo! [8|]

As long as they don't torch the city, I could symphatize considering the Phillies haven't won a WS since the tail end of the Jimmy Carter days, as well as the first championship of ANY sort since Dr. J and the Sixers 25 years ago.

Ah, what Mitch Williams must feel like right now.

Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey: "It's OK. It's all right. People are having fun"

Yeah, there are some downright stupid people in this city. Ramsey's got his work cut out for him. The crime got way out of hand while John Street was mayor and his commissioner seemed pretty lax. Ramsey was appointed by the current Mayor Michael Nutter who is fantastic. Ramsey had a reputation of being no nonsense as a commissioner in DC. That statement by him above however, was just stupid. Mayor Nutter had the best line however, "You Can Be Joyous; You Cannot Be A Jackass"
