who do you feel is the best pure bass singers? currently singing.

not the one's that sound like a chainsaw backfiring either.((I love the deep growling bass but have heard a few of them that could get low but not carry the workload of solid 4-part harmony)) I am wondering on the best pure sound. in other word's, one's that can truly carry a tune.


after listening last year or so to a lot of solid SG, I think the two for me is

Eric Bennett of TQ and Glenn Dustin of L5. them boys can flat out sing.

Jeff Chapman of Kingdom Heirs is close and if could figure out which sings bass for Called Out Quartet would name his name. but he is my other one.

love to hear your thoughts.

will have to add the one from The Perry's. ((his name slips my mind but think is Tracy Stuffle)) he can sing and I love to hear his songs

Eric's voice is great. We went to the same high school. If anyone cares.
Ian Owens is, to me, the top. I sing with him all the time and I watch audiences all over the nation fall in love with his voice.

No, no, no, no! I said I went to the same high school he did. Our school had the high school and junior high together. He actually graduated 6 years before me!

TQFan, by the criteria in your first post, I'd have to name Randy Byrd. Just hearing the term "pure tone" brings his voice to mind.

He's one of several favorites, since I like the vocal fry-style basses too (such as Christian Davis, Jeff Chapman, etc.) Tracy Stuffle can do the vocal fry stuff (and do it well!) but typically doesn't.

I agree with IMPST. Ian Owen is one of the best bass singers out there today. And he is so young. He will only get better IMHO.

My choice would have to be Jeff Chapman. He can drag the bottom as good as anyone but my favorite song with him is "The Day Before He Saved Me". He doesn't really go to the lowest extremes of his voice in this one but sounds really smooth. IMHO.

One song where he rocks that lower end is "Good News From The Graveyard". That's some great bass sangin' right there! [:D]

BRBB is too modest about his bass singing ability. He'd do a great job on this song.

I am not totally sure of your definition of pure, but if you are meaning smooth, and on pitch with the low harmony part, Ed O'Neal has been doing it right for years, as has Gerald Williams. I have not heard Burman Porter recently, but he was right on in the early Dove Bros. projects.
I hope this thread does not get totally off-track, like the one about lowest bass singers that I started did. It turned in to many folks picking their favorite, not necessarily the lowest.

I agree with the poster about Ed O'neal. He has a very pleasing bass voice. Another one is David Hester.

I'd say the ones listed here are great, but I'd like to add the name of Will Lane. An outstanding bass singer and he's gonna get better. He's only 25.

Sounds like IMPST doesn't want to get too old too fast. :+)
I have to agree. Ian has the clearest bass voice I've heard in a long time.
He has a personality to match. Clear and pure and slightly crazy.

These guys are all great singers, but my list is headed by a couple that haven't been mentioned much--Glenn Dustin and Tim Duncan, followed closely by Jeff Chapman, Mike Holcomb, & Tracy Stuffle.

Harold Gilley!!! No question. He can sing it high or he can sing it low. He could imitate any bass singer that was out there singing and sound just like them, J D, Big chief, George Younce, but when he sang like Harold Gilley he was better than any of them. He had a much smoother voice than J D until he got to the bottom of his range. TOO bad I think he is totally inactive now. Smoothest bass singer anywhere in his range was Armond Morales. I never heard him sing out of his range. Problem was after the Imperials went contemporary (after Jake Hess) you could never hear the bass singer anyway!

George was the best pure singer as a bass IMO.

Today it would be hard for me to say. A lot of guys tend to swallow their tone in an attempt to sound like they have a bigger and deeper voice than they do. All of that aside, I'd say Jeff Chapman is probably one of my favorites for pure singing as a bass.
