Hey James

Today, Kristen and I were in a clothing store in town and someone was in there with a teeny little baby. She had to have been less than 2 weeks old. The baby was already crying pretty hard when we got in there and the mother was jostling her around trying to get her to stop. I could tell it was a "feed me" cry and I kept wondering why she didn't stop what she was doing and feed that baby. Finally a sales clerk asked her if the baby was okay and the mother said "oh, she's just hungry...it's way past her feeding time", then turned back to her casual shopping like she had all the time in the world. I was stunned! You don't do that when a baby needs to be fed! The sales clerk offered to give her a dressing room to feed the baby in and the mom said no thanks, she'd be taking her home as soon as she finished up. That went in for about another 15 minutes, with the mother passing her around to her two other children so she could finish shopping. All the while that baby was screaming her little lungs out. I finally couldn't keep my mouth closed any longer (imagine that) and walked over and asked her if shopping was really more important than her newborn getting fed. She just looked at me, then asked the sales lady if she could have a dressing room. Amazing that a stranger had to point out to her that she was being selfish.

Ohmyword, Karlie. That poor baby! Way to teach the child his/her needs will be met, huh?

LOL!

Karlie . . . someone asked me the other day how long I had been wearing Birks, and when I replied, "30 years", they said, "Wow! You were wearing Birks before they were even cool!"

I immediately thought of you making all kinds of Calvin (Calvin & Hobbes) faces behind my back.

I saw some pink floral Birks I thought about buying. I only have one pair, a bright grass green. :)

They have already come and gone. The humidity is gone and the temp is about 77; it's very pleasant. I better go out there and do something.

It was gorgeous here too, dewpoint only 53 and the high was only 81. What a difference a day makes.

That is just awful. Does it get that hot every summer?

I hate to go shopping. I do like catalog and online shopping though.

My hero! Good for you.

One time at Hancock Fabrics there was a mom who just harassed some little boy till I wanted to say something, but I didn't. He couldn't have been more than 4 and while she looked at fabric he'd sit down on the floor, he'd be right by her but she still got annoyed by it. I could not see one thing he was doing wrong. I wish I would have asked her to let him sit by me and look at patterns while she shopped. Sometimes I wonder how he grew up, you know? If he was ok or if he had a broken spirit.

My wife and I are glad to live out of the big city as well. I really like the wide open spaces, and the peace and quiet.

You, Karlie and I should get together and go shopping . . . sounds like all 3 of us have similar, uhm, tolerance levels for that kind of stuff.

Sounds like a plan. If only the geographic differences weren't quite so much... And I HATE DESPISE DETEST cities and subrurbs, so I vote y'all come here. Round about...oh, September/October, the weather here is perfect. We can go for a hayride, pick fresh NY apples, enjoy the beautiful fall leaves...and I might even let you hold my new little one.

Awww, thanks I usually mind my own business with strangers, but I can't abide people mistreating kids.

Oh yea...for at least a few days. Our usual summer temps for July and August are between 103-108(100 is considered pretty cool this time of year), but we always have heatwaves where it'll hit 110 and above for several days. One year, we had a two week stretch where it was between 113-117 every single day. I about died!

I wonder things like that too, especially with our camp kids that I never see again. I always wonder if something we said gave them some hope, or if they went right back into situations that killed all spark of that.

Karlie, if I may . . .

Neglected and/or abused kids can live on even the faintest of spark, and no matter how much that spark may get "covered over", it doesn't go out.

Even today, I have very vivid memories of people who dramatically impacted my life for the positive when I was going through all that ick and yuck . . . even if the "spark" was truly only a fleeting moment in time.

God Bless you abundantly for what you do with your camp kids. I firmly believe that you have impacted their lives in a HUGE and wonderful way. I also firmly believe that even if they go back into horrendous stuff, they most certainly do remember the love that you and others poured into them during their time at camp. It shapes and molds their lives . . . and for the better.

With everything I have, I believe that.

Well, for my wife and me the problem is often the other way round; in winter there is so much snow that we want to warm up.

Last year we went down to Myrtle Beach and soaked up a bit of warmth.

Thanks for that, Shar Mar I do believe that too...it's what keeps us going.

One of our little girls has been on my heart so much since camp ended. It's been a little hard to talk about so I haven't. We did a song in chapel called "He Knows My Name" and one day, she told me she didn't like that that song because it made her sad. I asked why it made her sad and she said because of the part that says "He sees each tear that falls and he hears me when I call" She looked right at me and said "He might hear everyone else but not me, because I pray and pray and nothing ever gets better" It broke my heart. How can you explain to a child who has gone through what she has that God does hear her cries. It certainly doesn't seem like it from her point of view. I tried to explain to her that sometimes we have to wait for God's timing and that we have to trust that He is with us no matter what and taking care of us in ways we can't always see. She gave me a look I won't ever forget....it wasn't one of hope, but of doubt and despair. I've thought about her and prayed desperately for her the last month...that God will make his presence so real to her and that He will fan any little spark of hope she took back with her.

Oh {{{Karlie}}}.

If you feel led, would you please PM me her name; I'd like to add her to my prayer list.

And if you don't feel comfortable doing so, that's ok, because Abba will know who I'm talking about.

I love that song. And that little girl sounds a lot like me as a child. I will pray for her too.

Thanks guys, for the prayers and hugs. I was having a hard day yesterday with everything, so she was very much on my mind.

I did the girl thing and went shopping today. Like I won't get enough of that in Ga with Britt. Oy. But, I needed some things for the trip(nope...no shoes!) and decided to not wait til the last minute.

Something interesting happened today at the post office. I was waiting for my number to be called and the place was packed. A very elderly woman came in with a cane and she was pretty stopped over. I was standing close to the door when she came in and noticed how feeble she looked. I watched her look over at the benches, which were packed with at least 20 people, all under the age of 40 or so(many kids and a few teenagers) and not a single person stood up and offered this woman a seat I watched everyone sitting there glance up and see her walk in and not a single able-bodied person offered her their seat or made their child get up so she could sit. I felt like I was in the twilight zone. Have manners really changed all that much?? My parents would have had us strung up for showing such disrespect and lack of compassion, and I raised my kids the same. There was a young man about 20 or so sitting closest to where I was standing, and I asked him if he would mind letting the woman have his seat(I can't seem to keep my mouth closed when I shop, apparently), and he just looked at me, then at her then got up like it was killing him. She thanked him and sat down. In a few minutes she got my attention and tried to offer me money "for my trouble"! Can you imagine what she deals with on a daily basis for her to think that polite behavior needs to be rewarded with anything other than a thank you? I told her it was no trouble at all and that I couldn't take her money. She looked relieved and put it away and thanked me again for "noticing her". Wow...what a world we live in.

Karlie . . . that brought tears to my eyes; especially when I read that she thought she had to pay you for that.

God bless her, abundantly.

And God bless you as well . . . and I'm personally glad that you don't keep your mouth shut while shopping!

This cracked me up. I can't even imagine having to wait at our PO! LOL They really have you take a number? Bizarre...

I'm glad you can't keep silent either! Good grief! Even in my huge pregnant state, I would have gotten up and let the lady have MY seat!

We might get in some trouble together when you come up here for our little September get-together. I once confronted a man in the Walmart parking lot when he pulled in chugging an alcoholic beverage, and THEN his wife/gf and three little kids piled out of the car. My sister was with me and she was sure he was going to hit me. My only regret was that I didn't call the police first because the jerk got rid of the evidence and by the time the police were there, they could only embarrass him (made him do all the drunk tests right in front of Walmart ). Life as me is never boring, so I'm sure SharMar, you, and I will find some trouble where ever we go...LOL!
