Stubborn belly fat.

How do you get rid of it.

I'm eating healthy, working out faithfully and it seems everything is going down but my stomach. How do I tackle belly fat at the same time?

Do you do stomach crunches? You would need to do a lot of them though

I do but I was only doing about 2 to 3 times a week. I commited to do them everyday. I have been for about a week. The twice a week I take a 15 min ab class. We do a lot in that 15 minutes.

Like how many do I need to do. Is there anything else I can do to help while doing crunches/sit ups?

Not being unrealistic I did have a baby 8 months ago. But my stomach was bigger before I got pregnant. But does that make it even harder to lose? I'm not not for extremely fast results just want it to be more balanced.

Sit ups and a low fat diet will help you reduce fat. I can drop weight quicker if I eat between 10%-15% fat in my overall diet. Plus, increasing muscle tone.

If you go to www.sparkpeople.com, you will find a lot of exercises to tone your abs. I do the crunches and crunches with twist.

Tomorrow is official weigh-in day, but I have a feeling that the scale will probably give me good news, based on what it showed me today. I guess I'll find out tomorrow if my current eating plan is working, otherwise I might need to change it.

Your body decides how to lose weight. You can't target an area to lose fat from. If you keep up the good work, your body at some point will decide to shed the belly fat- but it may be last.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't do crunches- any exercise you do will help the fat to come off. And doing crunches will reshape the muscles so that the fat lays differently on top and so that when the fat is gone your abs will be georgeous.

Just keep plugging away and you will reach your goal.

I wonder how much belly fat you are talking about... women are supposed to have some belly flesh ~ it protects their reproductive organs and (when they are pregnant) their unborn baby. Yes there are many images of women who don't have an oz of belly fat (or other fat) on their bodies, but this doesn't mean they are healthy.

Added to which, if you've lost a lot of weight (or had children) you may have stretched your muscles and they may never ben as flat and as firm as you would wish ~ giving the appearance of belly fat.

Do keep up with the exercises and the dieting so that you are healthy and in the best shape that you can be in.

Today is my official weigh in day. I got on the scale this morning and it said...

200 lbs!!!

That's a total of 100 lbs lost since December 2005 or

115 lbs since my heaviest weight of 315 lbs, whenever that was.

Praise the Lord!

Now I'm going to eat a large hot fudge brownie sundae with chocolate chip ice cream, whipped cream, nuts and of course, a cherry on top!

(Just kidding)

Woo hoo Melissa, that's over-the-top awesome!!!!

After 8 months of changing my lifestyle, I think that I've now broken that stubborn plateau and am back to s-l-o-w-l-y losing weight. Increasing my calories to match my increased exercise seems to have done the trick nicely. Anyway, as of this morning's weigh-in, I can happily report that I've lost 95.2 pounds!

April 22 is my 8-month-anniversary of EATING TO LIVE!

Last August, my health was in shambles and I was rapidly become mobility impaired ... my knees were giving out, I was always out of breath, and my diabetic neuropathy made even standing painful. My cholesterol was too high, my blood pressure was too high, and my blood sugars were too high. And I was taking 4 insulin shots a day and my diabetes STILL wasn't controlled.

After much prayer and thought, I decided to reclaim my life. I realized that atrocious eating habits had got me to where I was, and that I had the ability to change. So OUT went all the junk food and garbage, and I started reading labels and buying HEALTHY food that would NOURISH my body properly. Whole grains. Lean proteins. Fresh veggies. More veggies. I started counting calories and learning about nutrition and measuring portions. And we made eating out more of a "special occasion" thing and less of an "every night" thing.

8 MONTHS OF HEALTHY EATING
95.2 POUNDS LOST
BLOOD PRESSURE: NORMAL
CHOLESTEROL: NORMAL
DIABETES: CONTROLLED
AND I AM OFF INSULIN! (WOOOooo HOOOooo!)
ENERGY LEVEL: HIGH
EXCERCISE: SIX DAYS PER WEEK
CHINS LOST: TWO
SIZES LOST: FIVE

Of course, my weight loss is much, much slower these days .... but that's ok. I am trusting God, and trusting that I am eating healthy. And if I can lose about a pound or so a week, I will count it as good, ya know?

What's your story? (And how can we encourage you?)

WOW! Those are some GREAT reports! Congrats!

I was very pleased at our weigh in. I've lost over 6% body fat in three months. I need to lose 9% more to be 'good', ratio wise.

Congrats Harvie & Diane! With more sunny, warmer days, it's easier to get out and walk. Sure beats walking on a treadmill in a gym, which I leave open for rainy days.

Well, I got on my scales today and I haven't lost any weight ~ but I haven't gained any either . I had a routine blood test last month which covered my thyroid function and it wasn't particularly happy, and I suspect, still isn't. I will be retested early June to see how things are. I'm feeling pretty tired most of the time though so just making sure I get lots of rest and some good food.

CARDIO!!!! Just do it!

Weight training does of course help, and if you're going to do both weights and cardio on the same day, make sure you do cardio AFTER weights.

In addition, break up your meals. Rather than the traditional breakfast-lunch-dinner, eat 5-6 times a day. Smaller meals separated 2-3 hours each. There are many websites which show how each person may tailor his/her diet depending on his/her health/weight loss goals.

This has worked for me - I've lost nearly 10 pounds in about 30 days. My fat loss has somewhat slowed, but I'm not going to stop until I am below 10% body fat (I'm around 15% now, down from a whopping 30% five years ago).

A word about carbs: the whiter the carb the worse it is. I dont' remember exactly how, related to how the human body processes carbs/insulin, but the whiter the carb (white rice, white potatoes, white breads, pasta), the faster it is stored as fat. Stick to whole grain (not whole wheat) bread and brown rice. And try to buy whole grain bread without high fructose corn syrup. In fact, avoid high fructose corn syrup or any corn syrup if you can.

Replace butter and olive oil with fat-free cooking sprays, and save olive oil only for the salads, and use sparingly.

Eat lots of fruit, but stay away from juice and other fruit beverages as they are pretty much sugar punches.

Stay away from sugars, soda, candy, chips (Dorito's and other oily, salty snacks), muffins, bagels, cake, pie, fast food, pizza (OK not the worst thing to eat but still greasy).

Cut down on red meats and all other meats: trim the fat from pork chops, chicken breasts, veal cutlets, and steaks if you do have them. Go for the less marbled steaks. Chicken breasts are the better choices (along with fish) as they are high in protein and low in fat.

Don't eat egg yolks, but take advantage of egg whites as they are a source of clean and quick protein.

And again: CARDIO CARDIO CARDIO! I cannot emphasize this sufficiently.

Proper eating habits + sufficient cardio (and weight training if you wish to add mass or tone up a bit) = WEIGHT LOSS!!!!!

Just do it! I did it and so can you!!!!

I thought that a man was supposed to have 10-20% body fat (dropping to 6-10% for athletes). You may want to check to make sure what you're aiming for is healthy ~ kinda pointless losing weight and body fat to avoid some health problems to end up with a whole bunch of other ones.

Apparently Rich thinks we should be doing MORE cardio than we already are... lol!

Rich, I really don't think I can bike more than two hours a day!!!!

Brown rice? No way, Jose ... I gave up brown rice for quinoa and bulgur MONTHS ago ... lower carb, higher protein, better tasting... lol!

Chicken breast? Well, sure, once in a while ... but we've switched to ostrich! (Much leaner!)

Fruits? Waaaaaay tooooo much sugar for me, most of the time. I get one apple a day, and that is it. The rest of my daily servings are all veggies, the greener the better!

:: giggles :::

My neuropathy is still a problem ... some days it is excruciatingly painful to stand (much less walk!) .... but I that doesn't keep me from biking, most days. The biggest problem is that both my hands hurt and I don't have a lot of grip strength.... thanks to the neuropathy and bilateral carpal tunnel! (Hmmmm... there goes my career dream of being a boxer, huh?)

As a word of encouragement, I want to let you know that my diabetic father no longer suffers from neuropathy after getting his diet and med under control for several years. He also had/has the effects of a condition called cerebral vasculitis that could have affected it... but the doctors think it was his diet and proper meds that helped his neuropathy. You also are probably aware that there are special (expensive) shoes that can help?

Yay ... today is the day my delivery of low carb (10g) high fiber (9g), high protein (18g) multigrain bagels arrive. I ordered 7 bags for me, 1 bag for my friend Nancy, 2 bags for my friend Diana, and 2 bags for my friend Susan. Hee hee hee .... I feel like a "bagel dealer!"

I've decided to take 7 little ziploc baggies of Fiber One cereal with me on the cruise ... that way I know that at least PART of my breakfast is healthy and high fiber (29g) .... and I can feel better about eating what's available the rest of the time.

I ate an entire bag of tortilla chips today, among other things.

My first binge in 8 months.

And I have sky-high blood sugars to show for it.

I haven't counted calories in 3 days.

I know that my depression and anxiety are returning, and that scares me.

I did some deployment-related shopping today and bought my wonderful DH 2 sets of cotton sheets, a cotton blanket, a pillow and cotton towels. (They have to take their own stuff... purchased at their own expense.) I tried to find a small air filter, but no luck yet.... I will try again tomorrow. I also stocked up on Breathe Right strips and floss picks and vitamins and dark chocolate and beef jerky ... "the basics" .... to take with him.

We have some brown spots in the back yard lawn. So after work he adjusted the timers UP on the sprinklers, since the weather here will warm up very soon, and the grass will need more water. I'd spent 40 minutes trying to do it, without success.

Tomorrow after work he's going to show me how to operate the gas barbecue (it's new) and how to change the propane tank .... since I don't know how to use it. Barbecuing is "his thing," after all.

I miss him already, and he's not even gone. Already he is distracted and very busy and getting tense .... focusing on all he needs to get done to get ready, and has only a few weeks to get it all done.

It's going to be a long summer.

So these and these potatoes will be pretty much ok to eat?

Very often, it is not that we are eating certain foods, it is the amount of some foods that we eat and the type of that food that's the problem.

Some wholewheat bread, pasta, rice, etc isn't bad for you (just as some white foods aren't) but eating too much of them (be it white or wholewheat) is going to cause a problem.

Meals should be a good mix/balance of food types.

So, back from our holiday to DisneyWorld - it was fantastic! And, I even managed to lose almost 2 lbs that week. I guess all the walking we did overshadowed all the bad food I ate - pizza, pizza and more pizza.
