(((melissa))) Sometimes having a cheat day can help you put some things in perspective. I remember after I stopped eating so much sugar that one day I had a coke and candy bar at the same time (maybe 1 month into eating well) and almost made myself sick. It was so gross. It was so bad that I remember the exact feeling and type of candy bar it was 8 years later!! All I could taste was sugar... the flavors of the nuts and chocolate weren't enhanced by the sugar, but were covered up by the sugar. It was a huge lesson for me in moderation and in seeing that my tastes had changed. Although you can see from the preceeding yogurt combo that I am still not perfect in the sugar department, I learned that it was better for me to have 1 square of 77% dark chocolate that I could savor. The flavor was better, one square was less cals, carbs, and sugar... for me, it was such a better choice.

How is everyone else doing with their professed goals?

Should we have some sort of regular update for everyone to help us hold each other accountable? I'll give an updat in a post in just a minute.

Holy Smokes about the yogurt sugar!

Yogurt at least has some vitamins and minerals. Not sure if Snickers has any.

I try to stay away from sugar. Had 2 scoops of sugar free ice cream last night from Baskin Robbins. That was still very high in carbs. It was also a lot of calories I am sure.

But man that was good.

For the past two weeks, my cal average has been 1452/day which is a touch higher than my goal. I got sick (sinus infection with a sore throat) and had a lot of honey, had several times where I ate white flour instead of it's whole grain counterpart, and you all know about the yogurt that wasn't the best choice. I am still up 1 lb, but have lost the TOM weight. Although I wish I lost weight easily, I am not as frustrated as I was earlier in the week.

So, I still didn't meet my goals, but am still plugging away.

I'm getting a little frustrated. No change on the weight yet. Still exercising 6 days/week.

Anyone know if the strict phase of the South Beach Diet would be ok for a nursing mama to do for 3 days (not the full 2 weeks)?

Chocolate yogurt!?!? It just seems ..... weird.
I agree, it does sound weird... but chilli chocolate sounds weird to many and that's pretty good.

HisCovenant, I wouldn't worry about the nutritional values too much as you don't intend to have it every day. Knowing there is something that you enjoy and can have for 'special' occassions is always good!

I'm sure there are many who would say it was fine. Unless there are medical conditions that require someone do this I have problems with the terms 'strict phase' (meaning 'strict diet' in this case) and 'nursing mothers'. I don't believe nursing mothers should eat anything and everything they want, but I would prefer they stopped worrying about how fast they can get their weight down.

I have my up-days and down-days. This afternoon, I'm not feeling well, so my co-worker treated me to our favorite Mexican place, so today was a down-day.

My mom has now put me on a strict diet!! I need to lose 10 pounds in a month!

I agree, the chocolate yogurt sounds weird. I much prefer the yogurt with fruit on the bottom. Nice snack, but loaded with sugar, so I don't have it very often.

This happens to me, too. I can't have sugar like I used to or my sugar will spike and I'll feel sick the rest of the day. I do like some of the sugar-free candy that's out today -- it's a good substitute as long as I don't have more than one piece every couple of days. Y'know, I was surprised to find that I liked the 70% chocolate. Still has a lot of sugar, but it actually has a better taste than other chocolates I've tasted.

That's going some... is there any particular reason why?

Like you and grace, I am the same. I never drank coke but there are a lot of sweet things that simply don't appeal to me any more and even when I eat them, they leave me feeling as though I haven't had anything nice

My weight loss continues ... slowly but surely. (With the emphasis on SLOWLY!) Anyway, as of this morning, I've lost 89 pounds.

I'm doing okay, but need to do better. Since last Thursday, with the exception of the last two days, I've kept my carbs under 125 and my calories under 1550. The last two days I've been having carb urgings and still having them today, but I have them under better control. I hope that I can keep them under control, because it's the carbs that make me fat, so I need to limit them as much as possible.

As for exercise, I walked about 1/4 mile around a parking lot and also 1/2 mile on the treadmill in 20 minutes. I'm doing some of my resistance exercises too. I went shopping for new clothes yesterday and want to continue wearing them until they get too big for me. That would be a good thing.

I agree with the accountability thing, it would help us keep each other on our toes and to offer support and encouragement to each other. We need to be accountable to others and ourselves in order to sucessfully live all parts of the Christian life, including physical fitness.

I'm willing to share my struggles and accomplishments, the only thing I want to do is avoid pride. I'm happy about my weight loss, but at the same time, I need to avoid being so proud of myself that I go bragging about it to everyone I meet. God has shown me that I need to be humble in this area or He will humble me.

Last night I ate treats that were full of carbs. I did though manage to only eat a couple bites of cake instead of a whole small piece...

Well, the strict part is regarding good carbs - not calories. In fact, they encourage you to eat as much as you want. The theory is that you already are feeling deprived by not eating the carbs you're used to, so they don't want you to also feel deprived with the amount of food you're eating. Besides, you can eat an awful lot of cucumbers and peas to equal the same calories as the carbs you're cutting.

So, all that to say - I was more concerned with whether drastically cutting my carb intake would be bad for nursing.

Some women get emotional after having a baby, others are just fine. Some people get emotional when they start cutting carbs, others are fine.

If, for any reason, you suspect you're going to feel below par from cutting carbs then don't do it ~ because ultimately what is bad for you, probably isn't going to help baby either (I don't mean nutritionally here, but if you're upset and tense, those feelings may be passed on too).

Carbs give a lot of energy ~ something that you may well need at this time.

Tammy, as I said earlier, I'm sure that there are many who would say there won't be a problem in you drastically cutting your carb intake while you're nursing, but is it really worth the risk? Why not switch carbs ~ instead of white bread, eat bread with 'bits' in it. Instead of potatoes, have sweet potatoes ~ and have less of them than you usually would.

You need to work with a therapist trained in eating disorders. simple suggestions to someone without an eating disorder can trigger relapse with someone who has one. It isn't anything to mess with.

With prayer and support. A person can't do it alone. Opening up to someone you can trust, good sister in the LORD. And getting into the Word of God. Reading his Word. Eating disorders are like an alcohol addiction...sex addiction or anything else. It is making an idol, a god out of alcohol, sex, food or a skinny body. When we glorify something or someone over Our Precious LORD, we always get into trouble. All of us "have stuff". All of us need each other.

You go to a 12 step group...perhaps that will help you. But you might end up making the 12 steps you god instead of the LORD if you are not careful.

I myself am an over-eater. I make food my idol. I fantasize all day long about eating good food.

Others fantasize about having a skinny body...it is all the same thing. Taming the flesh...submitting it to God. Walking in the Spirit.

Well, it's a self-imposed goal. I'm having surgery in a little over a month and would like to have a handle on weight-loss before then.

Well just be careful. Surgery can be draining and your body may not take kindly to going on a strict diet and then having surgery ~ recovery could take longer (so you run the risk of regaining the weight you've lost or just grinding to a halt until you're well).

I do hope the surgery goes well. Please remind us nearer the time so we can pray for you and a speedy recovery.

Thanks!! Truthfully, I'm not in too big of a rush, but my mom has started to push the diet-thing. (she can just come over here and we'll walk together - THAT will help me lose it sensibly ) I hadn't thought about it hampering the healing process, though. It's actually six weeks (now that I look at the calendar), so 10 lbs isn't too unreasonable.

Thank you!! I'll definitely let y'all know how it goes. I'm actually pretty excited about it because I've been trying to get authorization for about two years and it should help alleviate neck and back pain.

Y'all are doing great! Keep up the good work!

Harvie, I did see that I burn fewer calories because I'm 57 and only slightly overweight. I haven't found a website that takes height, weight, age, etc. into consideration. Do you know of a link?

I've only had one Coke in 5 days and lost two pounds in those 5 days. I was drinking 8 sodas a day before I began my weight loss challenge in Jan. I'm guessing a lot of the loss was 'water'.

I've lost 3 pounds in 3 weeks, and 3 inches off my waist Our weigh in and measurements at church is this Tuesday night. I am hoping to lose another pound by then. That would be 10 lbs in 2 months. My final weight goal is 124 lbs. Our challenge was for six months. I have 17 pounds to go.

Go HERE and log your information into the Burn Meter. (It's the calorie-count website I use all the time.)
