laura... -> A New Earth -- Oprah and Eckart Tolle (2/28/2008 2:20:40 PM)

Has anyone read this book by Echart Tolle? Oprah has been doing a huge, I mean, HUGE campaign for this book including a 10-week interactive "webinar" where Oprah and Tolle will teach the book.

The tagline for this event is "Get ready to be awakened."

I haven't read the book. I don't know what it's about. I'm not really interested in doing the on-line study. I'm just curious if anybody else has read it and/or knows anything about the book, the author, etc.

I believe that I have heard that there are already several million people signed up for the webinar. So, I expect a lot of talk about this book.

I've heard some exerpts from the book and from her show that featured the author. I'm planning to pray about it specifically during those 10-weeks-- that's a lot of people getting into a lot of new age hooey all at the same time. [&:]

I just went on Amazon.com and started reading a bit of the book using their "search inside" feature. It lets you read the first 6 pages of the first chapter. What a bunch of hooey--starting on page one. Here's an exerpt:

quote:

Chapter One
The Flowering of Human Consciousness
EVOCATION

Earth, 114 million years ago, one morning just after sunrise: The first flower ever to appear on the planet opens up to receive the rays of the sun. Prior to this momentous event that heralds an evolutionary transformation in the life of plants, the planet had already been covered in vegetation for millions of years. The first flower probably did not survive for long, and flowers must have remained rare and isolated phenomena, since conditions were most likely not yet favorable for a widespread flowering to occur.

Quite an opener. I just have one question. How could the planet be covered in vegetation for millions of years with no means for much of the vegetation to reseed itself?

quote:

Another exerpt from page 3-4:

Since time immemorial, flowers, crystals, precious stones, and birds have held special significance for the human spirit. Like all life-forms, they are, of course, temporary manifestations of the underlying one Life, one Consciousness. Their special significance and reason why humans feel such fascination for and affinity with them can be attributed to their etherial quality.
Once there is a certain degree of Presence, of still and alert attention in human beings' perceptions, they can sense the divine life essence, the one endwelling consciousness or spirit in every creature, every life-form, recognize it as one with their own essence and so love it as themselves. Until this happens, however most humans see only outer forms, unaware of the inner essence, just as they are unaware of their own essence and identify only with their own physical and psychological form.

This pretty much tells me that this book is just a regurgitated new age philosophy repackaged for the current decade.

rnershigh -> RE: A New Earth -- Oprah and Eckart Tolle (2/29/2008 5:02:56 PM)

Any time Oprah gushes over a new book or author I run in the other direction.[:D] More seriously, I love to read books, but I tend to be wary when Oprah starts raving about certain books or authors. Just because she says a book or author is good doesn't mean I'll think so. It's amazing people view her opinions on what books to read as something they should definitely be reading. Plus, the book mentioned in the OP seems like that new age stuff, which isn't surprising as Oprah is really into that.[8D]

Dancre -> RE: A New Earth -- Oprah and Eckart Tolle (2/29/2008 7:53:33 PM)

I usually read Oprah's fictional stuff b/ they are so well written, but like RN, I run when she touts a non-fictional book.

A Course in Miracles teaches its students to rethink everything they believe about God and life. The Course Workbook bluntly states: “This is a course in mind training”5 and is dedicated to “thought reversal.”6

A Course in Miracles is allegedly “new revelation” from “Jesus” to help humanity work through these troubled times. This “Jesus”—who bears no doctrinal resemblance to the Bible’s Jesus Christ—began delivering his channeled teachings in 1965 to a Columbia University Professor of Medical Psychology by the name of Helen Schucman.

HO, Mamasita!! Now that's off by at least a million miles!!! RUN!!!! Gives me chills that someone can write something so off, yet resembles Jesus. Shivers!! I'm glad the OP posted this, I want to avoid these folks!! Hopefully, Oprah's viewers will realize they are eating cardboard instead of steaks.

I agree kim. Sadly, you know that just because Oprah said this is "good", that many people will believe her.[8D]

bjay0801 -> RE: A New Earth -- Oprah and Eckart Tolle (3/3/2008 8:18:16 AM)

I agree with you. I read a small review on the book and it is supposed to be a mix of almost every religion known to man. (Christian, buddhism, ect.) And the fact that Oprah has endorsed this book means that millions of people will pick it up and read it on her say so alone. Talk about watch as well as pray. We realy need to do that now. Chuck Norris has a very good commentary concerning the book on www.worldnetdaily.com if anyone wants to read it.

Different title, different author, same garbage.

Tinkerbell_ -> RE: A New Earth -- Oprah and Eckart Tolle (3/4/2008 9:48:10 AM)

I read a review on this book and they said that it was soooo much better than Rick Warren's Purpose Driven Life. A girl I work with said she would read this book before Rick Warren's because it didn't have all of that 'religious hooey' in it. *blink*

stellaluna -> RE: A New Earth -- Oprah and Eckart Tolle (3/4/2008 10:03:35 AM)

Argh. My boss is all into the Oprah "hooey" and she's signed up for the whole ten weeks. <sigh>

Peaced -> RE: A New Earth -- Oprah and Eckart Tolle (3/20/2008 2:49:55 PM)

The article that was posted by Warren Smith is actually a good one. He's a reformed New Ager and does a lot of exposing of the unBiblical nature of it. I don't like Oprah personally. She's got a lot of influence over a lot of people and with what she professes to believe....that makes her dangerous in my opinion. Honestly I don't think Rick Warren is as dangerous as she is but I could be wrong there.

furrypurrykitty -> RE: A New Earth -- Oprah and Eckart Tolle (3/27/2008 12:40:06 PM)

"New Age hooey" goes a long way toward describing Oprah and her worldview as well as this book, I'm thinking. A couple of my friends (who are Christians) watch Oprah regularly and are big fans. They were so shocked when another friend and I told them Oprah is not a Christian, but a New Ager. "But she talks about God all the time!" they protested. When we pointed out that she never talks about Jesus Christ, they fell silent.

I never thought about that furrypurrykitty. I "like" Oprah and whole-heartedly agree that she is not a Christian but just couldn't put my finger on why I thought that. Your msg says it all. Thanks!

nativemary -> RE: A New Earth -- Oprah and Eckart Tolle (4/4/2008 7:28:47 PM)

Share this one with your friends who think Oprah is it. Of course, they will have to do some reading here and prayer too. See what the Lord reveals.

Oprah's name is Hebrew. Her name was given to her from the book of Ruth. Although, the spelling and pronunciation was changed from Orpah who Naomi sent back to her own people and the gods of her own people. The name Oprah has been rearranged throughout her career and used. As well as Harpo Productions. And quite frankly, still used. And not for the Lord but for the gods she worships.

Read and research for yourself and don't be shocked who she supports or should we ask supports her?

ManimalX -> RE: A New Earth -- Oprah and Eckart Tolle (4/4/2008 7:50:48 PM)

I was just about to post that youtube video link, mary. It is very revealing.

Folks, this is what anti-Christ looks like. It isn't scary, it isn't threatening, it isn't sacrificing small kittens and babies.... but it IS sad, because it is going to send people straight to hell.

When I was watching that video I could almost just see Satan standing behind Oprah, grinning and whispering with his hands buried in her skull as she spouted exactly the kind of stuff he loves. And she sits there and feels so empowered and proud that she is bringing such "truth" to the poor lost masses.

Pray for Oprah, and pray against the anti-Christ coming through her.

DreadPirateRandy -> RE: A New Earth -- Oprah and Eckart Tolle (4/4/2008 8:29:29 PM)

Can't somebody do the noble thing and slap some duct tape over her deceitful mouth?

nativemary -> RE: A New Earth -- Oprah and Eckart Tolle (4/5/2008 12:19:08 AM)

What is kind of interesting is that she suppports Barack Obama who says he is Christian but then what Christian accepts support from someone who outright denies Jesus is Christ. In actuality, maybe it is the other way around. Maybe he is the big supporter of her. Most probably both of them are just demons assigned by the antichrist.

DDouglass -> RE: A New Earth -- Oprah and Eckart Tolle (4/5/2008 8:10:39 AM)

Here is a quote from Eckart Tolle:

"Don't get attached to any one word. You can substitute 'Christ' for presence, if that is more meaningful to you. Christ is your God-essence or the Self, as it is sometimes called in the East. The only difference between Christ and presence is that Christ refers to your indwelling divinity regardless of whether you are conscious of it or not, whereas presence means your awakened divinity or God-essence."

You can read about Tolle in an article by Warren Smith here.

So how do we combat this? I just started a thread in Church about responding to our brothers and sisters. If you've had a discussion with another believer about this please post your incites. I just had a friend email me some things on this and she's doing the online study. She's also a believer and I know that we'll have a conversation about this one day.

WE only need to pray and trust God's Spirit to move. And He will. He can make much more of an impact than we can ever even think of doing. This new age nonsense has been going on for hundreds of years and still God's spirit is strong. Don't worry about this. God's Spirit will convict the folks who are into the new age junk and if they still refuse God's spirit, then that's their choice.

I haven't read the book, but saw the youtube video. I was very saddened by what I heard so I've been spending all afternoon searching about this. I just feel Oprah is misleading millions from the truth. Christ is the only way to the father. I heard her comment on the first webcast (i was trying to find out about it) that Jesus didn't begin Christianity. What is she thinking!? Jesus is Christ and Christianity is believing in HIM and following HIM. She also quoted a passage from Tolle's book and it said that "Man made God in his image" or something like that and she is agreeing. [:@] God made man in HIS image! I'm just so sad that people will believe this stuff and be lead away from knowing the only Savior, Jesus Christ.

Prayer is indeed awesome, but remember that God uses His BODY on earth to accomplish much of what He does. I am not very confident that Prayers that are launched as fire-and-forget missiles will ever hit a target.

If someone is cold, you don't tell them, "I hope you warm up, God bless you!", and then carry on your way. You give them a coat.

If someone is hungry, you don't tell them, "May you be filled with good food, be blessed!", and then carry on your way. You give them a meal.

Prayer and faith are good, but faith without works is dead.

Pray for opportunity and wisdom, and then start bringing Oprah up around the water cooler. Pray for Oprah, then write her a loving letter telling her how much God loves her and that what your concerns are about Tolle's book. Shoot, even pray for confusion among the people taking this course and then be ready with truth.

Pray, then be ready to do whatever God wills.
