yes, which I guess is why he's placed with all of the other false new world philosophy. I've just always been able to study other religions and life philosophies with any issue and even learn from them all and actually grow in my relationship to God through Christ in them all. I realize not everybody can handle or even understand the possibility of that.

tolle is a blatant disrespecter of Jesus. it's appropriate to be repulsed or alarmed by him. it's also important to understand why what he says is wrong. many christians or christian rasied, are drifting toward tolle's spin on who Jsesus is. not a little thing.

it's not about how christlike someone behaves. it's about knowing that Jesus is who He said He was and He is the only way to God the person Father. tolle TEACHES that Jesus was not who He said He was and that there is no God to answer to.

I see and understand your point - but being "Christ like" does not equate being born-again. Nor is it akin to knowing God.

I absolutely agree but I think using all of the life practices Christ taught can be beneficial to ourselves and those looking at us. My main point I was trying to drag out is that our flawed existence and nature needs more attention (individually) than it seems to get with most people. As soon as someone like Tolle puts out a book all of the sudden we see what mrsdash commented on and many Christians jump on board because the simple logic and suggestion of balanced thinking methodologies catch them by utter surprise. As Christians perhaps we should be addressing the cause of the problem rather than the results of of a non-Christian doing it.

tolle doesn't teach us life practises that Christ taught though, tolle creates an illusion of doing that. tolle wrote a spiritual book. it's appropriate to address it from a spiritual perspectvie.

Yes, but in the important scheme of things that is like putting a band-aid on a cancerous wound. What matters is not how "beautiful" of a life one can lead here on earth, but of our sin issue and separation from a holy God. Tolle's book is nothing more than old New Age adages and posturing - packaged and repackaged for modern day Western consumption.

no doubt you know how someone can use statistics to lie. that is what tolle is doing with his quotes of Jesus. He is using real quotes and creating the illusion that Jesus is compatible and even taught that form of spirituality. tolle also uses the phsychology to pull a person down the path of that spirituality. the truth of Jesus is being used in a twisted manner. so is the reality of the psychology being used for the same purpose, to lead down a specific spiritual path.

What is twisted and what is not with Tolle could be found in unrelated debate amongst Christians even in many of these forums. Each side swears to being lead by the Holy Spirit with truth and I'm convinced they believe it. Then continue reading and you will find many great Christian people that need SSRI's to adjust their thinking patterns, etc. I've read some Christian authors material as well, but I still have not found one that addresses the somewhat scientific aspects of our spirituality caused by our physical brains. Tolle does go as far as saying that the original interpreters of the bible didn't understand what Christ said enough to interpret it properly. A little piece of me is tempted to believe that statement when I consider the fact that the Church was "claimed" to be started by the politically motivated, idol worshiping, society and government (Rome).

The manuscript evidence, historical evidence, archaeological evidence, science of statistical probability, etc all point to the veracity of Scripture being what it claims to be - God's Word for all of mankind. With each turn of the archaeological spade we see the Bible being what it says it is. As a former atheist (not saying you are one), I do see what you're saying and where you're coming from. I am also currently writing a perspective on Tolle's new book for an apologetics organization, and one of my points from the piece is how Tolle touches on the zen of what a lot of people's itching ears want to hear today. It's not shocking to see it being popular, nor should it be. Such as been the case since the beginning of mankind, but moreso than ever, it serves this Western society to a tee.

I recon a lot of my topics would make me sound Atheist because I often take the other side in an effort to achieve the most learning possible for something I'm seeking learning in. This annoys my friends some. For Tolle, he is interesting, but the entire time I read his stuff I'm dissapointed with his anti-Christian comments. I'm interested in your writings if you can share when you finish. Thanks

J Since jbow answers that question in the quote I'll assume it's for me. I could be wrong, but I'll answer anyway. I'm still not sure with Joel Olsteen. I like hearing some of his stuff. The critics of him in my little small town world seem mostly opposed to him preaching positive minded lifestyles. I can't find bad in that, but maybe he should expand his preaching goals. Maybe many people would never have found Christ if it was not for him. I'm not of the caliber to judge the questionable claims of the debaters. Oprah..... no opinion really. I guess for entertainment TV her stuff is better than many other options. That's all I have to say about her. I don't like her personally. She don't interest me.

Do check out the Joel Osteen thread we have going on - chock full of video, audio, written documentation that shows when his teachings are tested in light of Scripture - he is a false teacher.

It is very sad about what she has become. The wikipedia definition of her is the largest I have ever read on any one person. Bigger even than Henry the VIII's!! Her huge influence is frightening. I do wonder what her deep south mainline christian relatives think of her now. Or did they too become her followers?

Oh, also. Her tv studio isn't as big as Joel Osteens YET. But how long will it take before she begins holding televised "services"? I suspect this will be the next thing with her. She won't be satisfied with XM or web stuff. She will begin having huge televised services bigger than any WOF we have seen so far. I think we are watching a monster in the making and have been for a long time. But now she is "busting out" and making her grand presentation. Very scary.

One thing I know is the "gates of hell" will not prevail against the Church. Rather than being defensive, I believe this is offensive in nature. Her teachings are leading people on the wide path to hell. It is time for the church to expose her false teachings.
