the difference is this.....
when in a walker a child is usually tipped forward more so that their feet can propel them forward in the walker...so they are leaning more and not sitting back like in an exersaucer. In there, if they are leaning forward it isn't to propel, it';s more then likely to jump....which is a different movement and doesn't put the same strain on the spine. (does that make sense?). Like I said, we have one, we just play "push the baby" with it instead of letting them really push themselves around in it...use it as an interactive toy...they love that!!!

Kim - I would also do it. I just told a friend of mine she could go ahead and have a baby while she is in med school because I would watch her baby no matter how old hers is and mine are!
Tell her to still check out the daycare though. I'm not sure if things are similar in your town as they are here in T.O. but you can't play around with daycare now that the system of funding spots has been changed. Here in T.O. the wait list is well over a year to get your baby in. Spots are just not available. So if she has an opportunity she should still look into it, but I think you shouldn't have any problems taking in another little one!

I remember in Uni learning that walkers were unsafe, they are banned from child care centres here, but I am sure you can still buy them privately from people who still have old ones. I don't know where the research is for them though.
I do remember my little sister zooming down the hallway in hers and she tipped and her head hit the brick wall, it was nasty and my dad lost it at my stepmum for letting her go so fast.

here is a study saying that for every 24 hours in a walker there is a delay by about 4 days of walking and standing
here is one that suggests it could be up to 26 days delay.
many articles also mentioned the high rate of injuries because of the walkers which seems to be of greater concern in the field.

Thanks for all your responses, ladies! It's given us a lot to talk/think about. Someone asked if I'm feeling obligated because she's a friend, and my answer is DEFINITELY NOT! She is a very good friend and I actually offered (casually) to watch him while she was pregnant since I knew I would eventually be staying home. I *did* think he'd be a bit older, though, but because she doesn't have mat leave right now she has to go back to work sooner rather than later. They're planning to have another though, and then she'd be going off on mat leave for a year ... so I'd only be watching him for nine months or so and then have a year off 
I'm leaning towards doing it, because it would be a wonderful way to bless my friend (she said she really wants to leave him with someone she trusts 100% and who she knows will be a good influence on him  ) as well as save her some hassle. At the day care, there's "set" days - so the baby would be there Mondays, Wednesdays, and every other Friday, so if she was unable to switch her shifts for those days, I'd still have to watch him! I will definitely encourage her to keep the spot if it's not a financial burden to them.

I just looked up the walmart website and they had 8 different walkers listed. So does the "illegal" factor vary by state? (I thought I had seen them at the walmart store today as well)

I think that in the US walkers are not illegal, just strongly discouraged. Personally I would never buy one because I took a header down the stairs in one as a baby. My Dad had gone downstairs to take the garbage out and the door did not close behind him. Fortunately he left the trash bag right at the bottom of the stairs because that is what saved me from landing on a cement floor. What is now the family joke (about Dad "throwing out" the baby) came very close to being the family tragedy.

ETA: I know they are designed better today with wider frames and stops etc. but to me they are just not worth the risk.

nope...sure haven't....but last time she had a baby she disappeared for a while (in fact, she is the reason we have contacts now...lol....fritz hunted her down for us last time because she didn't post for so long....lol). I would guess she is just getting into the groove of things and not around much.

So anybody have some sleep ideas for me? We had been putting Chase to bed around 10, and he hasn't been sleeping well. He's only slept through (8 hours) for about a week, then it all went to pieces. So a friend of mine suggested that I try putting him to bed around 7 or 8, because babies have a natural rhythm for bedtime around that time. So for the last week or so, we have been doing that, the first night he slept 8 til 6, but lately he's been up at 3 or 4 am and wide awake. He doesn't always eat, he's just up a lot.
I have read the Dr. Sears book on high needs babies, and I find even when we have him sleep in our bed he's still up 3 or 4 times a night. Just not sure what else I should try... any ideas?
He's almost crawling too He gets up on his knees and hands, and then pulls himself along with his arms. It's a modified crawl, but cute nonetheless.

I was going to suggest putting him to be earlier, but now I read your post more carefully it looks like that's what you're doing.
Have you read the No Cry Sleep Solution? It wasn't particularly revelatory for me but it might give you some new ideas. Do you think there is something that is catching his interest, that he's wide awake at that time of night?

at that age all of mine went to be pretty late (as late as midnight usually)...and they all slept pretty well for their ages. However, it is not uncommon for a baby of that age to NOT sleep "through the night". He's a baby,...that's what they do.

There are some points on which I agreed with the book (like, if you're in an airplane and you're baby's fussy, nurse him) but the motivation for what I do, and the motivation Ezzo thinks I should have are completely different. I would nurse a baby on a plane to soothe him and make sure he feels safe and comfortable. Ezzo's reasoning is that I should do it soley for the sake of the other passengers, and that it's not really good for the baby but a necessary evil. 
And that by 6 months a baby should only nurse/bottle 3 times a day, never at night, and be eating solids 3 times a day.
