don't force it Amber. At least IMHO. My second hated tummy time too, and did the same thing. So I quit making her. She liked it tons better when she learned to roll and could control her tummy time kwim?
Tummy time is not the end all be all in muscle strengthing.

You can try what Manda said, but in my kids they weren't ready for "real timeout" at that age.....just putting them down and walking away worked good.

Let's just say that for me, apart from anything else, *I* was ready for my ds to have "real timeout" at that age - *I* needed the break, even just for a minute or two. Just having time to catch my breath enabled me to "equalise" myself and be able to react calmly after that.

I could never use the bathroom for Levi. He'd be into the potty and the catbox in 2 seconds. I do put him in the pack n play and ignore him though. He usually stops pretty quickly.

I didn't have a playpen (I think that's what you call a pack and play), so really the bathroom was the only option (the bottom of the stairs would have been too dangerous - they were very steep - and I also wouldn't have been sure he'd sit still).

I can understand your not using the bathroom if you had a litter tray (your catbox) in there!

Mine didn't get into the toilet though - because I put him in the bath! (no water though, lol)

Chase hated tummy time too. I didn't force it either, and now he's doing great. He didn't mind it so much on my belly or hubby's belly. Even if we got down on the floor with him he still hated it, so I would try him every once in a while, just to see, but I didn't force it. He's doing fine now, and almost crawling, and has lots of strength.

Are there any babies out there that actually liked tummy time??

Mine all LOVED tummy time -- possibly because I put them on a playmat which was filled with water and toy fishies ... LOL ... they stayed on their tummies for ages which watching the fish 'swim' every time they slightly shifted their body weight!!

(As for the tummy time on mommy while she lies on her back -- I wear glasses, and even with them on, there has always been that one huge drool 'drop?' which manages to avoid the glasses altogether and land squarely IN my OPEN eye!!! Yuck!!!

I THINK this is the right thread for this...
I know this is a while off but I dwell on things until I have an answer. We are planning on keeping the baby in our room for a while, probably not over a few months, something we will just play by ear...is a pack and play with the bassinet sufficient to keep in the bedroom for the baby to sleep in? Or do I need more of a "real" bed?

Erin, I'm sure the baby will be fine in a bassinet. Mary slept in something like this for her first four months.

LADIES GUESS WHAT!!!! MARY HAS A TOOTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was starting to think she would never have teeth but today before naptime I checked and there it was, starting to poke through!!!! It has been an exciting couple days, first crawling and now A TOOTH!!!!!!!!!!!

We co-sleep, but I have the pack'n'play in our room for the nights where it is necessary for the babe to sleep on his own ... that way we are right there if he needs us, but he still has his own 'safe' space. The times it becomes necessary for him to sleep in the pack'n'play are (for example) when dh or I are so sick that we know we wouldn't be aware of him in the bed (due to strong cold or migraine meds, etc)

Do I need something more like that? Or will something like THIS work? I dont want my baby to be uncomfortable. Something I read said it was great for "quick" naps, does that mean its not suitable for regular usage? I dont want to be a bad mommy. After a month or two we plan to move the baby to his or her own room, but I want the baby in our room for a while. I can just see getting more long term useage out of the pack and play, not to mention being conveniently portable.

Erin....we have a travel size playpen with the bassinet top part. Jack used that until he moved into his own room here a few months ago. We took the top bassinet part off when he got too big for that. Now granted, he is small for his age, but still....it worked well over a year for us.

Erin,

We used a pack-n-play for our younger children (for a long time--close to 2 years)--it had the bassinet part -- **note you need to be really careful with how you put it together**. We had a crib with our first, and the hardware (screws and bolts) went missing after a few moves. So, we actually used it until the kids were ready for a toddler bed.

Erin, I think the pack n play would be fine. I really only use the bassinet part for the first month, until I am fully healed and stop bleeding. Then I put them in the bottom of it and don't worry about them rolling out (I have early movers ).

We have a "real" bassinet, but it was given to us. I never would have bought one. So we use that upstairs and the pack n play downstairs.

Both of my kids love tummy time, I don't think I have ever seen a child in my family or of friends or in child care who hasn't liked it.
Amber when do you put him down? If its after a feed it could be disturbing his wind and may need to be picked up and then burped. Nath gets that way a little bit but like Karaboo said we have fun mats and toys and lay down with them. He also lays on my belly alot which he loves to do. He will need to get on the floor at some stage so even if he stays for a few mins a day its good.

We found Akeelah would NOT sleep in the bassinet part of the pack and play. We're guessing it was too soft for her, we don't know, but she slept much better in just the playpen.

I've seen a lot of babies that disliked it. I think it's pretty common until they are closer to mobility. Nate really did not like to be on his tummy on the floor and actually my grandmother was constantly chiding me for having him in his sling--"If you keep carrying that baby, he'll NEVER learn to crawl!" she said. Well, he crawled at 5 months! I said, "Gee, Gramma, I'm sure glad I carried him all that time or he'd have been crawling at 3 months!"

Erin, we have the same pack n play just in a different pattern and that is what we used the first couple of months until we moved him into his own room. He did end up sleeping with me most nights for a while so we actually didn't use it a whole lot. It should be fine though for what you are wanting to use it for. If you are anything like me the less I have to find room for the better and I didn't want to have to store a pack n play along with a bassinet, we just don't have the space.

Go Mary! That's wonderful, Chelsea.

I love babbling, too, Nicole. These days it almost seems like Nathan is responding to me when I talk to him - as in, when I talk to him, he babbles back.

Erin, like I told you before, we used the Pack N Play a couple times... Gabby wasn't a huge fan but I think that was more because I tried to force her to sleep on her back then because of the PNP. We put her in her crib by 8 weeks and we all slept much better. If we had a king size bed though I would have been more apt to cosleep for a longer period of time.

Tummy Time- Gabby hated it even with her fancy play mats and me laying with her.
