Yes! That's exactly the show I saw. It was pretty funny. I didn't realize the character was an alien...

Have you ever seen 'Only when I laugh'? It's an old (late '70's-early 80's) comedy set in a hospital.

Did that have Kristy McNichol in it?

Only When I Laugh is a British comedy so I doubt it. If she was, it would have only been a small part and it was mostly male actors.

Hmmm..... not what I was thinking. I was thinking of a movie that had (I think) Marsha Mason an actress who was also an alcoholic, single mom of a teen daughter (played by McNichol). Now that I think about it, I think the movie I'm thinking of was late '70s or early 80s.

I heard today that Little Britain USA is being panned by critics. That's pretty sad.

Some people have no taste! Not that I've seen it, but still! I never watched Little Britain, but I can't resist this...

That's a bummer, Margie. I think maybe a lot of Americans don't get British humor. I can't really explain it, but it is different from American humor. I get it though, and I think Brits are pretty funny.

From the trailer I've seen, it does poke a bit of fun at Americans, so I'm wondering if that's the reason. Added to which, nope, the Americans don't really understand British humour.

The radio program I listen to in the morning were reporting the story and hinted to the fact that Americans have no sense for humour either. They had commented they thought this was the funniest show they had ever seen. They enjoy Ricky Gervais' sense of humor as well. I don't get what's wrong with it. Almost everyone I know enjoys Monty Python. Why is that accepted? But Americans don't seem to enjoy other Brit-coms? Spamalot sold out everywhere it was put on. Is it because Brits can much more easily poke fun at themselves and not take things too seriously?

It may well be; we seemed to have turned self-deprecation into an art form!!

It would be interesting to know what precisely they didn't like. Whether it's the "larger than life" (often revoltingly so) characters in general, or whether it's more specifically the American characters.

Little Britain often pushes the boundaries for British viewers, so I can imagine that a vastly more conservative American audience might have real problems. Especially if they don't get the concept of using extremes to make a point.

I've only seen a tiny amount of Little Britain and I have to say that personally, I had to turn it off - I found it vulgar to say the least. I'm sure there are some funny characters but personally I wouldn't recommend anyone else watch it without a warning that for every funny moment there are probably another 5 that I find offensive. Nothing to do with British humour - I personally don't find naked fat suits, the F word and much innuendo about homosexual sex acts funny.

From what they were saying in the papers about the US version it sounds even worse! I was going to give a link but I'm pretty sure it would be in violation of TOS.

Just my opinion - watch at your peril, and don't bring the kids!

Well, if you read what I've posted before on Little Britain, you will see that I said there were characters I liked and others I didn't.

Sounds to me like you may well have not watched enough to see enough of what Little Britain is about; like you've only seen 2 or 3 of the skits. There are lots of other characters, where the skits contain no F words and no references to homosexuality, and they examine/expose things like racism and attitudes to disability.

My children watch it with us - my dd has watched it since she was 13.

You're probably right Manda. They do push the boundaries though and it can make for uncomfortable viewing in places - sometimes that can be a good thing, depends on your viewpoint.

It's the sort of programme my old English Lit tutor would have loved to have us disect - as it was we had Monty Python, Coronation Street and the songs of Bob Dylan .

You were so lucky!! I don't think we ever looked at anything "contemporary" in our very old-fashioned grammar school for "gels".

Nor at my girls school... we would never have gotten the opportunity to watch some of these programmes cos we'd have been tucked up in bed!

A girls school, is that like a bording school where you live? Is that pretty common over there for many kids to attend bording school?

There are all-girls' boarding schools, but mine wasn't, it was just a (day) high school (11-18) just for girls.

But agapetos did go to a boarding school.

There are some boarding schools over here, but I wouldn't say it was at all common.

Some of us get Brit humor. We just find it interesting that Brits go out of their way to prove they can't spell. (<-- I had to put a smiley face there or Southerners wouldn't understand that I'm kidding, bless their little hearts. )

They just repeated the show and I caught the end of Jamie Oliver and then them... yes, with that certain clip!

I've read a couple of reviews and I can't help but wonder if the American reviewers really are offended or simply don't understand the humour. I've only seen a couple of clips so far and most of it's been really funny, not offensive.

I showed Robert some of the clips on YouTube, he sorta chuckled at the "computer says no" but he was like, "Uh, that was lame" while I'm sitting there laughing my butt off. I dunno, I don't see how people don't "get it."

Agapetos, did you like going to boarding school...seems like it's always dipicted in movies as a bad place to be.

They may also not have "got" the fact that some of the humour comes from having seen the characters a few times, and just waiting for the inevitable to be said or done. Even though there is a certain predictability about it all, there is also humour to be found in that too (and then sometimes there are things that then take us by surprise as well, being worse/funnier than we anticipated! like when Andy pushed his own wheelchair over and said that Lou's gf did it, for example)
