We do a book at a time, broken down by verse or sometimes we will do a series on a certain topic. Last year we did about 6 months on getting to know Jesus and who He was. It was really neat to study specifically about Jesus' life and the events that took place.

We do a topical message series (I think that's the right way to describe it). For example, the pastor just finished a message series called Enjoy Life. The message titles were Make your Life Count, Get along with People, Focus Forward, and Enjoy Now (I pulled this info from our church website- I didn't have it memorized or anything). The messages aren't as "fluffy" as they might sound from the titles.

I like either NIV or KJV, depending on my mood. I also have one that's the Complete Jewish Bible- it translates some of the words back into the original hebrew and has some of the books in a different order. It makes for interesting reading. The pentecostal church I went to in college preached out of only the KJV, so that's what I was used to hearing. Our current church uses all sorts of translations- CEV, The Message (not my personal favorite), etc.

Ahhhhh, I love me some good, expository preachin'/teachin'. It's like a nice, big juicy steak. [:D] But that's just me.

Our pastor is expository a lot of the time, he just finished a series on the ten commandments and it was very good. A lot of the time, though, he just preaches what the Holy Spirit has laid on his heart that day/week. He tells it like it is. I enjoy his preaching and am frequently nudged by the Spirit!

Versions -- I grew up using the KJV or NKJV most of the time, my family wasn't "KJV-onlyist", it was just what we were used to. I like to use NKJV most of the time. I also like to read straight from the Greek (I studied classical/koine Greek in college) and when I do I use NASB as a companion.

I'd encourage you to persevere, as clapping can be very powerful and is Scriptural after all. There are so many OT references to clapping in worship. It's also a great way of getting children involved in music.

Have you heard of a singer called Ron Kenoly? If you ever get a chance to listen to his CD "God is Able") (Amazon Link here), he actually takes time to instruct the audience on hand-clapping and it is very enlightening.

Interesting! I've never heard of anyone in our church being bugged by the flags. Maybe it's because it's not for every song, and because it's at the side or back rather than right in the middle at the front.

Ok I believe in the Baptist Distinctive part of their website but they get off on a tangent (my opinion, of course) about KJV being the best translation of the bible. That's what I think too!!

With the flag thing, its only the older women mainly who do it at my church and their kids, don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. (I dont know how old you are Manda). And Ryanne I am with you, they bug me! I can see them out the corner of my eye and it distracts me, especially if you can hear them flapping about!

As for praise and worship, I am in a Pentecostal (AOG) church so I enjoy clapping along to the songs (I jumped around when I was younger), I dont like shouting out though, not my thing.


Our pastor just preaches what he feels led to preach. Sometimes it might be a few sermons on worship or evangelism etc. The more "study" type stuff, going through book by book is saved for Bible study.

I'm KJV girl. I grew up with NIV, but my current church uses KJV. We're slowly switching over to the Modern KJV (not everyone seems on board), but when I study I use both, and then the NIV if I'm really stuck on something.

Jeanie - don't come to my church then![;)] There are some really great slow songs, but I like the fast stuff and playing the tambourine. For the most part our music is fast though on Sunday mornings (it's a Caribbean church, so would there be anything else?)

We do song service (3 songs, opening prayer, bible reading, a few more songs), then praise and worship service (we sing choruses and people give testimonies), then we go into the sermon.

Our sermon is on topics and our pastor jumps all over the Bible. In Bible class before the service, we study by chapter. Sometimes we jump all over, but we are currently studying the New Testament straight through.

If they were in the back then I wouldn't mind, but at our old Vineyard they were done upfront and down the middle of the aisle. It's actually one of the main reasons my parents decided to leave that church.

We have an aisle at each side, not in the middle, so maybe it's not so obtrusive.

If I get distracted during worship, I tag my husband to keep an eye on the kids and I close my eyes. Problem solved.

I really try not to judge how other people worship, whether they do it quietly or energetically. I'm not a banner worshiper, but I do enjoy watching my kids worshiping in that way. I'm a very quiet worshiper and there may even be people who don't think I am worshiping, but that's not their business and I don't care what they think.[:D]

Our pastor will sometimes do a series of sermons on a particular topic. Sometimes it will be a single sermon a particular topic he feels is important.

Each Sunday we read from the OT, the Gospels, and some other part of the NT. The verses read are set up ahead of time, so that in 3 years of Sundays, we read the entire Bible. But the Pastor does not necessarily preach from those verses.

Currently we are without a pastor because our pastor retired after 40+ years in the ministry; 28 of which were at our church. He would preach a on certain topic over a period of time usually though sometimes he would feel as God laid something on his heart to preach different from the current topic. I loved his preaching because he did not mind stepping on toes and not sugar coating the word of God. We have been having guest speakers since he retired as we are looking for a new pastor. So they sermons have been very different from Sunday to Sunday. Some great and some not so great...I am definitely ready for a permanent pastor to be in place.

That is how ours is set up, too, except the srmon does come from the readings.

Look in yours and see if the OT reading is related to the Gospel reading--ours is, and I think that is cool[:)]

If you do mean sermon by "have some stuff," that is pretty much how our church is.

I was wondering what you all believe your church is there for? What do you think your church's mission is?
Is it to feed the Christians and build them up, serve the community, raise up people who will be missionaries? All of that and more?

Equipping (building up, strengthening, encouraging) of the saints (those who are saved) for the spreading of the Gospel, both near and far. A means for the body of Christ to fellowship with each other, make connections that last throughout the week, and spur each other toward holiness.

What it's not meant to be...a place we come once a week, sing some songs that make us feel good, pledge our allegiance to our Savior and our church family and then walk out and live like the world the rest of the week.[:o] (Yes, I know of some churches like this. They scare me terribly.)

I would say it's a combination of what Donna said, plus outreach to the local community and sometimes, depending on the calling of the church, international missions.

To me, that is part of spreading the Gospel in the immediate area, part of what we should be being equipped to do. After all, Jesus often met people's physical needs before he met their spiritual need.

People need to see the church living right and being real, at the same time. Otherwise, we're a bunch of phonies and why would they want what we have?

Our church is also HUGE on international missions. That would be the "far" part of spreading the Gospel.

Donna- yep, we need to be living right, which is the following I took from my denominations head website makes me so confused and the reason why I skipped church this morning....
"Life is meant to be lived as an increasing adventure in prosperity. God’s intention is to prosper the righteous so that they can demonstrate the power of His Kingdom on earth. Prosperity is not an option but a mandate and responsibility given to all who believe in the authority of the name of Jesus. We are called to show forth the wonders of His increasing Kingdom, and this clearly requires an increasing measure of affluence so that we can have an increasing measure of influence. "

"The message of the Bible is just as relevant today as it was to the world when it was first penned, but the challenge to the Church is to effectively communicate that message to those around us. Someone has stated that the message of the church should never change, but the method of declaring that message should always change. We must always be looking for contemporary ways in which to communicate the truth of God’s Word."

What bothers me in the first one is about the living with affluence so we can be an influence. Mother Teresa wasn't affluent but she was more influential then the pastors I know of. I don't know why they keep saying we need to prosper to show God's goodness, because even those who are "prosperous" have times when they aren't so prosperous, like divorce, losing children, sickness. GRRRR

The second one annoys me because it seems like keeping up with the latest technology, having new instruments etc is more important then providing a coffee morning for the oldies, prison ministry, hopsital ministry.
Ugh I am having a HUGE time with church and I don't know what to do about it. I can't go to another one as that isn't an option here. It would tear my husband apart as he has just come back to God and the church. Would these just be minor things that you would look aside for or not?

I would look away from them for a time if it meant my husband was able to walk properly with the Lord, but I would certainly be seeking that the Lord would open my husbands eyes to questionable teaching.

Your AOG churches are WAY different then ours in the US.

Thanks, I don't want this to affect him so I am trying to not share with him how I feel. I know its hard with him being a PK, and his dad is on the exective for one of the states here, so its very deep in the family roots. And seeing him reading his bible and WANTING to go to church is so awesome. Ugh, why am I crying?!

I hope I in no way, shape, or form gave the impression that our church was like that. We don't have a lot of what we consider "frills," but we take worshipping God and the preaching and application of the word very seriously, and really believe in living what we learned throughout the week. Our church members hold each other very accountable.

Ryanne you are right, AOG America is VERY different to us here. I just read their positions on things like divorce, confessions and prosperity, its the opposite to what they are teaching in Australia. I wonder how they can be the same denomination but VERY different...
