I agree with you. Tongues spoken in public worship are to be translated in order to edify the body of Christ. Prayer Lanquages are private, for intimate, private praise & worship in the Spirit of the Living God. The speaking of tongues is one of many manifestations of a spirit-filled believer and is in no way relative to salvation. I have actually been studying the Holy Spirit and the blessing of His infilling. Having come from a Southern Baptist church, these teachings weren't focused on. I have to say, though, that as I grow in my studies, my Pastor's words are continually brought to my mind. Everything he taught was biblical. The emphasis is just a little different, make sense? I have come to know the Holy Spirit as a person, an equal participant of the triune, our Helper, the One to lead us through the Word to bring glory to God the Father and God the Son. And I have never spoken in tongues, nor have I ever witnessed it. But I hope to. There will almost always be a few in a church family that just don't get it. No matter what the doctrine, there will be some that don't see eye to eye. Don't let those difference become a stumbling block to you and your husband. Even if your dh is one of those that believes that tongues are mandatory, that need not divide you. The Word is living and alive for each of us. Perhaps, since people who have the gift of tongues received it at their conversion, they cannot fathom any other type of conversion experience and are imposing their human perception onto all others and effectively putting their God in a box. Should that cause another that did not receive that gift question their salvation? Absolutley Not! I will pray that you and your dh can rise above this distraction and embrace your freedom in Christ. Dear Lord, God Almighty, I lift up daughter_of_faith and her husband, Lord, as they search for Godly discernment on this issue. I pray they reach the accord they seek in You, Father God. In Jesus' precious and holy name I pray this, Amen.
