Good morning all. (um, er, afternoon)
i slept in this morning and arrived at work 2 hours late. i did it on purpose. I'm going to do it again tomorrow  . it felt good to just wake up when my body was ready to wake up and not wake to the raging of the alarm clock.

so, so sorry to hear about your mother's days yesterday. my mom and i don't have the best relationship either. i did call her yesterday and wish her a happy mother's day, and i sent her a card. my mother can be very hateful and manipulative as well. i've almost reached my limit with her.
we went for a long time without speaking. i was the one who broke the silence by calling her. i forgive her and then she's nice for about a day, then she'll turn on you and say the meanest and most hurtful thing she can possibly say....then scold you for getting offended.
she makes me crazy. it was reeeeeeaaaaaalllllly difficult for me to even speak to her yesterday to wish her happy mother's day. i wanted to say Happy Mother's day, sorry you were stuck with an ungrateful imperfect child like me. It must be difficult being you."....but i held my toungue.
anyway, don't want to gripe and complain about her too much because then i just dwell on it and it makes me bitter. i do love her, and i want a relationship with her, but i can't have it when it's on just her terms.
grumble..

Most death rituals do several things: funerals bring closure to the survivors and help them face the reality of death, graveside services also gently force people to see that death is reality, and they also provide freinds and realitives an opportunity to gather and offer condelenses. This particular ritual of placing flowers on graves helps give a moment of remembrance in our other wise busy times. It also shows respect, rememberance, and love for the deceased. No one has to do it, but for many it is a good thing. In some areas, it is a cultural thing and is expected. In others it is not. Where I live, not putting flowers on Granny's grave at Christmas is something to cause gossip, it is so unheard of.

my great grandmother has been gone since 1983. my mom still puts flowers on her grave for mother's day, christmas, birthday, and at several other parts of the year...just as she does for my dad, my cousin who passed, my other great grandmother who died in 91, and a friend of hers whose entire family died within 6 months of each other.
my mom makes the rounds about every 4 or 5 weeks. i don't know if i'd be that diligent, but that's what her mother did, and what her mother's mother did.
my grandmother makes a pilgrimage to her hometown every couple of years or so to lay flowers on her father's grave and her step father's grave. they have both been dead for over 40 years.

Same here, elastic. There are graves 140 years old that have fresh flowers at least once a year.

i think caring for the graves and remembering the lives of the dead in this particular way is really a lost familial tradition. if that makes sense.
we are just too busy nowadays for the little things. i think it's very sweet to continue the tradition

Afternoon all. I'm sitting slouching here at the desk while the angels sleep. I'd like to pull up a cot and join them. Didn't sleep hardly any last night. Maybe a good 2 hours, but that was it.
