This will not come as a surprise to any of you but ---REALLY GOOD?

In my opinion that would be
Soul'd Out Quartet and Spoken 4 Quartet

My favorites and therefore in my opinion the best are:

Triumphant Quartet, Crossway, and Austins Bridge. Triumphant and Austins Bridge are amazingly talented, doing well and are well known. Crossway though doing well, doesn't get anywhere near the attention and recognition they deserve for the talent they have.

Credit is due 'THE OLD PATHS'. Everywhere they go outside their home area as well as their home area, they get great reviews. They are also nominated in the top 10 for Horizion Group of the Year.

I have been thinking about this one... I like the Down East Boys alot! I met them and saw them at NQC this year and they were amazing on the main stage. I guess they kinda fly under the S.G.M. radar. I think they a pretty good.

I'd like to get re-introduced to the Down East Boys. I liked them in the '80s but don't know anything about them now. Maybe I can meet them this year.

I don't take offense at that. Honestly, it makes me feel old to say "I remember listening to this group 20 years ago." It encourages me when a young person loves the music as much as I did (and still do). I'm sure the new Down East Boys are good; I just need to hear them.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

A few random comments...

Yeah, I know that everyone will have their own definition of what's "really good". So I'll take all recommendations with a grain of salt. :)

Being in San Diego, Southern gospel concerts here are very rare. So all I can do is buy albums based on past experience or other's recommendations.

A lot of groups I've heard over the past few years fit into the following category: When they do I song I like, it's awesome, but there's maybe one or two such songs on each album. Then there's the groups where how good their albums sound depends on what their current lineup is, or who produced their current album.

Groups that can be relied on to produce consistently good product are rare -- but then, that's always been the case.

My own tastes are fairly eclectic. I mainly like the more traditional sounding groups. Sometimes the more contemporary types such as GVB will do something I like, but not as often. I don't mind a little bluegrass, and country's good too -- in fact I have a lot of Christian Country music in my collection. (Also, during the 70's it seemed like most of the mixed SG groups and many of the quartets, had a bit of a country sound.)

I like the Dove Brothers! Kingdom Heirs are good too, at least last time I bought any of their albums. Haven't heard Triumphant Qt, but from the comments here it sounds like I should check them out.

I didn't know that Legacy 5 was still going, after Roger Bennett's untimely passing. I bought their first two albums and I hate to say it but I was kind of disappointed. The only song I really liked was "Salvation Is The Miracle".

Been a while since I heard Gold City, didn't know they were still going either. Or the Kingsmen. Last I'd heard, they were the "Carolina Boys".

Haven't heard the Hoppers or Jeff & Sheri Easter in a long time, ought to check them out again.

Several of the other groups mentioned are completely new to me, which is great, I'll have to check them out too.

Again, thanks to everyone for all the suggestions!

I must chime in here and settle the question once and for all. The Booth Brothers and virtually untouchable when it comes to true southern gospel harmony. I have listened to sg all my life and never have I heard harmony composed w/ such perfection. I am very biased towards this group I know, but this group's vocals are unmatched. Ronnie Booth, in my opinion, has the smoothest and the most pronounced voice out there. Go Booth Brothers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They got their name back about 2 years ago and got some new members to go with it, they were really good on their last CD but just got 2 new members again, so when their new CD comes out (May 22nd I think) we will see how they are now.

The Whisnants are really good. Talley Trio & Crabb Revival are also.

You can also youtube some of these groups as well. I know CA doesnt get many SG concerts out there so youtube would be a good way for you to get to see some of the artist perform.

All of the above groups are good. Most of them sing full time, they do it for a living. On the other hand, there are a lot of regional and part time
singing groups that are also really good that sometimes don,t get the recognition they deserve. Would you travel, and how far would you travel to hear a good part time group? Let,s hear some good comments on your favorite part time groups

I would agree with some of you. I am a big fan of seeing new groups get the attention they deserve. Often times I hear the praises of older groups because they have name value but the new group are just as good. Soul'd out, Old Paths, Booth Brothers, Mike LeFevre qt, Monument and Austins Bridge are just a few of the many AWESOME groups that have come along. Im a big fan of the Down East Boys as well.

In My Humble opinion and this will be no shock to no one, the best male quartet now is The Dove Brothers. Heard them tonight and I can testify, they were in true form! I cannot say enough good things about these fellas! Go Doves!

My top picks currently are The Whisnants, Brian Free & Assurance, The Perrys, Kingdom Heirs, The Greenes, Greater Vision, and Legacy Five. The first three are probably my top favorites out of this list!

I've gotten to listen to the new project, and you won't be disappointed! I believe this will put The Kingsmen back to the top.

Currently, Brian Free & Assurance and the Kingdom Heirs are just untouchable, in my opinion.

I'm also a Dove Brothers and Triumphant fan.

Interestingly, I actually voted for Gold City for Favorite Artist of the Year. They've been the best in years past, but I think Jonathan Wilburn's departure was a huge blow.

As far as Horizon groups go, GO SOUL'D OUT!!
