You should totally go buy one of those super cool "Phantom of the Opera" masks! [:D]

I'm the big one. The little one is my oldest daughter.

edgibson -> RE: Avatars, free expression, or offensive to some. (3/17/2008 3:00:22 PM)

It takes a fair bit to offend me. I think that the avatars do provide a little personality to a post. It is hard to know how to take some people just by what they type.

So, which one offended you?[;)]

SuspenseWriter -> RE: Avatars, free expression, or offensive to some. (3/17/2008 3:00:42 PM)

Love it, Coach! (I'm now a grandpa, and pictures like yours make me smile like a possum eating a sweet potato). [:D]

That would be amazing. Then I could learn to sing and play the organ and capture women in caves. . .err. On second thought, maybe it's not so amazing.

LOL! Well maybe the singing and organ playing part [;)]

dance4joy -> RE: Avatars, free expression, or offensive to some. (3/17/2008 3:06:48 PM)

You got something really super creepy up your sleeve that's going to give us all nightmares?

[;)]

Oooh oooh, I know! You're going to post a real "Bride of Chucky" picture!

lightshineon -> RE: Avatars, free expression, or offensive to some. (3/17/2008 3:12:04 PM)

Does it shape your view of the person, and how you respond to them in a post.
I think avatars tend to help shape my view of a person... only because here, sometimes there is not much to go on. The avatars don't shape how I respond to people in posts....

Do you pay attention to them?
Yes... I love the variety and talent I see here...

Do you find some offensive?
I have never been offended here... but I have seen one or two questionable ones in regards to the environment of these forums.

ta_mosquito -> RE: Avatars, free expression, or offensive to some. (3/17/2008 3:41:32 PM)

I've had my avatar for over 2 years now. Sometimes I think of changing it, but people know me by my avatar. In a way I'd hate to change it.

I do identify people by their avatar, and when they change it, it throws me for a loop for a while. (edgibson - did you used to have a white dog as your avatar? Argh!) [8D]

Since they do reflect people's personalities, I do judge people a bit by their avatar. I mean, if someone has a... uhh... what's a good example. Hmmm. Well, never mind. I don't want to offend anyone with an example. [;)]

I like yours. it should win best avatar award. You do not think I am three do you? mentally anyway?[;)]

Random -> RE: Avatars, free expression, or offensive to some. (3/17/2008 4:22:12 PM)

I am offended by the word "avatar" but I have not been offended by anyone's choice of pictorial representation. I would prefer the term icon, image or something without a Hindu etymology.

I sometimes notice icons, but rarely draw anything from them. I might notice them as pictures, but I don't really connect them with the person doing the posting. In fact, I don't often pay attention to who I am responding to, I just try to respond to what is said, rather than who is saying it, unless it's someone I've come to know well on the forum.

As for signatures, I rarely read those either. Nothing against them, I just don't take the time.

Ps103 -> RE: Avatars, free expression, or offensive to some. (3/17/2008 4:26:49 PM)

I prefer the phrase "Thingamabob under your screenname."

I adored Bette Davis' acting. Every time I see her in a movie now, I think, "It's Kate Ps103!"

bluestone -> RE: Avatars, free expression, or offensive to some. (3/17/2008 4:33:32 PM)

I don't care for avatars or screen names that seem to be trying to win a "who is the most holy" contest.[&:]

car2ner -> RE: Avatars, free expression, or offensive to some. (3/17/2008 4:39:24 PM)

Oh, my other palidan avatar is the holy one... the blue goat girl...

I think the pictorial representations are interesting and fun... some people are very creative. I don't change mine very often because I get frustrated getting it down to a size that fits.

Let's face it, we so say atleast a little about myself by the pics and taglines and fonts we chose. Of course, I am not really short, muscular and hairy.

elastic -> RE: Avatars, free expression, or offensive to some. (3/17/2008 4:48:31 PM)

and luckily for my husband, i look nothing like kiefer[8D]

i only use him as my avatar because he's so pleasing to look at..i get to see him every time i post something[:)]

SuspenseWriter -> RE: Avatars, free expression, or offensive to some. (3/17/2008 4:50:20 PM)

I could always change my avatar from Taz to my real picture on my website; that would be offensive! [:D]

techne -> RE: Avatars, free expression, or offensive to some. (3/17/2008 5:33:42 PM)

i would hope that, if people are offended by an avatar, they would pm that individual and engage them in some discussion about it. i would expect that most people aren't intentionally trying to offend anyone -- they have chosen their avatar for any number of reasons: personal, aesthetic, conceptual. i highly doubt there are too many people out to offend.

I'd like to think avatars give us a little insight into one another's personalities. I can't say I've ever been offended by one.

I agree. That and sig lines give a good indication if someone has a sense of humor or not(for example) and so it helps if something they've posted could be taken two ways. If you know they're a goofball by their avatar & sig then you can probably take what they've posted humorously.

If some stranger PM'd me and told me that my avatar, no matter what it was so long as it conformed to forum rules, offended them, I'd think they were really whacked.

GeorgiaNerd -> RE: Avatars, free expression, or offensive to some. (3/17/2008 5:53:13 PM)

I like looking at avatars on here because so many of the handles are similar, such as ILoveJesus or biblegurl (sorry if I used anyone's real handle). The pictures show personalities, like who is a crazy cat lady or who has the most well behaved kids (or at least the ones that clean up the best). I'm not offended by any avatars here, though I don't care for violent, sexy or judgmental images. The judgmental ones might offend me a little bit, such a an atheist symbol surrounded by a null symbol. However, I don't have a problem with allowing free expression here. I respond based on the content of the post, not the avatar.

Mine shows that I love my 'Dawgs and that I'm an animal lover as well. A bit silly sometimes too.

I always feel like I am talking to Andy Griffin (sp) with Jimbo, and Bette Davis with Ps103, I actually hear thier voices in my head when reading post.
