None offended me lately, there have been some creepy ones. I have a reason to ask. you will know later.

Does it shape your view of the person, and how you respond to them in a post.
I think avatars tend to help shape my view of a person... only because here, sometimes there is not much to go on. The avatars don't shape how I respond to people in posts....
Do you pay attention to them?
Yes... I love the variety and talent I see here...
Do you find some offensive?
I have never been offended here... but I have seen one or two questionable ones in regards to the environment of these forums.

I am offended by the word "avatar" but I have not been offended by anyone's choice of pictorial representation. I would prefer the term icon, image or something without a Hindu etymology.
I sometimes notice icons, but rarely draw anything from them. I might notice them as pictures, but I don't really connect them with the person doing the posting. In fact, I don't often pay attention to who I am responding to, I just try to respond to what is said, rather than who is saying it, unless it's someone I've come to know well on the forum.
As for signatures, I rarely read those either. Nothing against them, I just don't take the time.

Oh, my other palidan avatar is the holy one... the blue goat girl...
I think the pictorial representations are interesting and fun... some people are very creative. I don't change mine very often because I get frustrated getting it down to a size that fits.
Let's face it, we so say atleast a little about myself by the pics and taglines and fonts we chose. Of course, I am not really short, muscular and hairy.

i would hope that, if people are offended by an avatar, they would pm that individual and engage them in some discussion about it. i would expect that most people aren't intentionally trying to offend anyone -- they have chosen their avatar for any number of reasons: personal, aesthetic, conceptual. i highly doubt there are too many people out to offend.

I agree. That and sig lines give a good indication if someone has a sense of humor or not(for example) and so it helps if something they've posted could be taken two ways. If you know they're a goofball by their avatar & sig then you can probably take what they've posted humorously.

If some stranger PM'd me and told me that my avatar, no matter what it was so long as it conformed to forum rules, offended them, I'd think they were really whacked.

I like looking at avatars on here because so many of the handles are similar, such as ILoveJesus or biblegurl (sorry if I used anyone's real handle). The pictures show personalities, like who is a crazy cat lady or who has the most well behaved kids (or at least the ones that clean up the best). I'm not offended by any avatars here, though I don't care for violent, sexy or judgmental images. The judgmental ones might offend me a little bit, such a an atheist symbol surrounded by a null symbol. However, I don't have a problem with allowing free expression here. I respond based on the content of the post, not the avatar.
Mine shows that I love my 'Dawgs and that I'm an animal lover as well. A bit silly sometimes too.

I always feel like I am talking to Andy Griffin (sp) with Jimbo, and Bette Davis with Ps103, I actually hear thier voices in my head when reading post.
