JimboFletch -> RE: What is the worst thing to happen to Christanity? (4/3/2008 4:41:23 PM)

I think there is a serious lack of spiritual discernment that is, in part, due to a lack of serious Bible study. I don't mean there hasn't been a lot sudy ABOUT the Bible with snippets of scripture thrown in to support someone's premise. A lack spiritual discernment opens people to influence by the most authoritative-sounding voice or one that sounds most appealing.

Oh man! For me that is a no brainer. It's when the clergy/laity distinction came into play. As a result church stopped being family, the believers lost their priestly calling, men replaced Christ as the Head, believers lost their authority and power, the church took several steps back into the Old Testament, leadership was no longer about servanthood, people stopped hearing God for themselves and took some of that affection that was for Christ and Christ alone and placed it upon leaders which is idolatry. Bottom line, it created a huge mess!

Looking at everyone's comments. It looks to me like things were great until people got involved.

If I had the least doubt about my comment, it's gone now. I just read in another thread when someone claims a lost friend died and stayed dead for 2 days. While they were there, they spent time talking with Jesus in heaven, who sent them back to earth. When the person revived, they were saved.

Only someone devoid of discernment and only the tiniest connection with scripture would swallow such a story or even entertain its veracity.

And the corrections started before Jesus was crucified!

Doghouse -> RE: What is the worst thing to happen to Christanity? (4/4/2008 5:51:57 PM)

The worst thing...?

Martin Luther, sowing the seeds of schism in his newly minted idea of religious thought, that says if you don't like Christianity, then on your own authority, start a new version of it. Copied by Henry the 8th, and everyone else soon after.

Even Luther is probably rolling over in his grave at the site of the Christian landscape as it has become today.

Dred -> RE: What is the worst thing to happen to Christanity? (4/5/2008 3:44:56 PM)

The rediscovering of the truth that we are saved through faith alone apart from works being tragically followed by the popular idea that proper faith is a list of correct opinions rather than trusting one's very life to the person who is both God and human. In this case, the letter of doctrine kills more surely than the letter of law since it does not even result in useful deeds.

Trusting your rescuer enough to do everything He tells you is much different than simply holding His correct resume.

This comment had me cracking up! Yep, people seem to be the problem of just about everything. Eliminate people and voila - no problems!

The question of what was wrong in the church was once asked of G.K. Chesterton and he replied, "Me. It begins with me." (maybe not the exact words but you get the gist of it.)

There's not just one wrong thing, but many. Of course some problems are far more damaging than others. I think the church soft ball team answer would be far at the bottom of the list. LOL! We could add to that, the church picnic where cholesterol and fat-laden food is consumed with total abandon of conscience. Pies, cakes, brownies, cookies, covered dishes of every kind and sort, soft drinks high in fructose, caffeinated coffee, the list is endless.

Stay away from those church picnics. They can be hazardous to one's health and well-being.

Actually, that point doesn't really make sense to me. People weren't involved in the book of Acts? The church and following Christ aren't some kind of noble utopian concept like Marxism that looked great on paper but then got messed up when people got involved. The beautiful description we see in Acts of the church in the Bible was entirely the actions of the people and their connection to their resurrected Lord. It wasn't a creed or a manifesto, it was people following a person who was raised from the dead. So that comment just doesn't make sense. It has always been nothing BUT people involved. No offense, but to me it's a cop-out to avoid taking a hard look at the real issues that have weakened the church and stolen the affections of people away from Christ.

Marcus. -> RE: What is the worst thing to happen to Christanity? (4/6/2008 1:14:26 PM)

I think it's the original sin coming alive in us. We all seek our own way and not His.

Oh, we say that he's all-powerful, but I don't think we believe it anymore. We think it is up to us to defend him against people who would attack him, we think it is up to us to figure everything out and boil it all down to a nice little formula, we think it is up to us to do all the right things in the right sequence so God can bless us, always afraid we might not be getting it right.

Yeah, that's a good one, too. Some of that is new in the past 2 centuries and some of that behavior is old - like believing it's up to us to do everything right or God won't bless us.

It seems like it all boils down to - us. We're the worst thing to happen to christianity - our pride, our 'knowledge', our ways and our thoughts.

Or someone who believes the first-hand account given by born again, spirit-filled christians who have been pastors for over 20 years and doesn't have the fearful, jaded perspective about God that some on these threads have.

And someone who understands that God is so powerful that He can raise anyone He pleases from the dead. I tend not to think like you - I believe that God is very powerful and alive today.

And by the way, I never said that he went to heaven, I said that Jesus showed him heaven. He also saw hell....just to put a bit more truth into your statements. Witnessed by dozens of people, too.

There's so much flesh on parade at the church softball game that I shiver to consider it! Taunting, intimidation, harassing--and then after the service, the game! Gorging saints high on junk food take the diamond to inflict physical and verbal pain on their brothers and sisters--under a cloak of fellowship! They mean fallow -ship, as in some of the seed fell on fallow ground!
There's more but I must stop there.

The horror...the horror....

I take it your team lost the game?

Amen!!!! Great responses, but they all show the biggest problem with CHRISTIANITY is "followers of JESUS or those who claim to be followers of JESUS."

That's my point exactly: the Gift of Discernment seems to be the single gift of the Holy Spirit absent from the WOFfers and other newly-enlightened groups who pride themselves on being the only ones in Christendom with any power and true knowledge of God.

It's like a mini-cessationist stand.

I disagree, I think discernment is lacked on both sides, from the hard core traditionalists to the Name it and claim it folks, I think the truth is in the middle.

Just working on my own study.

BTW, I wasn't talking about garden variety discernment, but the spiritual gift of discernment. They are different things.

Hello! The worst thing that has happened to the Church of God is the Dragon; Satan. From the fall at the tree in the garden of eden in disobedience to God, and continuing to our present era.

To me the WORST thing, worse than any false doctrine, worse than any schisms, is something that is causing us problems unto this day.

The merger between Christianity and Politics.

What say ye?

earthless -> RE: What is the worst thing to happen to Christanity? (4/8/2008 7:32:14 PM)

The Dragon.... I immediately thought of Bruce Lee. [8D]

Yes that would be nice so that we could be like the good Bereans who checked what Paul said against the scriptures. I would like to hear what these 12 people say and check it agains the scripture.

1)No longer fearing God.
2)Stop teaching the full Word of God.
3) Conforming to things of this world rather than transforming to the things of God.
