Maybe, but I still voted for Libbi.

I'm a big Susan Whisnant fan. It would be nice if she won.

If ever a group can be called "underrated", it's the Whisnants. You really don't hear them mentioned with other big name quartets, but they have a lot of chart success.

My vote would have to be the one I was listing to at the time. They are all good in their own way.

Hope no one takes this wrong, but I voted for Susan Peck Jackson, she is so deserving of this. Plus, I am sick to death of the same old, same old groups/artists winning every year, there should be a cut-off as to how many straight times 1 person/group can win...........I guess what I'm saying is, we have some new/old blood out there, and they deserve to be noticed and given credit for the Blessings they send out.

I voted for Susan too because I think she is very very good.

The thing about limiting the number of times a person can consecutively win an award is that the voting is entirely fan based. If the people like someone, they will keep voting for that person until someone comes along that they like better or that person either retires or moves on to Heaven. I think we might have had a thread on this very topic a long time ago.

We've had three different winners in the past four years, four in the past seven. Debra Talley won last year. Other than a 2003 win, she hadn't won since the mid-80s (when she won 4, for a total of 6).

Libbi Perry Stuffle won in 2006 and 2005, for a total of twice.

Sheri Easter won in 2004, 2002, and 2001, along with several times in the 80s.

Connie Hopper won her only three Alto awards in 2000, 1999, and 1998.

Sure, it's been between four ladies, but we have had some variety. There's been no clear, long-running favorite.

As far as I know, Anthony Burger was the only winner the Singing News did retire from winning the favorite Musician award. After he won 10 consecutive years he became ineligible and they renamed it the Anthony Burger award for a few years following.

Interestingly enough, Roger Bennett won it more consecutive times, but SN decided not to do name it after him.

He never became ineligble, though, after his consecutive wins. I think the few years they called it the Anthony Burger award (this was back in the '90s) was to honor Anthony since he could no longer win it.

Sorry, that was what I meant. I meant that they never either named it after him or made him ineligible.

Of course I meant trios, the piano player threw me off.

He threw you off the stage?

A mighty dangerous thing to do to a lawyer.

How was I to know that they expected money for the CDs?

I'm sure they said so during their product pitch.

Faye Thornell & Lily Fern Wetherford. These are the top two. I'll have to think on some others, here are two more, Connie Hopper and Debra Talley.

There is an alto here in Rossville, GA, Catrina Southard, who has had stints with The Hastys and with Heirline who is as good as anyone on that list. First time I heard her sing I was stunned at what an amazing voice she has. She is now singing with an area trio, called Shields of Faith and they are starting to really blossom into a really good ministry.

Well i luv the styles of many; however, I really like the quality of Susan Whisnant's vocals and stage presence. Libby Perry and Debra Talley are fantastic as well.

Lily Weatherford will always be my favorite alto but off the list Debra Talley is great.

You are absolutely right. Lily Fern has to be at the top of the list. Her ability to blend in with 3 male voices is second to none. In 1949, when I first heard Lily in California, I was an immediate fan.

She is. Roland Dry, Inspiration Baptist Church in Rock Hill, SC. He's been in the ministry all his life, a true man of God. I served as music director for him all of 2007. I still attend faithfully, sing in their quartet, and lead music, but I'm not "on staff" anymore.

Hard decision, but my vote has to go for Libbi. It's hard to forget the Perrys "Remembering the Happy Goodman's" project. Sounded just like Vestal. I also love Sheri Easter and though I can't stand the style of music the Tallys sing, I love Debras voice. I still have to go with Libbi, for Versatility. Seems she can do much more with her voice than some of the others.
