What is the Best Michael W. Smith album & why?

1. The Big Picture - I just picked up this cd and heard it in digital for the first time. Nice cd with some great rock songs. John Potoker did a great prod on this one.
2. Eye to I - Great cd that doesn't fit the later electronica pop format he would take on later albums.


Anybody else want to weigh in that has listened to "All of Smitty's " work?

Note: This is not to slam any of Smitty's other great work it's just an opinion on the cd's we've enjoyed the most.

My favorites are:

1. The Second Decade: A compilation made for his 20-year mark as a musc artist

2. Worship: A great, quiet collection of praise songs

3. Freedom: Some instrumentals, he is a surprisingly good composer.

Even though all his albums through Eye to I were consistantly good, I still love the first two albums the most. There's just something about those early songs and hearing him develop as a song writer that I really enjoy.

You know when i bought "the big picture" I also bought "MWS 2" at the same time. I was so excited but you know what, it didn't hold up. I was very dated production wise. Now I agree there are great songs on it and I'll still listen to it but man put in the next cd "the big picture" in his catalogue and it was like going from a handglider to a shutttle launch. it's was a noticible step up in production and quality. On the technical side like Amy Grants "Age to Age", "mws 2" is very noisy which the digital format really shows. Lots of hiss and noise , i guess from those old analog recorders they used. Still though a good album over all... just dated.

Quoted for agreement. I also like "Live the Life". Just good music with a variety of interesting styles.

For me, Eye to I is my favorite. There are a lot of powerful sounding songs on it. There almost seems to be a heavy metal influence on that album.

I really like Go West Young Man, too. Great pop record!

I don't have the record, but whichever one has the song Rockettown on it is OK in my book. That is a killer song!

I believe thats "The Big Picture" IIRC. "Eye 2 I" is my favorite also. Then "Live the Life" then "The Big Picture".

i 2 (eye) was a favorite of mine growing up. Now of course I listen to it and it's a great big hunk of 80s cheese, but still is great. Ashton and The Throne still gives me goosebumps!

Both Worship cd's, then "The First Decade". His last new release, Stand I think, started out strong but the songs get progressively quieter. By the end I've lost interest.

So true! DH picks on me endlessly when I pull out my old CDs. But then again, he still had a Tiffany cassette when we married.

I love The Live Set because it's Rocket Town and the previous 2's stuff. Plus it reminds me of concerts I saw of his. The Big Picture and Eye 2 i round out the top 3. I have yet to get the Worship cds, but enjoy them on the radio.

I first saw MWS right before my freshman year of college at Disneyland. It was so fun because it was at their dance arena. During college, I saw him a couple times with DC Talk opening and the last concert I went to was when my wife and I were dating on a Christmas tour with Amy Grant and CeCe Winans. That was AWESOME!!!

Hehe...I don't really listen to MWS, so whatever album works for me. I probably like his song "Rockettown" most, though.

Good call on that - I had forgotten about the live album. I got to see him 4 or 5 times during this phase of his career, and always enjoyed it. Top notch band, and (for a Christian tour) really advanced set design and lighting. Great shows. There is also a decent concert video ("MWS In Concert") which I wish would get re-released on DVD - at least I don't think it's ever come out on DVD.

Totally agree. Chris Rodriguez, Mark Heimmerman (sp?), David Huff, and several of his other band members were fantastic backing him up and have had successful careers of their own in CCM.

I've been a long time MWS fan, so here are my top 3 albums
1 Live the Life: memorable tunes and great writing
2. The Big Picture: Rockettown is one of my favorite MWS songs.
3. Eye 2 i
His recent Cd's have been good but nothing that comes close to Live the Life.

1-Change Your World
2-Go West Young Man
3-The Big Picture

Now Live The Life would probably be on there too, that is if I ever bought it and listened to it through and though.

"Eye To I"....great music, great lyrics. My personal favorite.

I remember the video for "Secret Ambition", it was very powerful!
