The neighbor came over last night and told Brandon, "Oh, yeah, water comes out of our drain, too, it's no big deal." and then he went home. So I called the landlord and he said he is actually a member of a plumbing club and he'll call this morning and put us at the top of the list and they will come take care of it.

I keep waking up early no matter how late I go to bed. It is very frustrating.

Sounds like a problem at the street is affecting them too.

Don't worry, Jennifer. That doesn't necesarily mean anything. We will all keep praying for a good job for you. How far from graduating from college were you when you stopped? Didn't you say your major was accounting?

I was an accounting major, then I was a spanish major, and then I just took classes here and there trying to finish my AA. I had about five classes left, but after credits transfer down here from the other two schools, it may be more. It'll be a year, at the least, before I have my AA.

Jennifer--have you looked into grants? Seems to me you would be the ideal candidate--single mom looking to finish a degree.

I don't think grants cover living expenses. I have heard of people who had enough 'left over' but we are talking at least $1200 a month 'left over' in order for us to continue living in this house, driving the van (not replacing or fixing it), eating, etc. I think those that had that kind of leftover from their grants were single and able to live very cheaply. I used to get pell grants and there was extra, but not that much, especially after books.

Jen, my SIL gets cost-of-living student loans. Not a grant, but a loan, which she will have to pay back at some point, but once she is a nurse, that shouldn't be too hard. I wonder if you have something like that available, or if you would even want to do that?? Could you qualify for HUD and get help with housing and utility costs while you finish your degree?

I will not take any loans. I cannot tell what the future will bring and if I will be able to pay them off without shorting the kids something. Also, I know people who have been paying for decades on their student loans, and people who were turned down for missionary work because of them.

As for assistance while I finish my degree--it's only an AA. Realistically I would have to have a degree beyond that for it to make that much of a difference. I was already planning to take a couple courses each quarter next year via distance ed, like I did in Yakima, while working, which is not that hard for me (unless it's Asian Art History, lol, I flunked that one!), and I can still finish in about a year. It isn't a big deal. It isn't like having an AA, instead of my 77 quarter (3.43 GPA) and 25 semester (3.76 GPA) credits on my resume, is going to be a deal breaker.

My mom is having one of her dogs, Beemer, put to sleep this afternoon. I knew it was coming but it is still hard on all of us. The kids don't know yet.

Makes total sense. I just didn't know if you thought it might be worth it to look into. Seems that it's not for you.

We went to say goodbye to Beemer...and brought him home, instead. This dog is clearly miserable but we don't know if it's physical or emotional. The other dog is very abusive. So, we took him home to see how he'd do for a few hours. The cats are locked in the basement so that they cannot interfere. So far, though, he just sits next to Brandon on the couch and whimpers. But since it's a new place to be, he might have just not adjusted yet. I hate this! Part of the problem is that my mom is about to leave town, and so some sort of decision needs to be made right away.

Thank you. I didn't know how much I loved this dog until today. I know he's just a dog...but really, he's part of the family.

Jennifer, I'm not much into animals, but even I understand the value of animals in a family. I cried when our dog died and still miss having him around. He's been gone 13 years. And I don't really like dogs, but I sure liked him, because he was a part of our family and was my protector, when Doug worked swing shift and was gone at night. He was a lovely dog who really stood by my side and watched out for me.

I understand. My mom is pretty upset and the reason we are doing this is that she just can't live with herself if she isn't sure it's necessary to have him put down. I am thinking it will be, though, because he's still acting like he's in a LOT of pain. He doesn't relax anymore these days, and he always looks scared. Brandon is so good with animals, so he's sitting with him, but Beemer still isn't happy.

I like Beemer too, and I only spent 24 hours with him. Give him a smooch for me, OK? I'll pray that you figure out quickly what needs to be done.

I am sitting here talking myself out of going shopping. It's not that I don't want to go shopping (well, ok, part of it is) but more that I looked at my bank balance. At the moment it would really not be smart to buy clothes I don't really need, and I went through my stuff and believe I can put together a nice outfit with what I have. It will mean black dress pants, which probably isn't "right" for a spring wedding, but somehow I doubt that my wearing black pants will totally ruin my friend's day. I have an aqua shell, and I even found the sweater that goes with it - very much like the one you found for me, Jen, but a different color. I think it will do.

You knew I was gonna get out of it, didn't you?

Yes, indeedy. Aqua sounds terrific. Is Ash gonna wear her new dress? you would almost match. Did she ever find shoes for that one?

I think black works year-round as long as you pair it up with something bright Sounds like you have a winner!

Ash isn't going. She will be working at the daycare. No, she didn't find shoes yet - looked in a couple of places but didn't find anything she really liked. At some point we will probably end up at the mall but I have to wait until I do not have such a bad case of Day Before Payday Syndrome.

Did you give Beemer another dose of aspirin?

He hasn't had one since yesterday. I didn't want to give him any when I brought him home because we wanted to see how he did. He is clearly in pain-yelping, this odd gasping scream type of thing, and shaking. But I did not bring the baby aspirin with me. Mom was going to take a nap-she didn't sleep all night-and call me back in a couple of hours. We are halfway through that time. I think we can take care of him until then. I don't think I own any aspirin, not even stuff I could cut up.

Poor little Beemer. Has your mom had him to the vet to see if there's anything they can do, or does she not want to go that route (and I understand if she doesn't - we have limits on what we can reasonably do for our critters too)?

She had him in and so far they can't tell her what is wrong. I think it's arthritis or something, since moving is obviously uncomfortable and when Brandon palpated him he really fussed at being touched in the hip area. I suppose it could be cancer, as well. In any case, she feels that since he is 9 years old, greying and all, and very unhappy, and Sadie treats him so badly...well, honestly, I really think this is best, and I am very glad we brought him home because I have no doubts now. My mom needs that assurance.

We are about to have two of our homeschooled neighbor boys come over for a science experiment with Perry. We are going to do some chemical reactions with tea, vinegar, steel wool and hydrogen peroxide. Fun!

Jen, praying about the dog and they are part of the family!

Ds went to a birthday party at the bowling alley. I was gonna take pictures of all the kids bowling but the budlight sign on the wall would have gotten into the pic, too!
Hmm, wonder if anyone has ever invented a christian bowling alley without a beer sign or bar? Well, it could have a bar with fruit smoothies and stuff like that.

I tried to get one here yesterday but the library computer wouldn't let me on. It said it had found a "banned phrase" on the site. Weird, right?

Going to read some posts.
