ORIGINAL: Tinkerbell_ Kyoudai and I are slowly but surely getting back in sync with each other. He says we were out because we weren't doing a lot of Bible studies and studying scripture together. Men. quote:
We're going to be teaching on faith so if anyone has any great ideas for me, please don't hesitate to send them my way! We have an outline we're going to try to use, but like I said, anything different would be appreciate and surely implemented. A good start would be Hebrews 11. There are a lot of stories brought out in that chapter that can be explored as supporting scripture. Another good start would be Philippians 1:6. You could use Matthew 1 as supporting scripture. Let me know if I can help in any way. Yeah, and you can start with defining "faith" biblically. Define the bible BY the bible. Last Sunday my pastor said something from the pulpit, in front of a bunch of new baby Christians, that made me mad. He said: "Salvation plus works equals faith". Yes, ladies and gentlemen, that's what he said. Yes, I took him to task for it later. No, it didn't do any good. shallbe edited for typo.

Ya know... I can see why he said what he said. He butchered it big time IMHO. Salvation comes by grace through faith. But faith must have evidence. To just say, "I have faith in Jesus" and not have any change in your life is not correct. So I think I understand what he was trying to say. But he should have thought about that a little more before he said it.

I agree James, it is a natural result of being saved. Which reminds me, where are my works these days? Then I reminded myself that I am saved by grace and not by works. Ok, this is all an oxymoron. Ok, I can think of one works that I did this week, but now I corrupted it instead?

But he should have thought about that a little more before he said it. I questioned him about it later, Dude...I asked him if what he meant was that salvation plus works were the EVIDENCE of faith. He, of course, answered that that was what he meant. But when I encouraged him that clarifying that for the sake of the baby Christians would be important, he shut down on me...he has no intention of clearing it up. I don't understand that. Interestingly, the Sunday before, he preached that God saw the potential in the disciples and that was why Jesus called them...for example God "looked down" and saw that Peter was bold, and decided to call him as a disciple. So patently wrong. God CREATED Peter. God CREATED him with the qualities for being a disciple, because He created him TO BE a disciple... The Beau actually confronted him about it in the hand-shaking line. He did the same thing to him...shut down on him and only answered "uhummm, uhummm". Frustrating. shallbe

ORIGINAL: armydude If I may offer a small bit of advice. Run. Run fast. Run far. Thanks for the advice. Believe me, I would like to. However, several things make it very wise to stay where we are just at the moment: 1) I direct the music at this church. The $500+ that it brings in each month is somewhat vital to my goals of supporting my family and getting through school. In addition, I am learning a lot and it will look good on a resume. 2) My aged parents attend here. It makes them very happy that we also attend here. 3) It is close-by. Any other church that would come close to meeting our theological standards would likely be quite a drive...no less than an hour. Hard to be involved in a church from that far away. 4) The pastor's heart is not mailicious. It's just lazy. He is not manipulative or hateful. This is different from our last church. We may hate his preaching and feel it necessary to correct it often, but he is safe. We were badly burned in our last church. Safety, just at the moment, trumps satisfaction. 5) Our membership there will not last forever. The moment I am free to seek and find a decent job once I have my degree, we will feel free (assuming God's leading doesn't change at that time) to look for a more appropriate church. In the meantime, we know of at least one ministry that is working toward getting a church started nearby that will meet our theological standards. I can wait. Meanwhile, I'll keep correcting him as meekly and lovingly as I can. And since my daddy is chairman of deacons, I may start making a few subtle hints about the theological imbalance being preached. shallbe
