Hi fellow Christians,

I have a few questions in my life right now and really need some help. I am a guitarist and I was about to purchase a guitar pedal the other day. At first, I struggled with buying it because someone on a music forum (Harmony Central) said it was blasphemous. That freaked me out. Then I asked a Christian forum and they all told me it is NOT blasphemous against The Holy Spirit. Here's an excerpt from my word file. I copied and pasted it from a Christian thread:

"There is nothing wrong with using guitar pedals (whether fuzz or looper, etc), correct?"
- Correct. There is nothing wrong with it.

"what does guitar pedals have to do with blasphemy?"
- Absolutely nothing. That's ridiculous. It's a sound, not moral or immoral action.

Now here is when the problem occured again. I read, "there's nothing wrong with it' and then I read 'blasphemy' and I thought of something bad. Thinking as IF there's nothing wrong with blasphemy.

But, blasphemy is wrong.

When I read 'there's nothing wrong with it' from the excerpt, I actually wanted to think 'there's nothing wrong with guitar pedals'.


So here are the questions that came from this situation.

1) If an individual thinks it is blasphemous against The Holy Spirit to purchase items, does it make it true?

2) If someone thought it was blasphemous against The Holy Spirit to purchase stuff and then goes onto purchase stuff, did they commit the unforgivable sin?

3) Is the unforgivable sin different for everyone? For example, if a person thinks the unpardonable sin for them is drinking and another person thinks it is homosexuality. Or is the unforgivable sin the same for people or all ages and genders?

4) What exactly is the unpardonable sin described in the book of Matthew? How does one avoid that sin in modern day society?

I think it's obvious I am unsure about the unpardonable sin and really need some Christian advice and information.

Help appreciated. I do not want to commit the unpardonable sin and hope this forum can be really helpful for me.

Sorry, your question about the buying of a guitar pedal being unpardonable seemed rather flippant hence my thinking you were a troll.

The only unpardonable sin isn't a single act, but it is a living a lifestyle to the point one's heart cannot be penetrated by the Holy Spirit. A single sin will not do this, but a constant rebuffing of the HS leading will come to a point where one is imune from His call. The best advice is to avoid even starting on this journey.

the blasphemy of the HOLY SPIRIT can not be forgiven by the HOLY SPIRIT, not by JESUS, and not by GOD the FATHER. it has to be forgiven by the person you committed the blasphemy against. the work of the HOLY SPIRIT is to encourage you and the blasphemy interferes with HER work. it is very important that you seek forgiveness and be reconciled with this person so the work of the HOLY SPIRIT will not be interfered with.

It's not what the person thinks that is important

It's not a particular sin, but a lifestyle of hardening one's heart4)

Avoid hardening the heart. Study God's Word. Stay close to Him in Prayer. Develop Godly friendships. Stay in awe of what He is doing,
Think less of yourself and more of others. Avoid things/people that draw your heart away from God. Develop a childlike faith.

Why would anyone even consider purchasing a guitar peddle a sin or offense against God. Which of the commandments have you broken. People who don't know their Bible thoroughly will think things such as cabbage patch dolls are evil, or watching the Lord of the Rings will posses you with a demon. If you have a good knowledge of the Bible then the world cannot contaminate your thinking. Knowledge of God's word protects you from the way the world thinks. If you brought some porn, now that would grieve the Holy Spirit. How is buying a guitar peddle making you sin? Thoughts like that are just silly.
Young Christians are more likely to carry around many silly fears about what is wrong, that's why we need to know our Bibles. Is what you are doing, harming your neighbor? Is what you are doing a sexual sin and dishonoring the Temple of God. If not then we are allowed to enjoy our hobbies and interests for these can be good things that occupy ourselves with and keep us out of mischief. If you stole the guitar peddle then that would be a sin.

Here is a verse for you.

If our heart accuses us, God is greater than our heart and knows all things. 1 John 3:20

You really need to explain what you mean here Imwal...what you have stated really doesn't make a lot of sense.

And just to make a point...I don't thing the Holy Spirit is a HER either. To make such a statement might be getting close to blasphemy.

Here is a straight forward answer to your question:

One of the jobs of the Holy Spirit is to convict the world of sin. To blasheme against the Holy Spirit is for unbelievers to walk away from Christ's offer of salvation.

If you have accepted Christ, you are forgiven for ALL of your sins, past, present and future. There is not unpardonable sin you, as a Christian, can possibly commit. Only unbelievers commit the 'unpardonable sin' by not asking for pardon.

Guitar900, what scripture did this person use to support that "buying a guitar pedal" is blasphemy the Holy Spirit? Blasphemy means to speak injurious words against. also it means to attributed the work of the Lord to the devil. The very fact you are conceerned about whether you blasphemed the Holy Ghost is a good indication that you did not blaspheme the Holy Ghost. The doesn't speak of buying items or anything like that as blasphemy of the Holy Ghost. I would confront this person and ask them what scriptures substatiates their argument and lovingly refute them using the scriptures. Read the Gospels again and see what context it was used. Mark 3:28-29. Look up the word blasphemy in the Strong's concordance. Godhead gave you a very good verse to read as well. Be encouraged!! Bob97, Amen the Holy Spirit is NOT a female!

What is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit? Lets look at the passage in context;

(Mat 12:22) Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.

(Mat 12:23) And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?

(Mat 12:24) But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.

(Mat 12:25) And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:

(Mat 12:26) And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?

(Mat 12:27) And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges.

(Mat 12:28) But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.

(Mat 12:29) Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.

(Mat 12:30) He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.

So what happened that brought on this revelation that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit cannot be forgiven;

(Mat 12:24) But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.

Attributing something done by the Holy Spirit to something done by the devil is what "Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit" is.

Pretty plain and straight forward.

That's it in a nutshell. It's not a lifestyle, it's not purchasing something that might offend the Holy Spirit.

It's giving Satan credit for the Holy Spirit's work.

Sure. In response, let me first point out that from a historic perspective the Pharisees mentioned by Matthew militantly hated Jesus and attributed His miracles to Beelzebub, the prince of demons.

Unlike those who are afraid they have committed the unforgivable sin, the Pharisees were totally unconcerned about Christ's forgiveness. Instead, with premeditation and persistence, they willfully blasphemed the Holy Spirit's testimony that Christ was the Son of the living God. It is crucial to recognize that the unforgivable sin is not a single act but a continuous, ongoing rejection leading to dying having rejected the grace of God.

Furthermore, those who have committed the unpardonable sin have no godly regrets. As the apostle Paul emphasizes in the book of Romans, they not only continue in their evil ways but approve of others who do so as well (Romans 1:32).

Conversely, "godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation" (2 Corinthians 7:10). Sorrow for sin and the desire for Christ's forgiveness is proof positive that you have not rejected the Savior of your soul.

Never forget that three times Peter denied his Lord with vile oaths. Yet, Jesus not only forgave him, but his confession, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16) became the cornerstone of the Christian church.

Finally, the Bible consistently teaches that those who spend eternity separated from God do so because they willingly, knowingly, and continuously reject the gospel.

John refers to this as the "sin that leads to death" (1 John 5:16) in the sense that those who refuse forgiveness through Christ will spend eternity separated from His grace and love.

Be assured that those who sincerely desire God's forgiveness can be absolutely certain that they will never be turned away.

Doug, fighting God and even hating followers of Christ is not the same as Jesus' definition of blaspheming the Holy Spirit. It's not even "garden variety" blaspheming. If the dead are raised, the blind see, the deaf hear, and the lame made whole through the power of the Holy Spirit and anyone says it is accomplished by Satan, that is the unpardonable sin. It was defined only by Jesus.

That's very popular with some unlearned evangelists and a number of armchair theologians, but it is simply not what Jesus said it is.

The unsaved, according to Jesus, are already condemned. So rejecting salvation just keeps them on the same path.

The unpardonable sin, according to Jesus, is attributing the work of God the Holy Spirit to Satan.

let me give an example of the blasphemy of the HOLY SPIRIT that can not be forgiven by GOD. one day when studying at ncsu i noticed that the young man across from me had huge legs. i spontaneously said "what lamb shops". this was a blasphemy of the HOLY SPIRIT. he became very upset and complained to the university. i immediately apologized profusely and sincerely. 2 days later i wrote a essay about this, apologizing in the essay, and tried to give it to him, still apologizing. he apparently never accepted my apologies. i did the best i could. i was disciplined by a lady in the department he worked in. i was not allowed to go to this study room anymore. i think it was overly emphasized but that's life. i hope i have learned a lesson from this experience.

the HOLY SPIRIT is the BRIDE OF CHRIST. a few scholars have remarked that they have noticed a feminity in the HOLY SPIRIT. our dear friend john the baptist said he was the friend of the BRIDEGROOM. there is no way i would claim to be the BRIDE. i aint no prophet either.
