TomTurn -> Dislike their name? (4/14/2008 9:06:54 PM)

Have you ever dated or wanted to date someone yet disliked their name and what did you do about it?

Maybe that is stupid to some of you and maybe others are willing to admit it.

My best friend got married almost 20 years ago but did not like her intendeds last name. They legally changed it to his middle name. Sometimes I can't remember what the original one was.

No offense to ladies with the names.

Do not like

Christina or Tina
Kimberly or Kim
Susie or Sue (but like Susan)
Kathy or Cathy

And so far have not been faced with it in someone I like

I did not know you were talking about first names. No, I have never encountered this.

TomTurn -> RE: Dislike their name? (4/14/2008 10:13:15 PM)

Can be a last name but as a guy I know if a gal gets married to me she will take my last name, so my focus was on first names.

John_O -> RE: Dislike their name? (4/14/2008 10:21:12 PM)

Most of the names I don't like are almost never used anymore. Agnes, Berta, Helga, those sorts of things.

It's odd though how meeting someone you especially don't like can sour you on the name itself. But then you meet others with that same name and it gets redeemed.

Prairiehiker -> RE: Dislike their name? (4/14/2008 10:26:40 PM)

I have such a unique "christian" last name that if I ever get married, I'd like to keep it. LOL! My name and last name, put together, are spanish and very very catholic. And dare I say, my whole name sounds very virginal (oooops....can i say that in this forum?)

I can't say there's a man's name that I would not like. Well, I don't want to marry a man with a last name like Dahmer, or Hitler.

ladioffaith -> RE: Dislike their name? (4/14/2008 10:38:08 PM)

About the only last name I really dislike is my own.

A co-worker who had the same last name as mine thinks she subconciously chose her husband because of his unique last name, which has 17 letters in it. Until they married, there were only 7 people in the United States with that last name ... all of them members of his immediate family.

I have issues with people adding an A to my first name because I am not named after a pagan goddess!

I try not to hold people's given name against them. It's not their fault.

J3jamie -> RE: Dislike their name? (4/14/2008 10:52:49 PM)

I have this issue with men named James or Jim. I hate the thought of having it too cute that we would be James and Jamie or Jim and Jamie or even worse yet: Jamie and Jamie.

I blame my mother for this. LOL

Tinkerbell_ -> RE: Dislike their name? (4/14/2008 11:48:51 PM)

Before I got married, my ex and I watched a lot of The Wedding Singer. I always giggled at "Julia Goolia".

Then I got to looking at how my name (nickname at least) would look with his name. *gulp* It had the same rhyme sound to it.

Sooo...I guess I don't like names that rhyme with my first name. [:D]

I mean, think of poor Marcy Darcy. It's a sad life with a rhyming name. [&o]

OneOfHisJewels -> RE: Dislike their name? (4/15/2008 2:33:07 AM)

One of the reasons I didn't marry the man I almost did when I was very young was because I did not like his name, first, middle or last, AND he was a jr. I don't like jr's. Kids should be given their own name, I think. Anyway, if I had used that guy's last name with my last name as the middle name, it would have said something weird. I don't want to say his last name, my last name, or the funny combination on the public forum, but the curious may pm me.

I agree with that! My name is SO incredibly common, it's insane. The only reason I'm "different" is because of my middle name - thankfully my parents didn't go along with the traditional Lisa Marie (as in Presley) that was SO popular at the time. I want something unique.

CoeurdeLeon_ -> RE: Dislike their name? (4/15/2008 8:10:12 AM)

I've never disliked anyone else's name. But I have had guys tell me that they have an issue with mine.[8|]

To that I say....Next!!![;)]

cammo2006 -> RE: Dislike their name? (4/15/2008 8:39:15 AM)

Yeah, things like names are to me a non-sequitur. At worst, they can be changed.

Tinkerbell_ -> RE: Dislike their name? (4/15/2008 8:58:24 AM)

Well, I don't like my first name so I use a nickname. *shrug* Same goes for anyone who's name I don't like. I dated a guy named 'Wayne' one time. I didn't like it on him so I always used his middle name, Matt. LOL! His family would always look at me funny but he loved it.

I also knew a guy who didn't like my nickname, so he shortened it...LOL. Odd shortening a nickname. [&:]

iwillfearnoevil -> RE: Dislike their name? (4/15/2008 9:09:44 AM)

wow this was a really interesting thread. i don't think i have any major biases, there might be a few names i like less than others but figure i'd probably like the name on the right person :]

trainfan -> RE: Dislike their name? (4/15/2008 10:59:58 AM)

I have never had a problem with someones name. Their name was given to them by their parents for whatever reason be it b/c they liked it, to honor someone in the family or b/c they though it was cute. Anyway it is their name and really has nothing to do with them as a person or how I view them.

LOL! Exactly!

WaitingforBoaz -> RE: Dislike their name? (4/15/2008 11:29:06 AM)

My problem is with extremely common names.
Hubbys name was John, his dad was John, I have 2 brother-in-laws named John, And several uncles named John. If I had had a boy there would have been alot of presure from the family to name him John also. Fortunately, God took care of that and gave me 3 girls.

A friend of mine married a guy who was was a third (III) She was told right off, that if she had a boy, he would have to have the family name and become a fourth (IV) She did have a boy and named him the family name...here's the funny thing. Not one of them goes by the name. All 4 generations used nicknames. Now that is weird.

That's just because John is such a totally awesome name.

I've known a few families like that.

I kind of like the concept of having a III or a IV but I don't care at all for Jr. Problem is in order to see the III you've almost got to see the JR. (Unless you skip a generation and live a long time)

ladioffaith -> RE: Dislike their name? (4/15/2008 2:06:12 PM)

My dad was a Jr. and refused to give his name to my brother for fear he'd be called "the turd."
