PHOENIX, AZ – Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio terminated a deputy cadet on Wednesday for racist remarks and repeated displays of cultural ignorance and insensitivity just one day before graduation.

The firing was ordered when an investigation showed one of the 34 deputy cadets scheduled to graduate on Thursday made racially derogatory remarks about citizens.

The cadet used the “N” word on two separate occasions to refer to individuals, in front of other law enforcement cadets.

The incidents came to the Sheriff’s attention over a week ago.

“Given our need to fill deputy vacancies, firing someone who is just hours away from graduating and otherwise ready for duty, is a disappointment,” Arpaio says. “We had a big investment in this cadet. But, we have an infinitely larger investment in the community we serve. While terminating this cadet may seem regrettable, it is this type of behavior that increases the risks of racial insensitivity and racial bias. Law enforcement is a serious job with serious consequences and there is no room for racism and bigotry.”

The fired cadet was one of 34 men and women scheduled to graduate from the Sheriff’s Training Academy.

Maybe the sheriff saw more than was mentioned. Firing seems a little much , but this cadet may have been a lawsuite waiting to happen?

You are right that he was likely to be a lawsuit waiting to happen, but I really don't think that it is "a little much" to fire him when his job would have been to protect the people he is prejudiced against. I agree with Jimbo here.

Since the investment in the cadet was greater than zero, and the investment in the community is finite, this statement is demonstrably false.

So the possible financial outlay from a lawsuit bothers you more than his overt racism? I'd scratch my head but I don't have very much hair left.[sm=sadquestion.gif]

This sheriff is the most law-and-order conservative you will find. Cannot fathom why conservatives would question his integrity given his record.

Police officers are not paid to make those judgements.

The N word is related to slavery and the degradation of African Americans and in another thread you mentioned an aversion to such an institution. Or are you running for President too?

And I am just an American who believes America is made of of immigrants from all over the world and EVERY ONE OF THEM is a person deserving my respect of them and for their culture. Except for the Native Americans (who immigrated via land bridge) everyone is descended from someone from somewhere else.

Maybe you need to come to LA and visit the Museum of Tolerance!
