I just made an appointment for my very first mammogram. I won't be going until June, but I'm just wondering what to expect?

How much does it hurt?

Not much ...

Does it hurt more or less depending on your breast size?

Not sure...both breasts are the same size [8D]

Do you have to remove all your clothes?

Just top & bra. Put on this home sewn poncho. It was cold in the room. Sat on the couch till she knocked.

How long does it take?

20 minutes ... The tech does handle the breast to place them & then to smooth out skin so there is no pinching. She also had me hold my head a certain way & place my hand out towards the machine.

How old were you when you had your first one?

49 ... was sent a letter saying I needed additional tests. Chiropractor warned me that since I breastfed that some blockage may show up. May have moved with the right one. Haven't heard from doc yet. Should probably call.

Lady_Bear -> RE: Mammograms (6/17/2008 9:47:46 AM)

[:)] ... I have mine every year ... in NOVEMBER like CLOCK WORK !! It means more to me since last year because my YOUNGER SISTER back home found out she has BREAST CANCER and has gone through a lot over the last year ... CHEM), RADIOATION & so she has lost all her hair and is doing a bit better but still she has a long road of healing to go through !!

So, ldies do not put this off ... and the previous post has said

* It does not hurt at all
* Most insurance companys pick it up 100%
* You get your results back within days ... at least we do here !!

So, go out and do it !!

flowerz -> RE: Mammograms (6/17/2008 12:13:34 PM)

My doctor's office just called. I have to go in so now I'm terrified.

Lady_Bear -> RE: Mammograms (6/18/2008 6:46:10 AM)

RELAX ... FLOWERZ !!

No need to be afarid the nurses will talk you right through it !! All, you have to do is RELAX !! All will be ok and we are here praying for you that all goes well !!

flowerz -> RE: Mammograms (6/18/2008 11:37:06 AM)

I'm not terrified about the actual mammogram, that has already took place. I'm worried because they called me to come in about the results, which they only do if something showed up. Sorry, I wasn't very clear in my post.

Brandy -> RE: Mammograms (6/18/2008 2:18:22 PM)

flowerz I got that call at 18.

18!!!

It turned out to be denser tissue from being very fibrocystic and an ultrasound cleared it up.

It was the scariest phone call/experience of my life to that point. 18!!!

I live in the UK and we get free mammograms and smear, so there is no financial incentive, other than what the government pay the doctors for doing it (which isn't a lot).

Most states offer free Mammogram programs here, so it shouldn't be a financial concern in the US either.

In some ways I can understand about the smear test, given in the US they seem to have yearly ones.

There are somewhat new guidelines that only recommend them every 2-3 years if you have a history of being monogamous and having "clean" pap results. I have abnormal cells(stage 2 precancerous ones) so I go every 3-4 months for paps. It's certainly not that bad and I don't see the big deal about having them done, the whole process takes like 30 seconds.

As for the OP, I have no advice but I will certainly be praying for you results. I know how nerve wracking the waiting can be, or getting called with bad results.

Abbreviated -> RE: Mammograms (6/18/2008 5:55:34 PM)

GO for 2nd mam tomorrow AM with a diagnostic consult. Should know results by 10 AM.

flowerz -> RE: Mammograms (6/19/2008 1:17:12 PM)

Brandy, that must have been awful.

I have to have further tests, but my doctor said most of the time it is not cancer. I posted about this in the prayer & praise section, and I don't think I'm allowed to post about this in two places, so I think I have to stop posting here now.

I think it would be fine for you to update us here as well. You are not allowed to start the same thread in two different places, but I don't think anyone is going to flag you for spamming for posting the same info on two threads, especially when one of them is not just about you.

agapetos -> RE: Mammograms (6/19/2008 6:42:53 PM)

I second what Catherine said. There should be no problem with posting in either thread about updates. I've seen others post the identical post in different threads because it was relevant to both. I've often mentioned something in my blog and in other threads too.

I had to go back after my mammogram (and I agree, it's not on my list of favourite things, but nore is having a smear test, and I've just received a letter reminding me I need to have one) too. The decided in the end it was fatty tissue, which is perfectly normal. I had a fine needle aspiration at some point too.

flowerz -> RE: Mammograms (7/3/2008 11:36:19 AM)

I had a second mammogram on Monday, and I have an appointment for an ultrasound later this month. I wish I could find out the results sooner. I'm not too worried, but still, it would be a relief to find out I'm healthy.

You can post in here and in the prayer thread. Women with time constraints may read the prayer thread than threads throughout the folder. It's ok. :)

Plus no one can respond or give you encouragement in the prayer thread.

Did the dr tell you what the concern is? calcium deposits? fibroids?

flowerz -> RE: Mammograms (7/25/2008 12:54:58 PM)

Yesterday I had my ultrasound test. I won't find out the results until next week. The ultrasound seemed to take so long, and at times I could see the screen and what she was doing. Before yesterday and my ultrasound I was feeling quite unworried about it all. Now I have an awful feeling about what the results will show.

Kath -> RE: Mammograms (7/25/2008 4:42:07 PM)

{{{Flowerz}}} I know it's hard, but try not to anticipate.

What was it about the ultrasound that has now made you uneasy?

flowerz -> RE: Mammograms (7/25/2008 5:18:31 PM)

It took longer then I expected, both the ultrasound and the time she took talking to the radiologist (or whoever) afterwards. Just seeing the dark spots appear on the monitor also made me feel uneasy, even though I know they may be harmless. I know I shouldn't worry.

agapetos -> RE: Mammograms (7/25/2008 7:12:00 PM)

It can look weird when you've never had an ultrasound before. Just because you see 'dark spots' doesn't mean there's anything to worry about. I had a bunch of ultrasounds in '06 and she always spent forever discussing it.

flowerz -> RE: Mammograms (7/26/2008 2:13:14 PM)

I've had ultrasounds for pregnancies but not for anything else. Thanks for your encouragement.

Memaw. -> RE: Mammograms (8/8/2008 8:49:14 AM)

Any news?

flowerz -> RE: Mammograms (8/8/2008 1:13:28 PM)

I have to have a biopsy, so I started a new thread. I don't have a date for it yet.

agapetos -> RE: Mammograms (11/13/2008 5:28:49 AM)

Heard on the news there's a new gizmo out (in my neck of the woods anyhow) to do mammograms. It's much better than the current system. Depends on radar instead of xrays and ultrasounds. Uses a cup too instead of squeezing the breast tissue. Is said to be far more reliable. When I've sorted my puter out I'll find some more info on it unless someone has beaten me too it.

Allyamberly -> RE: Mammograms (11/30/2008 3:08:47 AM)

This is my first post here so forgive me if I don't know what I'm doing exactly. I was 'called back' last Monday, a week after my (second consecutive year of having a) digital mammogram. Another mammogram: a 'Mag View' and Spot Compression and and Ultrasound are indicated. The Breast Center cannot get me in until Dec. 18, so about a month from the time of the initial mammogram. The wait is way too much for me to tolerate but there's nothing that I can do about it except for the little praying that I am able to do and all the worrying which I do so well. I am paralyzed with anxiety and fear. I have the radiologist's report in hand, have looked up everything related to his findings online . . . I'm also an RN, although not working at present.
I don't even know what I'm doing here other than to vent and voice my worries. I am scared to death and this isn't even the half of it.

agapetos -> RE: Mammograms (11/30/2008 7:57:02 PM)

I wonder if you can see your regular doctor about this ~ they may well be able to reassure you. Failing that, perhaps give the breast centre a call and ask to speak to a nurse on the phone to explain how scared you are. They may well be able to help ease your fears a little at this time.

And if venting and voicing your worries here helps, then keep doing so.

I've never heard of anyone having "fake" results from a mammogram.

It's not that this was a"fake" result, but my mother had a lump and two mammograms should absolutely nothing wrong. When they biopsied the lump, the found it was cancerous. (Her first doctor told her nothing was wrong with her and ended things there, she found a second doctor who even with the same result wanted to do further tests.)

This was a while ago though, I'm sure technology is much better now.

flowerz -> RE: Mammograms (12/1/2008 2:55:15 PM)

Allyamberly,

As you may have read in the above posts, I went through the same thing this past summer, and I think I have a good idea of how you feel. I want you to know that I have prayed for you. I had to wait a lot too, and then was told to wait another 6 months and do another ultrasound, so I'm still waiting.
