MyCatSmokey2006 -> JIMMY CARTER'S NEGOTIATING WITH TERRORISTS!!! (4/17/2008 10:52:01 PM)

Former President Jimmy Carter met another top Hamas official Thursday in a Cairo hotel and planned to meet more officials in Syria Friday, drawing the ire of dozens of U.S. lawmakers.

Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., told FOX News that "at best, President Carter is being naive" in trying to negotiate with avowed terrorists. "There is a long list of people who thought they could reason with dictators and killers, going back to Neville Chamberlain and Hitler in the 1930s, but it has been shown to be absolutely wrong."

Rep. Sue Myrick, R-N.C., told FOX News that she advocates revoking Carter's passport and supports a measure to withdraw all federal funding from his Georgia-based institution, the Carter Center.

I think that not only should his passport be revoked, but also his U.S. citizenship. If he were an ordinary citizen instead of a former president, he'd be tried for treason.

Last I checked, we were not in a state of war with Hamas. Try again.

I was trying to decide if I should comment or not. Hmmmmm.............

Not sure what to say.

Let's check our emotions at the door, please.
Revoke Carter's citizenship? Whatever.....

csl7037 -> RE: JIMMY CARTER'S NEGOTIATING WITH TERRORISTS!!! (4/18/2008 5:56:14 AM)

Aren't they in a state of war with us?

I do agree that "naive at best" is the only way to characterize this. Especially after the mess the word was during his Presidency, it's somewhat ironic. I'm not sure whether it's traiterous or just embarassing.

TheosCentric -> RE: JIMMY CARTER'S NEGOTIATING WITH TERRORISTS!!! (4/18/2008 5:58:37 AM)

Hamas has not declared war on the U.S., the last time I checked.

I think it said his passport and his funding (not his citizenship). I do think he needs to be told to cut it out, though. Maybe he needs a test of mental competency...I have a hard time believing a clear headed rational person would think this is prudent and responsible behavior, especially for a past President.

iluvatar -> RE: JIMMY CARTER'S NEGOTIATING WITH TERRORISTS!!! (4/18/2008 7:51:43 AM)

Maybe it is naive, but are our current policies working?

I didn't think so.

So she'd ignore all the good work they're doing, because she believes that he shouldn't be trying to mediate a particular conflict. [8|]

There is a law that covers these actions of Mr. Carter.
The Logan Act.
It's time to use it.

TheosCentric -> RE: JIMMY CARTER'S NEGOTIATING WITH TERRORISTS!!! (4/18/2008 8:05:50 AM)

nobody else is attempting to mediate the conflict.

Who do you think we're fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan? It's a mixture of different terrorist groups.

And even if you don't accept the above - Hamas is in conflict with Israel. And our running stance is that an attack on Israel is an attack on the U.S.

mapachito13 -> RE: JIMMY CARTER'S NEGOTIATING WITH TERRORISTS!!! (4/18/2008 8:16:07 AM)

Hamas' idea of negotiating is suicide bombing and Qassam rockets!

Carter has a good heart but he should start using his head. Of course, he never did when he was President, so why should he ruin his "perfect" track record.

TheosCentric -> RE: JIMMY CARTER'S NEGOTIATING WITH TERRORISTS!!! (4/18/2008 8:21:12 AM)

When was the last suicide bombing in Israel?

stamper_ben -> RE: JIMMY CARTER'S NEGOTIATING WITH TERRORISTS!!! (4/18/2008 8:44:39 AM)

When was the last Kassam?

RichLP -> RE: JIMMY CARTER'S NEGOTIATING WITH TERRORISTS!!! (4/18/2008 8:45:44 AM)

Is Jimmy Carter meeting Hamas as an official representative of the government of the United States of America?

Is Carter bringing promises that Carter CLAIMS the Bush (or Obama/Clinton/McCain) administration WILL follow if Hamas agrees?

revoke his citizenship, revoke his passport... morning comedy. It's FRIDAY! [:D]

TheosCentric -> RE: JIMMY CARTER'S NEGOTIATING WITH TERRORISTS!!! (4/18/2008 8:46:23 AM)

Was it Hamas who fired it?

Btw, nice dodge.

Is it Hamas who controls Gaza? Yes.

And as for dodges, the comment you asked a question on made specific mention of the rockets.

Nice try.

I am grateful for the introduction of the Logan Act to this thread, as I wasn't familiar with it.

But the Wiki article says there are no records of convictions using it.

*shrug*

Btw, I don't think that Carter is actually negotiating. He's only meeting with the leaders.

Therefore, the Logan Act would not apply.

I think we call this semantics!

Since when has a negotiation-as opposed to doing absolutely nothing- ever led to an unfavorable outcome for a country? And this isn't even a negotiation- Jimmy Carter doesn't even represent the US, so this isn't even giving Hamas any legitimacy.

Hitler would have taken over Europe faster if Chamberlain had done absolutely nothing. Chamberlain was likely able to hold off the war for a few months by at least informing Hitler that there would be war if he invaded Poland.

Jimmy you were a horrible POTUS, go back to what you do best, building Habitat houses. The way he handled the hostage situation with Iran should give his defenders a clue. [8|]

GroupW -> RE: JIMMY CARTER'S NEGOTIATING WITH TERRORISTS!!! (4/18/2008 9:49:08 AM)

Probably more than just semantics in the eyes of the court. Listening and learning are held to be distinct from negotiating and offering. Might be a bit of a fine line, but it's an important one. The listening and learning is something we American's have not been that good at lately.

Which was completely dwarfed by the peace agreement he negotiated between Israel and Egypt.
