This was an interesting time in music history, new bands were starting to make it big with a new synth/new wave/pop sound. Duran Duran, Men At Work, Culture Club Men Without Hats, were all making it big back then.

Michael Jackson, The Police, The Flashdance Soundtrack, Billy Joel, David Bowie were all the amongs making it big back then, and MTV was just starting to make it really big as well.

Who were your favorite groups, songs during that era of music?

Hmmm...in '83 I was listening to hard rock/metal primarily.
Albums I owned (and still own) from that time: Alcatrazz "No Parole from Rock and Roll", Dio "Holy Diver", Krokus "Headhunter", Queensryche "Queensryche" and the first Ratt album among others. Plus I was still listening to the first 2 Ozzy records, lots of VH, Rainbow, Def Leppard, whatever bands were formed from the remnants of Lynyrd Skynyrd (RCB and ACB) and Stevie Ray Vaughn. And ZZ Top's "Eliminator".
Michael Schenker's "Assault Attack" is in my top 10 list of must-have guitarcentric records.

I do confess having listened to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" more than once (it's a great disc, imho) and a little bit of Duran Duran but the latter is mostly from having to learn their songs for the cover band I was in at the time. And '83 was probably the first time that I heard a country song and went "Hey, that's not too bad". I thank George Straight for that.

I wasn't much into the 'new wave' movement happening in the early '80s. All that heavy synth-pop **** and pre-emo singing made me want to hurt small animals.
The ONLY band of that era/genre that I listened and still listen to were Split Enz.

The Police were always cool in my book ("Synchronicity" is a classic) and the Plimsouls' "A Million Miles Away" is probably one of my favorite songs of all time.

Well, I was not yet a Christian (not until 1986), 19 years old and a freshman at U of I at Chicago at the time.

I was a HUGE fan of the Doors...even believed Jim Morrison was alive and ready to make a comeback at any time!. [:D]

Other favorites included AC / DC, The Beatles, Black Sabbath, Dio, Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen, The Who...not really representative of the year 1983, I suppose, but that's what I was listening to at the time.

I wasn't really into much of the current music (almost like I am today!), though I heard plenty of it from my girlfriend (now my wife). She was into Duran Duran, and a fan of pop radio, whereas I preferred rock. We used to watch a show called Friday Night Videos together, so I'm pretty familiar with most of the pop tunes from that year.

Around this time I first started getting into the blues, during the college years. Mostly B.B. King and Muddy Waters back then. I guess I was always an old soul.

Hey, me too, July of 86 to be exact but I was 16.

I remember having a radio / cassette player with one speaker. Then I got a walkman. I was more into songs than artists back then. I would alternate between the pop and rock stations. In 1984 Mom got us the cable TV and I loved the MTV (I remember Duran Duran all the time, The Police, The Fixx, Little Steven, Bon Jovi, Frankie Goes to Hollywod, Elvis Costello, Culture Club ad nauseum, ZZ Top, Def Leppard, Tina Turner and her great legs) along with ESPN and being able to watch the WWF again.

In those times I liked Rush, Scorpions, Survivor, The Fixx, Gap Band, some Duran Duran, Saga (well the first two songs off "Worlds Apart" anyway), Loverboy, Donnie Iris ("I've Been Injured in the Game of Love" and "Ah Leah") Taxxi ("I'm Leavin'" and "So in Love With You"), Asia, Tom Petty ("Change of Heart" among many others), .38 Special and I'm sure more. I know there were pop artists I liked too but I can't think of many.

I remember watching the "Making the video for Thriller" documentary in school. I liked "Thriller" at the time. I don't know if I would say Michael Jackson is the "King of Pop" but its certainly possible.

Favorite CDs of mine released that year but I didn't get into until later were U2's "War" and Iron Maiden's "Piece of Mind".

If we could include 1981 and 1982 in my list of favorites would grow quite a bit.

BTW: Anyone picking up the collectors edition of ZZ Top's "Eliminator" when its released in June? I liked it fairly good and it'll be an excellent addition to my collection due to ZZ Top's stature in rock music and the importance of that release for 80s music.

I guess that we could create a seperate thread for '81/'82 music. It was such a transition time back then (as music always goes in cycles and continues to evolve.) Believe it or not, I did not think that music back in '83 was as good as music of '82 at the time, go figure. [8|]

Aldo Nova (self titled)*
Blue Oyster Cult: Fire of Unknown Origin (remaster this please!!!)
Def Leppard: High N Dry

1982:
Asia (self titled)
Scorpoins: Blackout
Pat Benatar: Get Nervous
Survivor: Eye of the Tiger ("The One That Really Matters" flat out rocks)

[* Copyright date on CD says 1981 but actual release year according to the liner notes was 1982]

I'm sure there are more. I'll edit if I think of any.

BTW: these are my favorites. If I didn't include a favorite of yours (yours referring to whoever is reading this), no offense. Simply wasn't a favorite of mine or I haven't thought of it yet.

Its relevant for 1983 because those releases were still very prominent and often played in 1983.

Another three for 83:
Yes: 90125
Night Ranger: Midnight Madness
The Police: Sychronicity.

Not necessarily favorites but enjoyable and very prominent in 1983. For some stations back then that might be half their playlist![:D] OK I exaggerated (a little [;)])

1983 was when I "discovered" New Wave music and the station that played it. I stopped listenning to it for a while before rediscovering it back in '84. Believe it or not the station is still around, although the music isn't.

Formats come and go but stations are forever! Probably easier to buy or change an existing one than to get FCC clearance for a new one.

No worries. There isn't a remastered version of .38 Special's "Special Forces" (I'll stick with my best of the A&M years collection) and I had second thoughts about rebuying Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger". So I think no purchases for me today.

Could be, just thinking, I am following a conservation on another board, which is also a topic of discussion in this folder too: analog vs. digital. I am starting to think that maybe record companies are now producing CD's because they can charge twice as much as albums even though they have flacked on quality, but I digress. That is a topic for the other thread instead. [sm=biggrin.gif]

I graduated in '82 and still think the period from '78-'82 had some great music. What I really remember about '83 is everybody listening to Oingo Boingo (sp?). I think '83 was the year that Rush put out "Signals", the last great album for them.

In '83 I was 11 y/o (sorry fellas) but I was just discovering metal, or at least Rock and Roll. Van Halen were my hero's, the 1984 album set me on the track to becoming a musician. Otherwise, Scorpions, Bon Jovi the "9800 degrees farenheit" album which I think personally speaking was their best. Where I was from you could not like Michael Jackson or the Eurythmics or any of those bands otherwise you would get you behind kicked. But later on I re-discovered those groups and listend quite a bit in the 90's. The Cure were big for me (tho in the 90's, I really liked "The Love Cats" and "Disentigration" although that was '87)... The Cars, We did not have MTV or even cable until 1988, and my parents forbid us from getting cable because of MTV.

I was only 13, not that much older. It took me another year or two to discover metal.

Very very close. "Signals" was in 1982, "Grace Under Pressure" was in 1983. I would actually say "Moving Pictures" (1981) was their last great album. "Power Windows" (1985) was fairly good. "Signals" had two killer songs to open things (Subdivisions, Analog Kid) but the rest was ho hum. "Grace Under Pressure" had a synth pop feel I actually liked. MTV must have worn out the video for "Distant Early Warning".

80's land of one hit wonders in pop. Mike you bringing back memories. remember the classics like 867-5309? Tommy Tutone.
how about Do You Want Me? Human League.
Flock of Seagulls, and so many others. the big thing was mtv was actually music television not the **** they have become today. wonder do they even know what videos are anymore. lol


how about the gem. the first ever music video. Video Killed the Radio Star.

I have some stuff a friend downloaded. is like the top 100 songs each year by billboard. I been listening to them lately. how about Gloria by Laura Branigan?

and of course the biggest crush I had as a teen was on Gloria Estefan. Miami Sound Machine ruled.

rap was decent then not all about murder and sexual assault and the mess it became. Fat Boys, Run-DMC, Sugarhill Gang.

and of course, hair metal was beginning. Motley Crue released first one I think was 83. Looks That Kill. could be 84 but I think was 83.

I do recall the Maneater girl, Sweet Dreams are made of these, and other big hits from 83 though

Some more good ones! On a side note, I was haunted by Motley Crue's use of the pentagram one night! [:o] My mom had to pray with me to get it out of my mind! I very much limited just what songs that I would listen to by the band by then.

I was an 80's kid, so everything and anything 80's is so me. I remember when MTV first came to town, and they played videos 24/7
As far as christian bands go, I was a big white heart, bryan duncan fan. Of course Michael W, Amy G, and Newsboys when they were a wee bit younger. Gosh, this is making me feel really old, thanks man.

I liked a lot of the music from the 80s. I graduated in '79. When my sister was growing up (class of '86), I referred to her kind of music as bubble gum music. W/ Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, & of course, the ever popular Moon Unit, it defined a special generation. Sometimes my sister still talks in Valley Girl talk. Now her 13-year old daughter has picked up on it.

I enjoyed Billy Joel, Barry White, Phil Collins, folks like that. kd

I've pretty much always listened to a variety of genres that span multiple decades, even centuries if you count classical. It all starts to blur a bit, so I'll have to scan my collection and surf the net a little and return.

I do seem to remember Crowded House and Devo videos on MTV. Would that be the correct year?

Hi Shema, not quite, Crowded House was more the later 80's, while Devo did have at least 1 or 2 songs on MTV back in 1983. I didn't get MTV until late October of that year, and more or less helped change my musical perspective.
