For senior, abortion a medium for art, political discourse

Art major Aliza Shvarts '08 wants to make a statement.

Beginning next Tuesday, Shvarts will be displaying her senior art project, a documentation of a nine-month process during which she artificially inseminated herself "as often as possible" while periodically taking abortifacient drugs to induce miscarriages. Her exhibition will feature video recordings of these forced miscarriages as well as preserved collections of the blood from the process.

The goal in creating the art exhibition, Shvarts said, was to spark conversation and debate on the relationship between art and the human body. But her project has already provoked more than just debate, inciting, for instance, outcry at a forum for fellow senior art majors held last week. And when told about Shvarts' project, students on both ends of the abortion debate have expressed shock — saying the project does everything from violate moral code to trivialize abortion.

This is just a whole new level of disgusting. I think we will see pro-life and pro-abortion people united against this.

While I shouldn't be surprised, I haven't found one reference from any of the big media sources on this exhibit. Clearly, people in the media are aware of it because at least a dozen smaller sources have picked up the story (including worldnetdaily). Where is CNN, ABC, NBC, or even FOX?

benelchi -> Yale student's abortion 'performance art' may be hoax (4/21/2008 10:10:22 AM)

Not that it makes the concept of this art project any more acceptable, but I did find this article on SFgate.com; however, living very near SF, I can tell you this paper does have a big reputation for misrepresenting facts with a very strong liberal bent, and so far this is the only site carrying this story. I guess it is kind of wait and see.

(04-19) 04:00 PDT Hartford, Conn. --

A Yale University art student's claim that she induced repeated abortions on herself and used the blood for her senior project is false, school officials said after her account was published in the student newspaper.

But in a guest column published in Friday's student newspaper, Shvarts insisted that the project was real. She described her "repeated self-induced miscarriages," although she allows that she never knew whether she was actually pregnant.

University officials said Shvarts' project included visual representations, a news release and other narrative materials. When confronted by three senior Yale officials, including two deans, Shvarts acknowledged that she was never pregnant and did not induce abortions, Klasky said. "She said if Yale puts out a statement saying she did not do this, she would say Yale was doing that to protect its reputation," Klasky said.

SailorPizza -> RE: Yale student's abortion 'performance art' may be hoax (4/22/2008 2:45:00 PM)

It was on Fox.. I heard about it on the radio I forget who I was listening to though, I had never heard her before.

And somehow I had it in my mind that Yale was an institute of "higher learning". Guess I was wrong.

davemiller7 -> RE: Abortion as Art? (4/22/2008 3:15:05 PM)

This is really sick. However the Bible reminds us of all sorts of horrible events and deviant behavior happening with the approach of the last days.

yustme -> RE: Abortion as Art? (4/22/2008 3:32:46 PM)

I think this is absolutely sick. However I do believe every man and woman should see a film on abortion and what it does to a baby.Maybe it would help to stop abortion,or should I say the murdering of helpless babies.

henny -> RE: Abortion as Art? (4/22/2008 6:41:17 PM)

There was already a thread on this.

The whole thing was a hoax.

There's links to other sites which carried the hoax story there.

MSNBC did a story on the hoax as well:

ljmac -> RE: Abortion as Art? (4/29/2008 1:16:38 AM)

Now she's saying it wasn't a hoax.

“I’m not going to absolve them by saying it was some sort of hoax when it wasn’t,” she told the newspaper. “I started out with the University on board with what I was doing, and because of the media frenzy they've been trying to dissociate with me. Ultimately I want to get back to a point where they renew their support because ultimately this was something they supported.”

Please note that the date on the article that you posted was 4/18/2008. Since then the University has said that the art will not be displayed until she states that it was a hoax and that there was no human blood involved. At present, I cannot find whether or not the exhibit was actually allowed to go on.
