If you haven't prepared your family already, the last chance to do it is NOW.

Pray for those who can't or didn't know they should have prepared.

Food Rationing Confronts Breadbasket of the World

BY JOSH GERSTEIN - Staff Reporter of the Sun

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Many parts of America, long considered the breadbasket of the world, are now confronting a once unthinkable phenomenon: food rationing. Major retailers in New York, in areas of New England, and on the West Coast are limiting purchases of flour, rice, and cooking oil as demand outstrips supply. There are also anecdotal reports that some consumers are hoarding grain stocks.

At a Costco Warehouse in Mountain View, Calif., yesterday, shoppers grew frustrated and occasionally uttered expletives as they searched in vain for the large sacks of rice they usually buy.

"Where's the rice?" an engineer from Palo Alto, Calif., Yajun Liu, said. "You should be able to buy something like rice. This is ridiculous."

It's a shame that people didn't think through the consequences of demanding food be used for gasoline. Looking on the bright side maybe this obesity epidemic was God preparing us to get through those tough times. That is what fat is supposed to be for and heaven knows I'm well prepared.

I've also been keeping stocked up too. I do that anyway for hurricane preparation. I may have to get a garden planted too.

That's what I was thinking too. There are some real crisis occurring in many parts of the world over rising food prices and food shortages. To think we're immune from it here in the U.S. would be naive thinking. I know I wouldn't be prepared, I don't have enough fat on my bones to get me through the lean times!

I really wasn't making light of the issue because to those poor people in those less fortunate countries it's a real life and death issue.

This country though has been so blessed for so long that they will have a struggle to handle the tough times. It could get interesting and can be a time of reawakening. We've grown fat in more than just our bodies.

I'm not concerned.

My father had to give up farming because the aunt who inherited a little under half of the land he was farming took it and turned it over to the government as part of a program to return farmland to its "natural state", she gets a yearly stipend for doing so.

Farmers all over the country have done the same thing. It would only take a couple of years to reacquire that farmland if the government stopped giving them subsidies for not growing anything and for returning farmland to its natural state.

I am concerned-though- about the long-term side effects of intensive farming. The main issue is that if we're not careful, farmers are going to start using unsustainable practices that cause problems with soil erosion, as they did before the 1930s.

This will reduce our childrens' and grandchildrens' ability to sustainably grow food.

This has nothing to do with unsustainable farming... leaving fields fallow is a normal practice and is not part of the subsidies and return-to-nature program.

Farmers know better now than to push the soil harder than it's capable of handling. New farm techniques to further protect the soil are being implemented every year... the latest big deal is "no till farming".

People do not jeopardize their livelihood if they can help it. Now we know better and we have sophisticated tests and techniques and we know when we're pushing the soil too hard.

What's with the "final warning" in the subject line? Personally, I'm not too surprised. The way the economy has been going down the drain, I figured it was just a matter of time before we experience another 'Great Depression'. But this one could be our last. Isn't something like this in the Bible concerning the end times? I'm not sure where... but I recall someone talking about the famine being part of the end times prophecy. It's kind of scary to think that America can be in such a bad state, that we would be categorized much like that of a third world Country.

It is my sincere hope that you are right.

But in the past, this hasn't proven to be the case. Ultimately, finance works out to produce these two simple laws:

1.) Given the choice between two options, people should maximize Net Present Value.
2.) Net Present Value= the sum of all future cash flows discounted to the present at an applicable interest rate.

In the past, NPV has suggested that farmers convert cropland into developments- and they've done that. They traded a series of permanent cash flows (their "livelihood") for one lump sum by selling to a developer.

We've also seen this with commercial fisheries in the Atlantic.

I'm not saying there's a way to increase yields significantly by bringing about greater erosion- but if there is, somebody (maybe not current farmers) will eventually employ it if it makes more money than just plain farming.

The economy cycles from good times to bad times and back again.

Gas is high, but it has risen and lowered before, about six years ago. I do not know, if this is cause for alarm. Will look into it.

I'm sorry, but I fail to see what all the hystaria is about. The problem, as discribed in the article, seems to be more of a business, and distribution problem than any actual shortage problem. Then, again, I may be missing someting.

I do not mean to sound heartless or out of touch. I have heard that many farms in the United States seem to be following the money and concentating on crops that presently attract the larger dollars-those crops used for ethanol and the like. That means that there may be shortages in other crops, However, I believe that, in the long run, there are enough sane people in this country who are able to keep level heads about the situation.

Not unless they actually try to cause soil erosion. Farmers are not the dumb clucks of yesterday ( if they ever really were)

Farmers have been overproducing for years, keeping the prices for food down. Its been next to impossible to organize farmers because of their independant natures so they would produce less so the price would go up.

For many years now the only way a dairy farmer could make more money was to milk more and more and more cows. It became a self fulfilling prophecy of financial doom.

The farmers in america can produce more at anytime. No question, no doubt. Thing is, I guess your just gonna have to...pay...for it.

Finally.

There won't be any cheese since the corn to feed the cows is being used to make gas for those ugly hybrids. We're doomed I tell ya!

Should it come to food shortages, this could be a time for the Church to shine. Imagine the Church sharing food with Muslims and those who oppose her.

No way - not here. If I am hungry, hand me a gun or ax - I'll kill that chicken, deer, or rabbit myself.

I've heard that squirrel is tasty.
