Land that was once used to grow food is increasingly being turned over to biofuels. This may help us to fight global warming - The fear of global warming and the fearmonger environmentalists behind these scare tactics made us turn our food supply into some polutant free fuel...when its not effieicent or NEEDED!!. That...is fear for ya. This corn thing? There are many kinds of corn and the corn you feed cows with and the corn you eat are two very different corns. They are not interchangeable. Not all farmers are benefitting from this. Dairy farmers have had their feed prices go up..along with their feul prices.

It doesn't sound like they are rationing food, just limiting large food purchases. If people start panicking and buying huge amounts of food and trying to hoard it, then there will be food shortages. I don't think there are food shortages at this point, though. I haven't had any trouble finding the groceries I need. We are putting out a large garden this year, and we have chickens for eggs, but that's not because we're afraid of food rationing. We have growing children that are eating more the older they get, and I want to keep my food budget the same. It's either make my food budget a bit bigger or grow some of it on our own. We can't grow everything we need, but we can make a dent in it.

We like you always have a large garden and now that we have water pumps to keep everything watered I am sure we could produce if we needed to enough food to feed several large families for a year. In rural areas most people have gardens for fun, it taste good and to save a little money.

No, humans cannot eat feed corn, but the cattle do, the same animals we drink the milk of and eat the steaks of, so when 30% of the total corn crop is going to fuel you better believe it WILL affect your eating habits through shortages or how much you pay.

Good grief...did you ever hear of a garden. Food is not the problem but it might be a little more expensive for a while. This ethanol experience has caused a squeeze but believe me this will abate in a very short period. All we have to do is turn off the $1.25 per gallon government subsidy and those plants converting corn into ethanol will shut down real fast. We cannot afford to use more energy to get a gallon of ethanol than what the ethanol will provide, and that doesn’t count the waste of water (7 gals per gal of ethanol) It’s just another really stupid knee jerk reaction by our government and Al Gore. He started this whole mess back in 1995 when he sponsored a bill in congress. We have proven ways to produce energy, i.e. coal, nuclear and wind, why invent something that won’t work? Bob

Bob Good question! The term "straining for a gnat and swallowing a camel" comes to mind. Bio-fuels are a joke and a scientific farce. The CO2 savings will NOT be realized. I hope we can derail this system before it's another entrenched mistake.

I just went to costco and the asian grocery store today. There is no limit or rationing of food items such as rice. The asian grocery store had shelves full of rice bags. I suppose this run on the rice and other food items is just confined to certain parts of the country.

No, humans cannot eat feed corn, Actually, I think we can. Ground into flour, etc. Sweet corn ("human" corn) was totally new to dh when he came from Africa. He think's it's too sweet, too soft, and rather strange. I am not the least bit worried, nor stocking up. Prices *have* risen. But I am not seeing a food shortage. If one happens, we will adjust. We should even be able to get deer and turkey occasionally. They are starting to overrun our neighborhood, and we are on the metro side of a suburb.

I remember when the fuel prices went up in the seventies. Milk prices went...down and the feul prices went up...it killed a lot of farmers but...milk was still produced and no shortages. In fact, there has been a severe milk glut for years.

Rev 13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: Rev 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Rev 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. The food shortages will get so bad that people will take the verichip to buy food. Just imagine that tommorrow, you wake up and the stock market has completely crashed, another Katrina hits a larger part of America, where food is grown, and the terrorists hit some more stuff. Or that the man that causes all to recieve the chip becomes president of US. 4 days with no H2O and you die, 30 days to starvation levels, me personally I probaly could go 60 days. There are millions of people in US, that will not know what to do, how to respond, never went thru crisis, never slept in the elements, never hunted, never knew an hungry day. Won't realize that their paper money won't buy anything. People that don't take that chip are gonna starve. That's a given. I'm not taking the chip, so I expect to. I'm asking God for the strength to make it thru the suffering.

In any actual food shortage, My family and I would be in a lot of trouble. I have tried, on occasion, to have a vegetable garden. What I've found is that I don't really know what I'm doing, so I think I go to a lot of unnecessary work and way too often have a poor yield. And I'm ashamed to admit it, but I'm a little afraid of farm animals, even cows to some degree, though I have more experience with cows than the zero experience my husband and children have. (My family had two cows until I was five or maybe six years old. Then my parents sold them. End of story.) We would need a tremendous amount of education and acclimation to be able to produce our own food. And I imagine there are a lot of Americans who would be in the same boat. From what I read, I don't think we are really anywhere near that boat. The limits on rice seemed to me to be to prevent a run, rather than due to an actual shortage. But this thread is definitely a sobering warning that we are not immune to food shortage. We've been so well-fed for so long that it's very easy to forget that. It could happen. If it does, I hope there would be some Christian brothers and sisters from the country willing and able to give us city folk a hand in all the new things we'd have to learn, and be patient with us when large animals we don't know what to expect out of make us a little nervous!
