freakofnature -> Don't forget to set your clocks back in the fall... for about 1000 years (4/21/2008 4:51:18 PM)

"Muslim scientists and clerics have called for the adoption of Mecca time to replace GMT, arguing that the Saudi city is the true centre of the Earth.

Mecca is the direction all Muslims face when they perform their daily prayers.

The call was issued at a conference held in the Gulf state of Qatar under the title: Mecca, the Centre of the Earth, Theory and Practice.

One geologist argued that unlike other longitudes, Mecca’s was in perfect alignment to magnetic north.

He said the English had imposed GMT on the rest of the world by force when Britain was a big colonial power, and it was about time that changed…"

Talk about setting your clocks back in the fall... this should set them back about 1000 years or so.

(sorry forgot the link)

That's silly. The center of the earth is the airport at Atlanta, GA.

Uhhh... there would be TWO longitudes in line with the magnetic poles - the other one would be directly opposite.

And... don't the magnetic poles migrate a bit? If so, then Mecca wouldn't always be in line with the magnetic poles.

But what use is science when you worship a meteorite?

Well, technically the magnetic north pole is a 114 degrees longitude and Mecca is at 40 degrees longitude. So, Mecca is actually on the OPPOSITE longitude than the magnetic north pole.

Help me out here - what major cities would be at 114 degrees longitude?
