What is considered a customary tip for a hair cut?

I guess it depends on where you live. I grew up and have lived in the deep South most of my life and I had never seen or heard about anyone giving a tip for a haircut. The first time I ever came across the idea was in a thread on the forum.

I still don't tip for haircuts and I still don't know anyone that does around here.

Wouldn't that depend on the cost of the haircut?

I mean, when I tip waiters/waitresses, I base it around the price of the meal and also on the service. I wouldn't generally tip only $2 on a $50 meal or a whopping $2 on a $1.50 meal.

I too grew up in the deep south, and still live here. Mom always tipped, thus I do. I've seen that many/most customers do, so it's not a regional thing. I usually tip $2.

Do the same thing at the car wash. When the detail guys finish, I give them $2. Believe me, they remember who tips and will do your car up right. [;)]

I have a fabulous stylist who I have been seeing since I was a wee child ... this guy has watched me grow, get married, and is now doing the hair of my children as well. I tip him quite generously, as he goes above and beyond ... and isn't afraid to tell me that he WON'T do something to my hair I think would be neat (in other words, if I see a style in a magazine I'd like to try, he'll either encourage me if it works with me hair type, or will tell me NO -- go somewhere else for that 'butcher job' if it won't work with my hair)

And if I have a hair appointment on a day where cash is tight, I still tip -- but not with cash ... I do up a batch of chocolate, or do some baking before I go, and take that along as a thank you.

I am talking about standard haircut price around $ 20-25. For this I would give $ 2 bucks which I find reasonable.

I am talking about standard haircut price around $ 20-25. For this I would give $ 2 bucks which I find reasonable.

Down here in in the Deep South in southeast Alabama, the most I've ever paid for a haircut has been $15 and that only in the past couple of years.

BTW, I'm talking Barber, not stylist.

I just go along for the ride when Mrs. K gets her hair cut and colored. Our barber cuts my hair while she is under the dryer. I usually leave a seven to ten dollar tip.

The barber and the stylist have the same license here. The difference is that a stylist shampoos your hair, even if you've washed your own head that morning.

I have used the same person for a long time and I am happy with her work so I tip 20%.

I get a cut, shampoo with head massage, hot steam towel on the face, and a back massage for $15... with the tip. [;)]

I went to cosmetology school and if it weren't for tips, most of the students wouldn't have been able to afford to get the gas/bus fare to get back and forth to the school.

I always tip 15-20%, unless the service is lousy, the stylist/barber is a gossip or uses foul language.

As everyone knows, men don't gossip but the barber shop was the place to get the latest local news that didn't make the newspaper when I was growing up. It was better than around the cracker barrel in my grandpappy's day.

Even today, the barber shop is about the last place the men folk can get together for an hour or two and just hangout with the guys. We need that.

Although, the occasional woman comes in after learning how much cheaper a trim is at a barber than at the salon.

Hmmmmm. My stylist owns her shop and everything I pay her goes directly to her. Should I still tip her? I know my hubby gets his hair cut at a shop where the stylist is an employee and he definitely tips a buck or two. Just curious, cause I have never tipped her -- maybe I should?

It used to be that it was considered an insult to tip the owner of the shop (for ladies--not sure about barbers), but that has apparently changed. My mother went to a woman who owned the shop, and she got real huffy when Mother didn't tip her.

I would ask--some still prefer not to be tipped when they own the shop, some don't mind, and some expect it.

As for the amount--I would say 20% is standard.

I think you need to find a new barber. $25 gets you a stylist in Manhattan (at least if you're a guy). This makes for some interesting conversations for a first-timer at a nice salon:

-"Oh my goodness! Did you have your hair machine-cut last time?"
"Are you asking me if my last barber used the clippers on the sides?"
"Yeah."
"I never do that. We always cut the sides manually."

-"I usually don't have a part. It's ok."
"We need to fix that."
<10 minutes later>
"Huh. I guess you're right. I do look better with a part."

If you're not getting that kind of service, you need to find a better barber/stylist.

I would also say that in some circumstances, spending an extra $10 every six weeks on a haircut is worth every penny. A nice haircut makes you feel better about yourself, and can even make you look a few years younger if you have a nice stylist.

My longtime friend is my hairdresser. She had never had the nerve to tell me that she needed to raise her price. ROFL So I just give her a raise on my own when I begin to hear what others pay for the same stuff. (for me that's $65.00 every 4 weeks) I don't "tip her" per say.

$20-$25 for a haircut & shampoo from a stylist? [sm=icon_smile_faint.gif] Good think the AED was close by. The last time I had a shampoo and haircut it was $45. That was a year ago. I need a trim to get rid of the bad ends (I've been letting my hair grow) and cringe to think it's probably $50+ plus now.

We do have expensive and very expensive beauty salons around here. In fact, the area where I live, the cheapest haircut is around ($ 40 - 50 only haircut no shampoo or blow dry), and it can go up to $ (100 haircut, shampoo & Hi Light); but in my case, lately, I found a good and kind young girl who did my hair last Xmas and I was quite satisfied with her work for only $ 20. So, why cut for $ 40 or 50 when I can afford to cut it good for less.

This hairstylist I found last Xmas was like an answer to a prayer. I honestly believe that spending too much $$ on just haircuts is foolish. I'd rather use this money to finance Christian ministries than just to have expensive salon have my hair done for $ 50- 100 and sometimes I end up not liking the cut. So the end result is loss of money and less than excellent haircut.

I always tip 15%. The more happy I am with my stylist, the more gladly and generously I give and I never forget to take her card so that I can always remember that she was good and can call her to have my next hair cut.

It depends on the amount they charge in the first place for me. I won't tip for already over-inflated prices.

I don't tip my stylist. He already charges me $36 for about 30 minutes for a cut and semi-style. That's good enough wages in my opinion. It's not the usual thing around here to tip for hair cuts. Those in the salons I've gone to charge way more than enough to cover that. If they want $2 more, then they can add it into the cost of the cut.

I did tip my daughter's stylist. She only charges $15 which is way below the rest, so I feel adding a bit to her cut is worth it.

I used to tip $5 on an 12 haircut because the guy was very good and the price was too low. Now he raised to 15 and the tip went down accordingly.

But this is little Havana, Miami, Cuba so things change.

My sister in law is a major store owner - stylist in the midwest, she charges bucks AND expects a tip and a Christmas present... supply and demand

I always tip 20-25%. This is a tipping industry, no matter what the cut costs. My hair is extremely difficult to cut so I don't mind paying $45 (plus tip) if I know that I'm going to have a good haircut. It's also my sole luxury-- I don't buy a lot of clothes, I color my own hair, and otherwise live frugally.

However, having managable hair is worth it. If you can't afford to tip appropriately for a $45 cut, then find a price range of a cut where you can tip appropriately.
