On Monday, I am going to start working as a software engineer. I do not have work experience in that field. I graduated with a B.S. in Computer Science last December and this will be my first job that is related to what I studied in school. Do you have any advice for me since I am brand new to this field?

Be really attentive and try to learn as much as you can. Be prepared for the learning curve - and to shell out some money for books (unless your job provides them). (bookpool.com is a good place for discount technical books). Watch the dynamics of the group. Don't disdain maintenance code - you can learn a lot from looking at how others code. Try to get a feel for what the other engineers do and read. If they read slashdot for example - then peruse it so that you aren't out of the loop and you have something to talk about.

engineer for what kind of software?

accounting? graphics? artificial intelligence? nasa?

My husband "makes" video games so I always want to know what kind of software engineer you are meaning. He is classified as an Artificial Intelligence Programmer for his video game producing company.

I work for an auto auctions company, which obtains wrecked cars and other vehicles from trade-ins and auctions them off to other companies. I write the web services software for my company. The software that I write allows computers from my company to provide services for other computers at other companies. Those services have to do with updating databases and processing the buying of vehicles.

One bit of advice from me...

Dont fit yourself into a small box. What does that mean???

I am a printer, and have been hanging around shops since I was 6, I am 49 now. I have learned to do many different things well.

My current employer (been here for 11 years) is struggling, and has had 4 rounds of layoffs. I am the last one to do what I do. Those who can do the most for the company will be the ones to last through the tough times.

Be indespensible, but always learn.
