I am curious...how many of you have extra food stores in case of national emergencies where the distribution of food may be hindered?
With escalating food prices, gas prices, falling home values, higher unemployment, gigantic consumer debt, and little fear of God in this nation...
...I found myself the other day buying two large bags of rice and two very large bags of flour. Someone in the store commented that it was going to be a big cake :)
Is it panic time? Time to batten the hatches?
I guess I am sensing some urgency to protect my family's [dietary] well-being.
How about you -- do you have a larger-than-usual pantry? And why?

Your panic is probably media driven. No way would I buy 2 large bags of rice. Sometimes weeks pass by when I don't eat any. I suppose if rice were regarded as some sort of currency like gold coins, I would consider it.

I only shop for myself so I am not stocking up too much. Some people are panicking. Some of the costco members are buying the rice for their restaurants.

I don't stock up, either. With just the two of us, a large bag of rice/beans (whatever) would expire before we could eat it, anyhow. I certainly wouldn't buy two of them.

Since I am single, I only buy for one person. I don't see any need for panic and purchasing in big bulks.
I know what you're talking about, the revolution thing of 2000 millennium. I've seen many books, even Christian books written about them.
I believe there would a time in our life, tho I don't know when, when prayer would replace $$$. At least this is what these books said.

No, I'm not.
I would take the money I'd spend on extra food, and buy food for people who actually NEED it before I'd ever hoard for myself.
Instead of stockpiling, I'd take a good look at what I could do to help the situation, and the people who don't have the option of buying ANY food.

I am buying extra but not for the food price increase or possible shortages. I live on the gulf coast and it's just basic hurricane prep that I do every year. Most years it isn't necessary but when it was necessary it was nice to have what I needed on hand. I periodically buy extra to donate to the local food bank so that they are better able to help those in need. I don't think it's a bad thing to buy extra staples if you have a family to plan for and have to keep a tight budget.

I sometimes buy extra food and give it to the foodbank, but i don't stockpile it for us.
If there's a big snowstorm coming or something, i make sure we have lots of food that we can make if the power is off, that kind of thing.

Not stock piling here either. I did throw a couple extra jars of spagetti sauce and a couple extra boxes of pasta in my cart the other day- but only because they were on sale! I'm feeding a family of six. I try not to get overwhelmed by all the media hype over things. There may well be shortages of certain items - BUT that's when you try alternatives, plant a garden, or simply DO without. Maybe not having a diet not so high in carbs will be beneficial to many folks. If I bought two large bags of flour (I'm talking the big 10 -15 pound bags) it would get buggy before we could use it. One ten pound bag would last us a few months, unless I go on a baking frenzy.

We're not buying extra food. I haven't seen anyone doing this, or heard of anyone doing this around here.
I shop each week and I buy enough for that week, and stock up on things I usually use when it's on sale. It's what works best for our finances right now. But there are certain things that we eat a lot of that we always have enough of - a big bag of rice, pasta, frozen vegetables.
The media is claiming that this is related but I don't know if it truly is - the food banks don't have as much food to give as they usually do, so I'm going to try putting more in the food bank.

Nope! The Lord has always provided for me...I don't think He's going to stop because the U.S. economy is bad! After all, my Master owns everything!

Some things I always buy in bulk (flour and other baking things, cereal, rice, potatoes, canned goods like tomatoes, butter, etc) but more because I want to decrease my trips to town (and gas usage) than because I'm worried about the food supply.
I'm not stockpiling and I certainly wouldn't buy rice right now because of the prices. I'd take the time to shift to local foods I can depend on (where I live that's potatoes, onions, veggies, local meat) rather than worrying about the food that comes from far away.
I hope that this scare makes people seek out local sources of food.

I've never bought more than we could eat in one week. I also buy food for several families right now who are in tougher times than we are.
I wouldn't have the room to stockpile anyways.
although...I hear that rice is being rationed at Costco - you can only buy four 20 lb. bags at one time. 
yeh, it's terrible
