It's a wholesaler and it's usually just as cheap if not cheaper to use Sam's or Costco than it is to use the food distributor, especially for the independent mom and pop restaurants.

Nope.
1. I think the "panic" is media driven. I have definately seen prices rise in the last few months, and it upsets me, but we are not running out of food. I have even heard someone talking about stores "rationing" food and I think that is bogus. Occasionally stores will limit what you can buy, either because they belatedly realize they should have ordered more, or because they are selling it for a real good price and don't want greedy horders snapping up their entire stock in the first 5 hours of the sale.  For instance, a local store occasionally sells bags of flour for .99c. That is an *awesome* deal, and they limit it to two per transaction to make sure everybody gets a chance to buy some.
2. I don't have storage space or a freezer even if I wanted to stock up.
I am buying lentils and rice in bulk because it's just easier, so if the world falls apart next week, we'll be good for a week or so until we can figure out what to do next. Lucky me, dh knows how to grow food, so we won't starve if the worst should happen.

I remember stocking up on food for Y2K, which of course, turned out to be nothing. I don't think we would have done too well on what I had stocked up, anyway, though. It didn't take us that long to run out of of some of the items, and some of the other items we had went bad before we could use it all up.
I don't think it's a bad idea to have some extras on hand for short-term things, such as power outages. Since we have an electric well pump, it's good to have some bottled water to drink if the power goes out. It's also to have a little extra food in the winter in case we get snowed in and can't make it to the store.
In the past we've gardened and put up food for the winter, and although we haven't been able to in the last couple of years, we're looking forward to doing that again this year.

I did go stock up on rice. I'd say we have three months worth if we eat it two nights a week. I just heard that the price of rice was going to go up, so I'm hoping maybe it will go down by the time we run out. I wasn't afraid of running out food, just didn't want to have to pay an arm and a leg next month buying rice.

Jumping in a little late, but yes I have been buying extra to stockpile. This is not out of fear of some major catastrophe though, its for the simple reason of saving money. If an item goes on sale really cheap even if we don't need it at the moment, but will in the future I stock up on it. I am doing the grocery game at the moment and that is what she recommends, but no I don't do it for the reason mention in the OP.

I stock up, although it's not out of fear. We actually live in a very good area for being self sufficient, and even if the world as we know it ended and every grocery store within 3 states blew up, we would not starve. God has put plenty of food out in our neck of the woods.
I stock up because I hate to go grocery shopping, and the fewer times I have to do that unpleasant chore, the better. 
However, I do think it's important to be prepared. There are many verses in the bible that admonish us to plan ahead. The woods near me is full of food, but if you don't know what to eat, you could starve in the midst of that abundance. I personally am more comfortable if I and my family members know how to forage for edibles, grow a garden, and raise animals for milk and meat.
I do sometimes worry about the "city folks" who have never seen a tomato plant and who think all meat originates in styrofoam and plastic wrap. If they're comfortable with that, it's fine with me. I just don't want them knocking on my door if the grocery stores are suddenly empty.

I dont buy extra but in the summer I stock up by canning everything I can--last year I canned 5oo quarts---sure saves on the grocery budget!!

After reading the posts here I am amazed at the faith in the future regarding food supplies.
Myself I like to feel safe rather than sorry so yes we are stocking up. After living thru hurricane Rita and lack of food and water was a real hardship; reading the news about missing honeybees going to effect our crops and other predictions we are preparing just like before Y2K with freezer dried food, extra canned goods, and water purification tabs. After doing all we can it is easier to not worry at each new onslaught of bad economic news.

But did anything happen with the Y2K scare? No. I went to the grocery store on January 2nd or 3rd and had NO trouble whatsoever getting what I needed.
If by chance there are items I can't purchase because they are sold out - then I find a subsititute or we go without.
I don't have faith in the future regarding food supplies BUT I DO have great faith in a God that has promised to take care of his people. Does that mean things will always be easy? absolutely not. But he's not going to let his children starve. And quite honestly it would do many americans good to learn to make do with less. Now if there were a possibility of natural disaster such as a hurricane in my area - then certainly I would have a stock of supplies out of necessity. I do sometimes do that when we are expecting a nasty snowstorm. The way it is I could likely make do for a few weeks with what we will have on hand after I do some grocery shopping later this week - except for pershiables like bread, milk, and eggs.

I don't think it's panic time just yet. However we do keep extra items instock in our food pantry at all times. i hate to run out of anything. We have built up a good supply of what we use on a regular basis. We kind of set a reorder point on all our grocery items. We never go lower thant three cans of anything. Although we are having a crisis with our favorite brand of Pizza Sauce. Our local store has been out of it the past few times we have gone shopping.
When you have a family of five you don't have to worry about rotating your stock in your food pantry. Most things move pretty fast. We also do stock up on specials as well. So to answer the question, we always have a little extra on hand, but no, we are not hording everything we can and stocking up for a major disaster.
Look to the Lord for guidence on this. He always provides for us, and gives us the wisdom to hunt down the specials and bargans according to what we need and use.

Rita was a real witch. They were rationing gas and food was hard to get because of storm damage. It's not a bad thing to be prepared, especially if you live in an area that could face a real natural disaster on top of a possible shortage due to short sightedness of our wonderful elected officials.
