Hello my beautiful single friends

You really want to go and see a film, a psychological thriller. But it contains stuff that might cause your mind to wander to ungodly places. It's not the film itself that's the problem but little bits of it. The odd scene here & there. Would you go?

If I felt certain that the bits and pieces would lead my mind into sinful thoughts, then the answer would be, "absolutely not". I have enough trouble with my thoughts and actions already without deliberately putting myself in a compromising situation.

I strive to protect my mind.

I stopped reading a book last night just a few pages into it for that very reason.

...and force yourself to settle for a lesser film? Less exciting, less satisfying... just less?

I'm not a huge film fan, just a moderate. That's why I can't just see anything.

However, I will also say that there's a "blurred line" for this and such line isn't at the same level for everyone.

I'm not talking about movies specifically whose very essence is based around an aspect that is immoral; those I absolutely refuse to see.

I'm talking about movies that have short scenes in them that aren't the reason for the movie, but is just a brief aspect of the movie. (Frankly sometimes I think some "aspects" are thrown in for no valid reason . . . those movies I won't see neither). But if there's a scene that didn't come from the middle of nowhere and isn't blatantly immoral, then, based on a few factors (the conviction of Our Lord's Holy Spirit primarily), I will either (a) watch the scene, (b) fast forward through it or (c) go into the kitchen to get something to drink or go put a load of clothes in the washer or dryer (although b and c are not a possibilities at a theatre).

I don't see it as "forcing myself to settle for less."

I do, however, see watching a movie I have no business watching because of the ensuing thoughts as settling for less.


We feed our spirit through our mind and we feed our mind through our senses.
For me, why would I want to risk damaging my spirit? It's not a fun place to come back out of.
It's also very spiritually dangerous to flirt with something like that.

In the end, it's just not worth it to me; my purity of mind is more important to me than what a couple of hours of watching a movie could provide for me.

Ruby...Everyone has there own measuring stick of what they can or can't see before it becomes a sin to them. If you are asking us about it. You must be pretty close to that point for you KWIM?

I am very careful about what I allow myself to watch. I carefully research any movie I (or my children)go to see, because I don't want to have to walk out on a movie I just paid for. (I know someone who will ask for her money back, and get it, but I am nonconfrontational) If there is one scene that I find slightly inappropriate, but not offensive, I may still go and cover my eyes or turn away, If there is more than one, but I still think that the movie may have redeeming qualities, I will wait and rent it so that I can fast forward over the offensive material.
There is one area that I am pretty flexible, and that is if it is Historically accurate and removing the "difficult part" would be like trying to pretend that it never happened, or essentially rewriting history. I will usually see a movie like this with no problem.

There is an organization that edits the bad stuff out of movies (most of which has nothing whatsoever to do with the plot) and reissues them. Wish I could remember the name of it. Get some of their stuff.

Some movies has a way of speaking truth in such a powerful way that I can put up with some unnecessary junk. So, if I know what the theme of the movie is and wondering how they are going to bring this point across, I can ignore some of the bad stuff that's not really important so that I can get the good stuff. Let's say, the movie has a sex scene that lasted a few seconds. Would I avoid seeing it because of that. I guess, if I'm struggling with sexual addition of some sort, then, it will be good for me to avoid it. But if I'm not, then, I can choose to see that part, or leave the theatre for a few seconds.

With all the violence in the movie No Country for Old men, I can honestly say that I love the way that movie was done.

For me, I guess it would depend on the movie. I don't watch much of anything ever so if I thought it was going to be good enough to watch in the first place, I'd overlook anything inappropriate so long as the movie wasn't chock-full of stuff I'd just as soon not see/hear. If it's full of that, it's probably not full of anything of interest to me.

I'd probably watch the film when it came out on DVD, when I could forward through or otherwise skip the questionable parts. You can't really do that in a movie theatre. With some films it is so interlaced with the story, it is unwatchable and I opt to skip it.

I guess it would depend on the movie. I am a movie freak and there are very few that I don't like. I will watch anything at least once unless it just doesn't interest me. I haven't watched anything that would encourage me to sin, (at least that I know of) so I'm not quite sure how to answer that part of the question. If you feel anything could cause you to sin it's best to stay away from it regardless of what form it takes.

Yeah, I do self censor. I will close my eyes, or if its a little to risque or gruesome, I won't go see it.
